Training For Security In Today’s Computer World

Posted on July 31st, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Security training and certification will not only help keep students safe online, but gives them just one more certification to add to their resume to make them more marketable to potential employers. These certifications and the security knowledge that comes with them are quickly becoming something that anyone who uses computers on a day to day basis cannot afford to be without. Having a basic working knowledge of security is the first step in keeping your computer, your identity, your personal information, and even your family safe online.

Security is a word that is catching up with people who rely on computer systems to keep operations and businesses running. Today, the average worker signs an acceptable use policy which is part of a large computer security policy, and they are responsible for any misuse and damage caused on computer resources. Some companies offer training to raise awareness of the employees in regards to computer security, but some other companies prefer to hire workers who have already acquired security related credentials. There is definitely a need for workers who know the basics of security already. These types of employees bring a great value to a company with less downtime and fewer security lapses.

Average employees need a basic core knowledge of security to distinguish between the legitimate and malevolent practices. They will then be armed with knowledge which can complement a system administrator’s security safeguards. Parents, teachers, and students can also use these techniques to guard their home computers, their families, and their intellectual properties. Those who bank online, pay utility bills online, shop online, and have children chatting online can all use these security resources to help protect them. The training will help students protect themselves against identity theft, credit card fraud, online phishing scams, viruses, and backdoors, as well as email hoaxes, sexual predators, and loss of confidential information.

There are of course more specific courses available for employees, like these available at www.unitek.com/training/security/securityportal.php http://www.unitek.com/training/security/securityportal.php . There are specific courses for Microsoft security training, Integrated E-Business Solutions, Citrix security courses, and Cisco security training. Unitek is, in fact the only company in the United States to achieve dual status as a Microsoft Gold Partner for Learning and Integrated E-Business Solutions and Cisco Learning Partner.

In addition to offering free mini bootcamps, there are courses available in the systems mentioned above, and Vendor Neutral Security Training, NETAPP, Linux, CompTIA, JAVA, Open Standards, and Sun Solaris.

Enhanced Houston Dating

Posted on July 31st, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

There are a number of ways to enhance your Houston dating experience, and chief among these is to fight your urge to resort to the “dinner and a movie” standby date. Many of us fall into this trap because its simple, relatively affordable, and, best of all, it requires little to no forethought.

But anyone, anywhere, can do that. Singles in Houston have a wide range of entertainment, culture, and other venues to enjoy, so why waste your Houston dating life bogged down in the mundane?

So the first step in enhancing your Houston dating is getting to know your city. Find out when the sporting events are happening, where the historical locations are, or what other local attractions might provide an entertaining evening. There’s always something new and unique to experience in Houston.

The next step is the more important one. Finding the right person to share in your Houston dating excursion. With the right person - someone who shares your goals, interests, and level of commitment - the most simple of activities can become memorable and meaningful experiences.

So how do you find that person? There are a number of ways, but lately online dating services have become a major source for finding your “soul mate” or “someone special”. In the early days, online dating was derided as the last resort for the “socially incapable”. But since technology has increased and the concept has gone mainstream, online dating has surpassed many of the traditional venues for singles to meet.

Some sites even offer you a way to get to know your potential matches before you even meet. The infamous personality test. If they’re done right, this can be a powerful way to enhance your Houston dating life. What does that mean? It means that a computer can’t tell you who to be attracted to, or who to fall in love with. It can, however, give you a perspective on whether or not it would be a good idea. Taking advantage of tools like these can help make your Houston dating more fun, romantic, and memorable.

Consider: how much time have you spent with people that turned out to be a poor match? How many times did it take you more than four or five dates to learn that you weren’t as compatible as you originally though? These online personality profiles can help you avoid these mistakes and enhance your dating experience by helping you find the right people.

Just remember: this won’t work when the online dating services doesn’t give you the freedom to choose. Sites that send matches with the promise like: “This person is good for you. Trust me.” are a lot like overbearing parents who want to make sure you date the kind of person they like, which might be completely outside of your own preferences.

Once you’ve found the right people, and the best activities, you’re ready to get on and experience Houston and all that it has to offer. Houston singles have an incredible array of possibilities to choose from, and with a little bit of forethought, planning, and research, you’re time spent with other singles can be made into something special.

