Dog Training - A Dog’s Nature

Dogs are surprisingly complex creatures.

Some official estimates of the number of breeds reaches as high as 800 in Western countries alone. Even given that distinguishing one breed from another can be carried to absurd extremes, the variety is astonishing from a human perspective, who have, perhaps, a dozen ‘breeds’.

Complicating the picture still further is the well-known fact that dogs have descended from wolves but began domestic interaction with humans over 10,000 years ago. As a consequence, there are behaviours that develop regardless of circumstances and some that are as unique as the human the dog is paired with. Still, some common traits stand out.

Dogs are predators.

That doesn’t mean they necessarily hunt and attack every passing cat or rat, but the capacity is always in them. With acute hearing and head muscles that allow precise orientation of their ears, dogs can pick up a range of sounds and locate the source quickly and with high accuracy.

A dog’s field of vision is higher than that of humans. Their field of view has been estimated from 180-270 degrees, by comparison to a human’s 100-150 degrees, allowing them to track events better.

And, of course, there’s that famous sense of smell. Citing figures such as having 25 times as many scent-receptor cells or being able to sense concentrations 100 million times smaller than humans conveys the fact one way.

Another is to report behaviour. Golden Retrievers, for example, can smell gophers through two feet of packed snow and a foot of frozen earth. And, they’ll dig through it to get to the gopher. That’s predatory behaviour.

Dogs are social animals.

That’s common knowledge, of course. But, though known, it’s often ignored. Individuals will often lock a lone dog away in a garage or pen, or on a rope in the yard for long periods. This isolation from contact with humans and other animals invariably leads to fear and/or aggression and other forms of maladjustment. Dogs need companionship in order to develop healthy behaviour.

Isolating a dog for brief periods can be a useful training technique. Fear of expulsion from the pack can incense overly assertive, alpha-status seeking dogs into alignment with the trainer’s goals. In any human-dog pair, the human must be the alpha (leader). The alternative is property destruction, human frustration and unsafe conditions for people and dogs.

But excessive time devoid of social interaction with another dog, the human, or even a friendly cat harms the dog’s psychology and leads to unwanted behaviour. Even guard dogs have to be able to distinguish between external ‘threats’ and members of its own ‘pack’.

Dogs are exploratory.

Like the two-year-old humans at roughly their same mental level, dogs learn by exploring their environment. And like those humans, they can engage in destructive behaviour. Dogs are no respecters of property. Training and an appropriately selected set of objects and suitable area can channel that behaviour into something acceptable to humans and healthy for the dog.

Providing toys with characteristics very distinct from human property, such as rawhide bones rather than rubber balls that are hard to tell from children’s, leads to less confusion and misbehaviour. In many cases, however, the problem is solved by scent. The dog’s toys may look like the child’s, but smell very different.

Some amount of digging may be inevitable as part of the dog’s exploration. Be prepared to patch holes in lawn if the dog is unsupervised for very long. Plants can usually be protected with cayenne pepper paste, bitter apple and other preparations.

Dogs are scavengers

Dogs will eat deer droppings, even when they have perfectly sound and ample diets. They’ll chew on dead rats, eat grass and ingest a wide variety of things that their own experience shows causes upset stomachs. And they’ll repeat the behaviour day after day.

Acknowledging their limited ability to connect cause and effect when those are separated in time is a must in order to keep them healthy and safe.

Recognizing a dog’s nature, and working within in it rather than against it leads to less frustration for both human and dog. Enjoying the beneficial aspects, such as spontaneous dog hugs (leaning into a leg), paw offering and a head laid on the lap are just a few of the rewards.

Valerie Dancer - I have owned dogs for 42 years. Learning to train from my mother who trained to county level. Over the years I have found that the old ways of training are not always the best, that praise is the best form of training, and the younger the dog, the easier it is to train. www.dogtrainingproblems.biz http://www.dogtrainingproblems.biz .

Making Low Rate Credit Cards Possible

Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

While plenty of cardholders around the world suffer from unpaid debts due to unsurpassable high interest rates, there are also some who enjoy low rated credit cards plus other benefits. Are there secrets on how to acquire a low interest rate credit cards or owning one that offers rewards?

Several people claim that credit cards are no other than a heavy yoke to their pocket. They would express their heartfelt hate to the credit companies and banks that do not in any way lower their rates though they maintain a good standing and credibility with them. How could these things go possibly true and untrue?

All credit card companies, except otherwise for some that chooses not to, apply the APR or known as the Annual Percentage Rate. APR is the interest being charged by the credit company to the borrowers. This interest rate includes other fees and add-on costs that is part of the transaction. There are other companies that associate APR with the penalties due to late payments, transaction fees and other forms. The APR may serve as the ground rate in which a lender can compare with other companies. There are provisions that mandate credit card companies to show the APR to customers so that the latter may have enough reason to whether go for the said credit line or not depending on the rate. In general, 12 % per annum is the accepted APR that is being asked from the client. However this rate may be changed and made higher but then it will need the approval of the authority. There are banks that convert APR into monthly rates but when compounded, the rate is just equivalent to the APR.

There are still a lot of fees that a credit company may ask from the client. APR is just one of plenty yields that they ask one to pay. But then, these additive rates maybe prevented or are scraped out by you through your company.

There is one possible way to get a low interest rate credit card. That is to look for a card with low APR and offers constant rating as long as your account is active. Here are some pointers in which one may use in order to find a good rate or better yet low interest rate credit cards.

-Beginners must seek for banks or any lending companies that offers low APR and penalty rates. These will help you check on whether you can possibly pay your balances or not. You can also ask the company if the interest rates that they have are constant from the activation of the account. If not, ask if the fluctuations or inflations are small enough that you can bear. Old card holders may call their credit card companies and ask whether they can convert the rates into a lower one. If not, tell them to cancel the account and try to temporarily transfer the balance into your other accounts and then open another with low interest rates.

-Keep yourself updated with the press releases of the Federal Reserve Board. This will help you know the current average accepted rate as compared to your accumulated earnings.

-Maintain a good credibility with your bank. Payment must be done ahead or on time to prevent penalties and to further solicit trust from your credit card company. Many good payers are being cared for by the lending companies.

When all these things does not work for you, then try some other ways without compromising your money and without dumping yourself into a pile of debt.

MacGyver (Season 2) DVD Review

Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

A unique and different kind of TV action series, MacGyver made its television premiere in the Fall of 1985 to much fanfare. Audiences immediately responded to the title character and his unusual penchant for turning everyday items like chewing gum and paperclips into elaborate life-saving contraptions. In this way, it maintained a slight resemblance to The A-Team, and this recurring plot device helped MacGyver build a strong cult following…

Richard Dean Anderson plays the title role of MacGyver, an energetic employee of the fictional Phoenix Foundation for Research. An unorthodox hero by action series standards, MacGyver has a deadly fear of heights. A pacifist who refuses to use weapons, he relies heavily on his ability to use his brain and tinker with the various materials at his disposal. MacGyver’s best friend, and the director of the Phoenix Foundation, is Pete Thornton (Dana Elcar). Pete often sends MacGyver on Foundation missions and sometimes comes to his aid (usually after MacGyver has saved the day). In addition, MacGyver is joined on a regular basis by his airplane pilot friend Jack Dalton (Bruce McGill), a man who constantly entangles himself in illegal activities and other troublesome situations. Between the usual slew of bad guys, the vendetta of archenemy Murdoc (Michael Des Barres), and his multitude of troublesome friends, MacGyver is always in the midst of interesting and dangerous events, and the show’s true entertainment value derives from watching MacGyver’s distinctive method of dealing with each one…

The MacGyver (Season 2) DVD features a number of action-packed episodes including the season premiere The Human Factor in which MacGyver and the Phoenix Foundation are called upon to test the security of a top-secret military installation. When MacGyver makes a bet with the security designer, Dr. Jill Ludlum, he successfully gains entry, but the automated system traps them both inside (with a dwindling supply of oxygen) where they’re forced to race for their lives against a ticking clock… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include The Road Not Taken in which MacGyver encounters his former fianc?e while helping a nun, and Birth Day in which MacGyver must guard a pregnant woman from her husband, who’s out to kill her…

Simple Trout Fishing

Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Here’s a really simple way… to catch stream trout using your spinning rod.

If you have ever wanted to fish for trout in a stream but are frustrated by the thought of equipping, learning, and mastering fly casting, here is an alternative. You can be on a stream, fishing and catching trout with a minimum of expense and frustration.