I AM STILL - a CD from D.C. Anderson is a lesson in performing

Posted on July 31st, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

“Spin it a couple of times before forming an opinion. It’ll grow on ya.” - D.C. Anderson

D.C. Anderson is a New York City based actor, singer/songwriter and photographer. As an actor he has appeared on Broadway in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom Of The Opera,’ on National Tour in ‘Pippin’ (as Pippin), ‘The Life And Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby,’ and ‘Martin Guerre,’ regionally at the Guthrie and Steppenwolf Theaters and in episodic TV and movies made for television. As a cabaret performer he has made 6 appearances in the Mabel Mercer Foundation’s Cabaret Convention at Town Hall in NYC as well as gigged at Don’t Tell Mama, Triad, 88’s, Toulouse, Davenport’s, Downstairs Cabaret Theater, the Plush Room, the Cinegrill and Gardenia cabaret rooms. ‘Cabaret Noel: A Broadway Cares Christmas,’ the 2 CD holiday benefit recording, was initiated and co-produced by D.C. in 1993. In 1995, along with Karen Benjamin and Margaret Irwin, he produced the first in what has become an annual nationwide benefit event - ‘A Holiday Cabaret.’ His solo recordings include the CD’s ‘Time Was’ (1993), ‘The Box Under The Bed’ (1997), ‘Blue Summer Day’ (2000), ‘All Is Calm, All Is Bright’ (2001), ‘Collected’ (2002) and ‘Ballad’ (2004). D.C. is also a Bistro award-winning songwriter. A revue of his songs ‘Not For The Squeamish’ has been performed in New York City and Minneapolis. His songbook ‘Songs By D.C. And…Volume 1′ is available through LMLMusic.com. PBS stations nationwide have broadcast his 1997 concert as a part of the Brownville Concert Series. www.dcanderson.net

D.C. Anderson is a friend of mine. We’ve worked in the theatre together a few times. In the nineties, we performed together in a production of ‘Man Of La Mancha.’ Around that same time, I directed him in a production of ‘You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow.’ During that same season, I directed him in a production of ‘Dames At Sea.’ D.C.’s sister, Claudia and I worked together on a tiny little holiday production of ‘Amahl And The Night Visitors.’ Back then, D.C. gave me his first CD, ‘Time Was,’ and it played over and over at my house (still does). I have always thought that D.C. Anderson has a perfect voice (in the same way that I’ve always thought that Barbara Cook has a perfect voice). He has an ideal vocal production that I’ve always strived for in my work as a voice coach. The sound is musical, effortless and alive. There’s nothing forced about what D.C. does. His singing voice is his speaking voice made melodic. Since D.C. is a strong actor, there’s a real presence in his songs - he’s there in-the-moment in each song. Each song is a mini-play, or really, in these recordings, more like a small independent film. As a voice coach, I frequently use recordings by many famous singers, to have voice students hear this ability to fully become the song. D.C. Anderson’s recordings are a master’s lessons in performing this way.

“Theatre people” will enjoy this CD, while this CD is not really “theatrical” (in that it is not a bunch of show tunes). This CD is a collection of songs that are gentle, humorous, sad, witty, grieving, tender and touching. It’s a sort of song cycle of modern art songs - songs that are in a sort of folk style. I write that with trepidation, as it implies a sort of “stuffy” or “old fashioned” sensibility, and this CD is not “stuffy” or “old fashioned” even while it is in the best possible way, “old school.” This CD is like a well-made independent film. Not catering to the mass-market style of popular music today, “i am still” is true to itself, true to D.C. Anderson as an artist.

I was lucky enough to receive this CD in the mail a month ago and have been living with the CD ever since. Now I think it is time that I tell others they should add this CD to their musical libraries. My students of voice coaching should pay close attention. There’s a self-deprecating sense of humor in some of the songs and definitely in the note that accompanied the CD:

“You’ll either head right over to your computer to order additional copies for friends, relatives and co-workers from LMLMusic.com or iTunes or you’ll turn to your cat and say, ‘yet another CD from D.C. - isn’t that nice’ and put it under his bowl to protect the linoleum.”