All trout respond to salmon eggs used for bait.

This method of fishing salmon eggs is simple, deadly, and does not kill the trout. Almost all the trout hooked will be caught in the mouth, just like fishing with the fly.

The few components can be purchased at any fishing supply stop, even at a fly fishing shop.

Your shopping list of items to start is very short. The heart of the method is to use a very small float as a strike indicator to float the salmon eggs naturally in the current of the stream.

The small Styrofoam floats used as strike indicators for fly fishing nymphs are ideal. Purchase a few floats that are 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch in diameter. The purpose of the float is to indicate when a trout takes the salmon egg.

Beneath the float about 12 inches attach a very sharp hook.

The first choice in hooks are the extremely sharp Gamatszu hook in size eight. If these are not available, Owner hooks are just as good.

A distant third choice is the Eagle Claw Laser sharp brand of hooks.

You may need some very small split shot weights if the line on your spinning reel is larger than six pound test.

If you need to add weight to the rig to cast it, place one very small, 1/8 inch, split shot directly below the float.

This will provide a little casting weight without killing the natural action of the salmon egg.

Salmon eggs are the first choice for bait.

The bright red processed salmon eggs are found almost every where fishing supplies are sold in trout country. The Green Label Patzutkes brand are a favorite. These are usually less than 1/4 inch in diameter. Place two or three of these salmon eggs on the hook. It is not necessary to cover the entire length of the size 8 hook.

The casting style is a flip of the bait into the water.

Merely swing the bait with the bail open on your spinning reel or button held down on the spin cast reel. Control the line with your hand that does not hole the rod. This is exactly the same technique that bass fishermen call flipping . The casting distance is only a few feet at best.

Flip the float into the head of an eddy or just behind a rock. Let the float be carried down stream until the current straightens out your line and the salmon egg is forced to the top of the water.

The strike is very subtle.

When a trout takes a salmon egg, the float will quickly dip under the water. This dip will happen quickly and then the float will surface and continue downstream as normal.

Set the hook as soon as you see the dip . A lot of the time you will have a trout hooked in the lip or the corner of the mouth. The trout can be returned unharmed to the water if you are practicing catch and release.

At first, you may set the hook and simply pull the float and hook away with nothing. This is very common until you develop the feel for striking quickly. Set the hook at every indication of a dip and you will be surprised at how many trout you will hook.

This method can be used with a fly.

If you are fishing in a restricted fly and lure only water, replace the salmon eggs with a size 14 or 16 dark colored nymph fly. The same technique is used to present the fly but the strike of the trout will be even slighter and quicker. You will have a lot more misses as the trout take and reject the fly very quickly.

The salmon egg makes them hold on a bit longer so that you have time to react.

————————————————————

This method can produce a lot of trout for very little outlay of cash and time.

You will be amazed at the number of trout you can hook standing in one spot. If you fish quietly, a good feeding run will produce several trout.

Practice conservation please. Don’t use this method to kill a lot of trout. Take a few for dinner if you so desire but only what you can consume.

How To Use Sequence to Persuade Anyone

Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Going in a logical order makes sense to everyone. You go through a grocery store in the same order each time to make sure that you buy everything on your list. You travel the same way to work in order to get there in the same amount of time each day. In the rules of persuasion, you can also use the idea of sequence in order to get anyone to see your point of view - even if they don’t agree.

Foot in the door

One of the most common uses of sequence in persuasion is the idea of foot in the door. In this technique, you will start by getting someone to agree with something small and then slowly build up to something bigger. You might use the example of a child that wants something from their parents. They start by asking for only a dollar, and then they ask for more money, a ride, as well as permission to sleep at someone’s house. This method works because it creates a bond between the two people that are talking to each other. Because they have agreed on the first step, they are more likely to be able to agree in the second request.

In terms of your relationships, this technique works well when you’re unable to understand each other’s permission. What you can do is see if you can agree on smaller parts of each other’s arguments and then slowly build up to understanding and agreement.

Door in the face

Another common persuasion method that involves sequence is the idea of door in the face. This is much different from foot in the door as it uses the idea of not agreeing or having something that one person wants, but the technique creates a need for them to agree anyways. A good example of this is a great vacation package with everything that you want in it - good location, good accommodations, and a low price. You’re already emotionally invested in it, so when the travel agent tells you that the location isn’t the best one that there is, unlike the original offer, but since you’re still thinking of the first plan, you take the package anyways.