D.C. has a cottage industry with his recordings at www.dcanderson.net (not unlike my own little cottage industry of voice coaching in San Francisco). D.C. plans to conquer the world of recorded sound, friend by friend - and I plan to help him make that a reality.

Now, for some of my favorite songs on the collection (they’re all wonderful, these are just my favorites today as I write this). First there’s ‘I Am Still,’ which is such a beautiful poem, a short film of a piece. I should mention here that the music is by Steven Landau and it is quite good. Steven, another old friend, was Musical Director of the First National Tour of ‘Titanic,’ and Musical Director and Arranger for the critically acclaimed Deaf West Theater production of ‘Big River,’ which played at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, on Broadway at the American Airlines theater, and on international tour. Years ago, I was part of a singing duo, Corber and Quick, with Judy Corber, who is now the brilliantly talented up-and-coming jazz-singer-to-know, Judith Wexler (www.judywexler.com). Steven Landau was our orchestra at the keyboard. He was a great arranger for us, and a great man. I’m so happy that he’s writing these great songs with D.C. They’re great pairing, along with the other composers on this collection.

This is how intimate the CD is - one of the funniest bits is the false start to ‘Have Fun,’ it takes us right into the recording session with D.C. The song is pretty damned funny as well, and Elizabeth Doyle’s music gives it a very enjoyable Maltby/Shire feel. D.C. is so great at putting hilarity, joy and fun right into his voice. ‘Sad Man’ - an achingly tender song with music by Ron Zimmerman with lyrics so simple and moving. The music has an almost retro sixties feel, while it sometimes reminds me of Sondheim, sometimes of Bacharach and David, it always perfectly suits the lyrics. The man in this song is so fragile, so vulnerable. This is simply an elegant song, sung by a master musician. The intensely intimate guitar work at the top of ‘Hard This Goodbye’ sets up the lonely lyricism that follows. The piano joins D.C. and the guitar for an effective trio. There’s a driving force to this ballad… driven to the hard goodbye of the title. There are few rare gems like ‘The Visit’ in this world, and I am grateful to D.C. and Steven for putting this one in such a perfect setting. Oh, I could write something about each song. Let me just add that ‘Dear Mother’ is exquisite. The final song, ‘Fixed Up Heart’ with music by Steven Landau, is another fluid blending of lyrics, guitar, piano, singer and song. Listen to this CD to discover which songs are your favorites.

Okay, I have to comment on ‘Hello Nancy, Goodbye Ron.’ Nancy Reagan and Ronald Reagan… D.C. has captured honest feelings that many of us experienced in dealing with this iconic couple - the man who turned his back on the AIDS crisis, and the woman who fights for stem cell research and a cure for Alzheimer’s. When the people in this country are so divided (so the media tells us), it is comforting to experience art of this sort, that deals with the grey areas (or, since we are divided red from blue, should that be the violet area?)

This is a great CD. It does grow on you as D.C. says. I find that it is a wonderful CD to listen to on the iPod, as it gives it that same intimacy with which the CD was recorded. Buy the CD, tell your friends about the CD. Go see D.C. live on December 4th in Manhattan at the Metropolitan Room and, believe it or not, in Fargo North Dakota playing Buddy in ‘Follies: The Concert’ at North Dakota State in February of next year.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope you’ll take the time to visit D.C.’s website and buy an album or two (the holidays are coming, and D.C.’s music makes for great gift giving).

How And When To Teach Your Kids About Money

Posted on July 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

As a child, money seems to somehow “grow on trees” as mum and dad always appear to have money to buy things.

Even though this is clearly not the case, it’s unfortunately the perception of children who live in a very consumer oriented world.

Rather than letting your child grow up thinking that money comes easily, you need to institute some form of education that teaches them how to understand and use money wisely.

Teach them young and they will carry forward that knowledge and live a better financial life. Here’s a few tips how :

From ages 3 - 7

1. Show them the value of money by explaining what $2 can and can’t buy. It may be an idea to do this whilst walking down the super market aisle or toy aisle (if you are game!).

2. Let them watch you pay for things. You may even start by letting them hand over the cash or pressing the OK button on the ATM.

3. Do not give them notes. Pay their pocket money in coins as your children need to understand how to allocate their money.

4. Show them how to visualise their goals. Get them to draw what they want to save up for. Keep the goals realistic otherwise they will very quickly lose interest.

What they learn -

? Different things have different values.
? Money simply doesn’t grow on trees and that you have to work for your money.
? You have to allocate your money for different things

From ages 7 - 12

1. Encourage them to participate in the school banking programme. This will give them a sense of regular commitment to savings.

2. Get them interested in looking at their bank statements and following how much money they are saving. This will get them used to scanning banking paperwork.

3. Get them to start thinking of a long term saving goal and work out how long it will take them to reach that goal.

4. Give them a combination of notes and coins for their pocket money. This will really strengthen their allocation abilities and efficient usage of spare change.

5. Start showing them the family bills and explain positively that the bills have to be paid to keep the family going.

What they will learn -
? Saving is a planned activity and something that needs a bit of thought rather that just putting away what’s left over.
? The value of small change
? It takes a fair bit of money and good money management skills to keep a roof over their head.

For Teenagers

1. Encourage them to set up their own bank account and use internet banking.

2. Direct debit their pocket money into their account. This will get them used to dealing with intangible payments, and that electronic money is not just a set of numbers.

3. Make them responsible for their own bills such as mobiles. This is a very quick way to teach them how to spend wisely.

4. Try not to lend money to them for purchases that are of an extravagant nature. If they really want it, encourage them to get a part time job to save up enough. If you do loan money to them, do so only on the grounds that you will reduce the amount of their pocket money until the loan is paid.

5. Charge them board if they have a part time job - this will start getting them into the habit of paying their way for things they take for granted - like food and shelter!!

6. Introduce them to the concept of return on investment. Show them the value of putting some of their money into high interest savings accounts or even into managed investments.

7. Highlight the fact that if they start now they will be so much better off down the track.

What they learn -

? Not only will they learn more modern and more efficient banking techniques they will also learn how to curb their wants, or find ways to earn rather than going into debt for something that is not totally necessary.

? It takes money to create money.

Tyre Recycling

Posted on July 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Under European law it is no longer possible to dump car tyres into landfill sites which means we have to find a solution to the problem of what to do with old tyres when they have reached the end of their life. According to the Lets Recycle website, there were nearly half a million tonnes of waste tyres generated in 2004 and more than half of these were either recycled or reused, some 15% were also used as fuel, 7% exported and 6% used in landfill construction. However, nearly 59000 tonnes still ended up in landfill which was a waste of a resource, a fire hazard, and a threat to the environment. As more and more people become car owners, the problem of what to do with used tyres is set to continue.

Tyres are classed as ‘controlled waste’ so there is a Duty of Care placed on waste producers to dispose of old tyres responsibly and in an environmentally friendly way. The EU landfill directive banned the dumping of whole used tyres in 2003 and now even shredded tyres cannot be deposited in landfill sites. The only exceptions to this are new tyres, tyres with a diameter larger than 1400 mm and bicycle tyres, which can still be disposed of in landfill sites. One thing you as a consumer can do is to extend the life of your tyres and collectively over time this can reduce the amount of tyres being disposed of each year.

Extending the life of your tyres

Having your tyres retreaded or buying retreads is environmentally friendly, cheaper, and they are just as safe as new tyres. Since January 2004, it is mandatory for all retreaded tyres to be manufactured to ECE regulations and for retread producers to be licensed. However, in order to have your tyres retread they have to be kept in good condition as they can only be retread if the tread hasn’t worn down too much.

Keeping your tyres in good condition not only extends the life of your tyres and reduces the number of tyres that need to be disposed of, it is also safer. Protect your tyres by driving at sensible speeds and avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking. Far less oil is used to retread a tyre than to make a new tyre, (approximately 4.5 gallons less on a passenger car) so energy and natural resources are saved in the process.

Tyre Disposal

The Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) was set up in 2004 and operates a responsible recycler scheme which aims to ensure that all their members dispose of tyres in a way that is environmentally friendly. This could mean recycling them, reprocessing them or finding another use for them. Most tyre retailers are using registered members of the TRA to collect and dispose of their old tyres and will often display a certificate so that you can be sure they are dealing with old tyres responsibly, however, if you don’t know for sure just ask them.