In your relationships, you can use this technique to help create a better housekeeping system in which you take on more of the burden of the chores, though your partner will have to do the harder ones.

Leading to the benefits

You can also use a sales technique to help in your relationship. By giving your partner more and more benefits in a discussion, you will create an attractive offer for them to comply with. For example, you can talk about chores (once again) in terms of what your partner will do and what you will do in exchange. When you create a large list of things that you will do, it seems like your partner is getting more out of the ‘deal.’ However, this list doesn’t have to be comparable so long as it seems longer and thus more valuable.

Bait and switch

A common persuasion technique that is sometimes seen in newer relationships is the idea of bait and switch. By providing an example of how it will be to date each other, having a great time, and really enjoying each other’s company, a partner can think that they have a good idea of what your relationship might be like. But the trick comes when the dating actually begins and the relationship changes into something completely different. When one partner says that they will be one way and doesn’t follow through, it’s bating them and then switching the outcome.

Make it better than it is

Another way to create an influence on someone else is to show them all of the benefits of the outcome. This will create an attachment between the person and the action, but then you will change the steps that it will take to get there. While this changes the original offer, the person is so wrapped up in what they will eventually get that they don’t mind the change. This is often seen in travel agencies as well when the agent offers a wonderful vacation, but then concedes that the price is a lot higher than it was at first. The traveler already sees the beaches of Hawaii and just focuses on that.

7 Tips For Moving Day

Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Moving Day can involve so many emotions - excitement, elation versus nerves, panic and sadness. Here are some tips to lower the stress levels on moving day.

1. Have your mobile phone charged up! There you are waiting for the call from your solicitor to tell the money has been transferred, you can pick up the keys and you then realise your mobile phone isn’t working. Or worse still, the money has not been transferred and there is a problem. Make sure that you can be contactable throughout the day.

2. Pack, pack, pack. Don’t leave it too late. Especially if you’ve lived in your house for a long time. As you sit down to pack you may be tempted to sort, sort, sort which might end up to reminising over the family photo album. Of course that’s all very nice, but with so much packing to do, it’s the wrong time. Alternatively have the packing all done for you.

3. Be ready for the removal men. The beds need to be dismantled if appropriate, the cushions need to be bagged up, not left on the sofa. Mirrors and pictures need to be protected. The removal men may add extra protection to some items, but not all. Again consider having the packing all done for you - it costs more but it’s easier and good for stress levels.

4. Keep your most precious items packed in your own bag and take them with you as hand luggage - they may get lost or broken in the packing and removal process. Though it is unlikely it is possible and why risk it?

5. Don’t pack the hoover and basic cleaning equipment. When the removal men have gone you may need to give the house a quick hoover and wipe over ready for the new occupants. Moving in to a dirty house is grim. Hopefully the occupants of your new house will have done the decent thing. Again, you could have this done for you as part of a packing and removal package.

6. Be sure you have everything you need to have your favourite refreshments handy: be it beer, tea,(mugs and milk too), biscuits ready (and a tea towel). You might just need a cuppa after the removal men have left and your home is an empty nest. And when you arrive at your new house you’ll know where the kettle is amongst the boxes.

7. At the end of the day, enjoy your favourite take away and a bottle of champers on top of the boxes in your new home. On second thoughts, splash out at your new local restaurant instead. You’ve made it.

The Wedding Singer (DVD) Review

Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

A breakout comeback role for Drew Barrymore, The Wedding Singer is most likely Adam Sandler’s most enduring comedy film so far. Quite unlike other Sandler films, The Wedding Singer takes itself more seriously than Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore, perhaps because of its status as a romantic comedy. But whatever it is that makes this film different, it’s quite charming. And the on screen chemistry between Sandler and Barrymore is what drives the story…

The Wedding Singer focuses on the life of Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler), an aging twenty-something wedding singer whose dreams of rock star success are far from fruition. Sandler is perfect in this role which requires a lot of banter and ad lib with wedding parties. As the film begins, Robbie is singing at a wedding reception where Julia Sullivan (Drew Barrymore) is busing tables with her cousin Holly (Christine Taylor). The two meet outside where they assist (in vomiting) a young guest who got into the wedding champagne.