Although most tyres are disposed of properly by responsible citizens, there are still some people who choose to dump their tyres illegally in the countryside, particularly as the removal and disposal of old tyres usually involves a small fee. Dumping tyres illegally is not only harmful to the environment; it is also unfair on the others who choose to dispose of their old tyres in the proper manner.

What happens to old tyres?

There are many ways that old tyres can be disposed of responsibly and these include the following:

Landfill Construction

Tyres can be used as part of a Leachate draining system in landfill sites, although only a relatively small number of tyres are used for this purpose out of the millions that are scrapped each year. Tyres used in this way are exempt from landfill tax.

Reprocessed

When tyres are grinded down or shredded into small granulated bits or ‘crumbs’ they can be used for a variety of different purposes such as surfacing for sports and play areas, underlay for carpets, soles for shoes and even for road construction.

Fuel

Old tyres can replace some of the coal used to fuel cement kilns but stringent air emission limits apply to this type of operation

Serving another purpose

Tyres can also be given a second life by serving another purpose including as play items in children’s play areas, motorway embankments, crash barriers at racing tracks, noise insulation, containers for compost heaps, protection for shrubs and trees and so on, the possible uses are limited only by the imagination.

Exported

Some tyres are exported to meet foreign demand for retread operations

Conclusion

If you wish to dispose of old or unwanted tyres, contact your local tyre retailer who may be able to arrange collection and disposal for a small fee. You could also contact www.tyrerecovery.org.uk for more information. Alternatively, you could find another use for them yourself as a child’s swing perhaps or as protection for plants in your garden. Don’t tip on the fly, act responsibly and contribute to a greener environment.

Posted on July 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Have debts left you helpless and unable to have stability in your life? Well then it is time for you to think of a solution to these multiple debts. Looking for an answer, debt consolidation loans come out to be the most convincing of them all. With the debt consolidation loans, you can come out of your debt problems without any hassles.

Debt consolidation loans help in the removal of the multiple debts of a borrower which he is not able to repay at that point of time. More than two debts amounting to more than ?5000 can be consolidated using debt consolidation loans.

The debt consolidation loans unify all the debts of the borrower that he owes to various lenders and pays all of them with a lump sum payment. Now the borrower has only one loan to repay which is the debt consolidation loan. All this reduces the hassles of the borrower considerably.

The debt consolidation loans provide various benefits to the borrower like:

* Unification of multiple debts into one single loan
* Reduces monthly installments payable by the borrower
* Saves money as the loan is borrowed at a lower interest rate.
* Hassle free processing
* Can help in improvement of bad credit history

Bad credit score, CCJs, arrears and defaults do not impede the borrowers from taking up debt consolidation loans. Although they are offered slightly higher rates but that can be cut down by proper research for the loan which can be done online.

Debt consolidation loans can prove to be the appropriate choice for borrowers having debts amounting to more than ?5000. However borrowers are suggested to spend with more care in the future so that such conditions are not created again.

So, an apt choice can do wonders for the financial status. Opting for debt consolidation loan can improve the financial condition of a borrower and reduces his hassles.

Excitement of Educational Toys

Posted on July 29th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

To raise a child smart and bright,
The tools you use, are must be right!

To build a long-lasting beautiful house you will need: the right tools, the high quality material and a knowledgeable person to do that. Nobody will start building a house without proper education, great understanding and a proven plan. And no house can be built without strong and solid foundation.

Don’t you agree raising an intelligent, smart child is a similar process? Don’t you think that to be just a Parent is not enough? Don’t you feel we, as parents, have a great deal of responsibility; the house we are building should not collapse under the wind, should survive earthquakes and hurricanes? Do we have a sufficient education? Do we have the right tools ? Do we use the materials of the highest quality? Sometimes, choosing the right answer is quite a puzzling task.

There is no need to get a bachelor degree in parenting , and diploma is not required to raise a child. Clear vision, great determination and desire are essential in this challenging and exciting process. And it is crucially important to understand and be aware of what the right tools are. With tons of information and commercials coming our way every day, it is a bit confusing to make the best choice for your child. What should we consider: computer game or developmental puzzle game; electronic toy or simple educational wooden toy; Barbie doll or old-fashion bright hand puppet? With a lot of factors to think about, choosing the right toy of an educational, developing and learning nature is a very difficult job.

A child’s brain develops in a predictable sequence from the least complex functions to the most complex. The interaction of our genetic inheritance (nature) and environment (nurture) determines how child brain will develop. Providing our children with the right educational toys ensures ongoing stimulation and properly balanced child development. Our experiences affect our brain development. What we see, hear, smell, taste and touch are experiences, which make connections in our brain and make us smarter. Connections that we repeat become stronger. To find the most appropriate educational toys that stimulate child developmental, learning progress and fun for children to play with, it is vitally important. Choosing the right developmental toys and games will create the most wonderful and motivating experience for your child.

Ignite the passion for learning in your child with exciting and inspiring educational toys and games! There are many great child activities to try: color and shapes recognition, first letters and early reading, imaginative and logical thinking or basic math practice - just to name a few. There are games, which are easy to play, but teach like tutor, and the others - are exciting board games and stimulating activity for all family. Educational toys and games are simple and fun way to capture children’s attention and interest. At the same time, they playfully challenge children to learn and master life essential skills.

Follow your own instincts; memorize your own childhood with books, games and plain toys . Spend more quality time with your children, play and interact with them, read and tell them stories. Do not let your kids sit alone with electronic toy or in front of the computer or TV for long hours! Chose right, and enjoy watching your precious child growing strong, smart and capable of any achievement!

Retro Home and Bedroom Furnishings: A Look at the 70’s and 80’s

Posted on July 29th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Every twenty to thirty years, it seems that fashion tends to come full circle, with trends simply being recycled and updated. It could just be the vicious circle of history repeating itself, but it seems that even home design is doing the same thing. If you take a gander at the home furnishing offerings today, you’ll find that many of the decorations and designs are retro ‘, imitating the wave of the late 1970’s through the 1980’s. In case you weren’t around for the original styles, or have chosen to block out most of than span of time from your memory, let’s take a trip back and look at the blast from the past that is piled on store shelves today.

Tie-Dyed Clothes. Remember when bright, tie-dyed colors were all the rave? In the early eighties, everything was a starburst of six and seven different colors that didn’t really match and could make your eyes water with the brightness of the design. Home furnishings have begun to incorporate this design again, with wall hangings of tie-dyed starbursts, throw rugs in the pattern, bedspreads full of tie-dyed spots, and even some couches artfully designed in such a manner. If you like the bright, anything goes style, this may be for you!

Psychedelic. Okay, so in the sixties and seventies, there were reasons for glow in the dark, psychedelic paint and black lights, though these excuses were usually less than savory and not entirely legal. Today, though, the bright T-shirts and posters have returned, with many individuals covering walls with glow in the dark designs and even painting whole walls in psychedelic paint, installing black lights in their recreation rooms or game rooms for entertainment purposes. This retro design option, coupled with disco lights that are more reminiscent of the late seventies, can really take you back to the day ‘, especially if you put in the right music!

Lava Lamps, Most lamps are made to assist with lighting a room and giving you something to read by. On the other hand, in retro times, the lava lamp was more about putting on a show when it was dark in the room. Lava lamps have begun to grace the shelves of not only specialty and gag gift stores but also typical home decor departments in other stores, including superstores and department stores. Add to this the fact that the lightning ball ‘ has also made a comeback from its loss of popularity in the mid-80s, and you’ve just jumped back in time.

Shag Carpets and Bean Bags. Rather than sitting on real furniture, designers are now suggesting a return to the basics. In the seventies, everyone had thick, shag carpeting, and now it’s become popular again (as opposed to Berber, the thinnest possible carpet around), only this time it’s not in mixed blue and green colors (thank goodness!). And, with the modification of the original bean bag chair that was so popular in the 80s to seat more than one comfortably on plush material or even leather rather than sticky vinyl, you can have your whole home outfitted retro style!