Robbie helps lift Julia’s spirits when he tells her about his own impending wedding to Linda (Angela Featherstone). Julia has moved into town to be with her fianc? Glenn (Matthew Glave), pompous jerk who she has doubts about.

But when Robbie’s fianc? Linda dumps him because he hasn’t turned out to be the rock star she always hoped for, the event drives Robbie into a deep depression. Singing songs such as Love Sucks at a subsequent wedding reception, he ends up getting drunk and ruining the gig. The father of the bride punches him out, but Julia is there to come to Robbie’s aid.

Over time, Robbie and Julia fall in love, but they can never find the right situation to tell each other how they feel. When Julia finally decides to tell Robbie, she knocks his door, but it’s answered by Linda (who decided she made a mistake in leaving Robbie). Coming home the night before in a drunken stupor, Robbie was unaware she had stayed over. Linda tells Julia that she and Robbie are back together, which prompts Julia to beg Glenn to go to Vegas to get married. Glenn agrees, and they book the next flight to Las Vegas.

When Robbie finds out what Linda has done, he tells her off and goes to find Julia. Holly tells her about the flight to Las Vegas, and Robbie rushes to the airport. Buying a ticket for the next flight to Vegas, Robbie ends up in first class on the very plane that Julia and Glenn are on. Together, with the help of other passengers, her sings a love song to Julia and the two are united forever…

A touching film, The Wedding Singer is also a hilarious romantic comedy the entire family will enjoy. A great 80’s soundtrack accompanies the film which is certain to satisfy that era’s music buffs. Overall, this is a definite must-see comedy and probably the best Adam Sandler film to date.

What Is Your Weakness

Posted on June 29th, 2008 in Uncategorized by leafs4594 || No Comment

Hello Champion, thank you for reading this. I hope that you are blessed by this article.

As Christians we all struggle with some form of weakness. Some struggle with Girls, some with Boys, some with money, some with lustful thoughts, some with masturbation, the list could go on.

The point i am trying to make is that the Devil is going to use your weakness to bring you down. Your Weakness is the Devil’s Strength and the Devil’s Strength is your weakness. Let me give you an example.

Lets say I have a passion for money. I love money. Money is my weakness. Now I am also heavily involved in Ministry in my church and the Devil knows that and doesnt like that. So what the devil does is create an opportunity for my weakness to be exposed and hopefully I will fall. So he may go and play with my Boss’s mind and tell him he thinks I should get a raise. Now the Boss in my work may tell me he is going to give me a raise next month but I will have to work extra hours on a Friday. Now Friday is when i minister at Youth Group and the Devil successfully puts me in a trap here. Im torn between my desire to make extra money or minister in youth group. The following day i go up to my Pastor in church and I tell him that I cant minister in Youth Group again because my job needs me to work extra hours and I must obey my boss. Did you see how easily I was captured by the enemy.

The devil is going to use your passions and use that against you. Your passions become your weakness. Whatever you love to do is what the devil is going to bring more of into your life so that you would be distracted. What are your passions? Are you making your passions your idol?

Moses’ weakness was his temper and he ended up hitting the rock twice, Solomon’s weakness was women and was led astray, Samson’s weakness was women and he ended up being defeated because of that. What is your weakness? Remeber your weakness becomes the devil’s strength. The devil is going to aim all his strength on your weakness to bring you down. Are you going to allow that?

We spend so much time working on our physical flaws e.g straightening our hair, working on our acne, exercising in gyms, eating properly, etc but how much time do we spend working on our spiritual flaws.

Im sure some of you have certain secret sins that only you and God knows about. The devil knows it too. Are you going to allow those sins to take over. If you give the enemy an entrance he is going to come in.

Here’s what i want you to do.

1. Spend some time and think about your weaknesses.
2. Acknowledge that they are your weaknesses and that they could be hindering you from your walk with God.
3. Ask God to help you to overcome this weakness..Make this your prayer everyday..
4. Find yourself people you can hang out with who can help you to overcome this weakness.
5. Continue to ask God to reveal to you areas where you might not be pleasing him in and to help you to fix them.

If you carry out these 5 steps you will slowly but surely begin to overcome these weaknesses and live the overcoming life you were saved to lived. Remember no one is perfect.

I hope this has blessed you. Please leave your comments on my page of what you thought of this article and feel free to share it.