Drupal CMS

Drupal CMS

Drupal is a free modular content management framework, content management system and blogging engine which was originally written by Dries Buytaert as a bulletin board system. Today, it is used by many high-traffic websites, including The Onion, Spread Firefox (Glaxstar, see below), Ourmedia, KernelTrap, and the Defective by Design campaign. It is particularly popular for building online communities, and has the tag line Community plumbing . Drupal is written in PHP. As of January 29, 2007, the current version was 5.1.

Content Management System

Drupal has a basic layer, or core, which supports pluggable modules which enable additional behaviors. The modules available for Drupal provide a wide assortment of features, including e-commerce systems such as the Amazon Items module[1], work-flow, photo galleries, mailing list management, and CVS integration.

Drupal’s modular design and well-documented, clean codebase make it easier for individuals with knowledge of PHP to write code for additional features. Drupal is often used to build sites that focus on user communities.

Modules

Drupal’s taxonomy (or categorization system) enables the site administrator to determine how content is classified. Once set up, the taxonomy module can “automatically classify new content”. This flexibility without the need for coding differentiates Drupal from similar systems; however it also renders the configuration more demanding and in some cases more time consuming.

The Actions and Workflow modules provide an example of the high degree of automation possible with Drupal. This requires the two modules to be set up using features from both. Extensive support documentation and videos are available to help configure the Workflow and Actions modules to achieve tasks such as sending out notices of new content.

Drupal achieves clean integration between the core and the modules via a system of hooks, or callbacks, to allow modules to insert functions into Drupal’s path of execution. Drupal core provides protection against many of the usual security problems, like SQL injection.

Themes

Most themes for Drupal are written in the PHPTemplate engine or the XTemplate engine. Earlier templates used hard-coded PHP.

Earlier versions of Drupal’s theming system were criticized [6] as being less design-oriented and more complicated than the systems for Mambo and Plone. The inclusion of the PHPTemplate and XTemplate engines in Drupal has addressed some of these criticisms.

Explanation of the Offside Rule

Posted on July 28th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Offside Rule - Usually, soccer rules are easy to grasp even by someone that’s watching the game for the first time in his life. You foul someone, you get penalized. You hit him in the box, his team gets a penalty. The ball goes beyond the marked area, it’s an out throw. Everything is really basic, except the soccer offside rules. This is one tricky rule and although it’s not in the original soccer cookbook (as in, it was added over the course of time) it’s a much needed one, so that’s why I’ll try to explain it a bit.

The offside trap rule only applies to attackers and it is meant to regulate both team’s positions on the pitch. Without an offside rule, an attacker could simply stay in the other team’s penalty box, receive balls and try to score. This would pin down the defenders and they would virtually be unable to play anywhere else outside their own penalty box, since their main job would be marking the striker that is lazying off in there.

It’s also a known fact that attackers generally don’t have the same effort requirements on the pitch, since they only need to participate in one phase of the game (the offense), unlike defenders and midfielders who have to participate in both the offense and defense, thus having to run more. So now that you know WHY the soccer offside rule is there, let’s see WHAT it is anyway.

There are two phases of the offside soccer rule: the offside position and the offside trap sanction. If an attacker is in an offside position, he will only be sanctioned if the ball is heading towards him and he has an intention to play it. Otherwise, if he skips the game, he will not be called, despite having a clear offside position.

An attacker is in an offside position if he is closer to the other team’s goal line than the ball and the second last opponent. You’ll often hear people say he was in offside, because he was further towards the goal than the LAST defender . This is actually not a correct statement, since this doesn’t take the goalkeeper into account, so the LAST defender is actually the second last, as the above mentioned offside rule shows.

So let’s say that team Yellow is attacking and Red is defending. The ball is at the feet of Yellow’s midfielder and the Yellow attacker is a few meters further to the Red team’s goal line, than the last Red defender. Then the Yellow attacker is in an offside position, but the referee will only call an offside sanction if the Yellow midfielder passes the ball to the Yellow attacker while the latter is in the offside position.

If you’re new to soccer, the offside rule might need a bit of getting used to, but you’ll soon be able to spot exactly how and why someone was called offside if you watch a few matches. Note that sometimes, the position of the attacker and the other team’s defender are so close together, that the referee will have hard time deciding whether or not an offside should be called.
