The holiday season is upon us, which can only mean one thing: electronics are at the top of everyone’s wish list. Even if you can’t snag a new PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii, there are still many electronics gifts that will delight your recipients. Here are just a few:

Cell Phones: Cell phone technology continues to improve, as do the features available on cell phones. A new cell phone, complete with a high-res camera, video functionality, and wireless adaptability, is certain to be a welcome gift. If that’s beyond your budget, opt for any of the number of cool cell phone accessories that are available.

iPods: An Apple iPod makes the perfect gift for anyone who enjoys music or television, even if they’re not tech-savvy. Not only can they download tunes, but increasingly, they can download television episodes that they may have missed. Again, if you can’t afford an iPod, there are any number of accessories - from earbuds to socks that are adorable and affordable.

Home Theaters: This year, why not indulge the whole family with a home theater? Flat screen TVs have come so far down in price that they’re more than worth the splurge. While you’re at it, get a collection of DVDs that every family member can enjoy!

Car Audio and Video: Entertainment has most definitely moved out of the home and into transportation. High-quality car audio and video equipment make wonderful gifts for family members on the go. Everyone can enjoy the high-quality sound that great car audio produces, while the kids in the family will be entertained on road trips with car DVD players.

Computers: For many people, computers aren’t a convenience - they’re a necessity. Everyone from adults who bring work home with them to students who have to research school papers (and book some time on one or more of the social networking sites!) will treasure a new computer. Again, prices on electronics have come down so much that either a notebook computer or a desktop PC is affordable.

Games: If you’re not able to nab one of the new gaming systems, don’t worry about it. There are still great games that are made for the Sony PlayStation 2, the Nintendo GameCube, and the Microsoft Xbox and Xbox 360. Final Fantasy XII, Guitar Hero II, Okami, LEGO Star Wars II, Madden NFL 07, and Viva Pinata, are all highly rated games for a variety of interests and age levels.

The bottom line is that, whatever the gift-giving occasion, you can’t go wrong with a gift of personal electronics. Your best bet is to find an online source that has deeply discounted electronics, continually adds new items to their inventory, and provides you with the perfect online shopping experience.

If you’re like many small business owners, you log at least 50 — possibly closer to 60 or 70 — hours a week in the harness. You may put in a few late nights each week… spend some hours on Saturday (perhaps even Sunday) wrapping up details…tend to start vacations a day late and return a day early…slip away from the family in the evening to handle a few just gotta get to papers, bids, plans, etc. In the constant battle to keep your bottom line in the black, you do the work of two or three employees.

In short, you may be a workaholic. Many workaholics are guilt-ridden, driven souls who — either due to fear of failure or genuine personal choice — exist only to work. They neglect their own needs, the needs of their loved ones…even their own health. Ironically, even the business eventually suffers. As they become increasingly task oriented rather than results oriented, the time they put in becomes self-justifying and their productivity plunges. Eventually, they can become so completely addicted to work that they burn themselves out…and burn out their personal relationships as well. They can end up broke, alone and in poor health, plagued with stress-related illnesses.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can become a positive workaholic! Positive workaholics live fast-paced, full lives. They work hard, but they also play hard. Most of all, they get a lot done and are generally successful in their business and personal lives.

How to become a positive workaholic: You are a resource. When it comes to efficient, quality productivity, you are a machine that creates value. You are also a human being. How can you operate at maximum effectiveness and efficiency when it comes to building and running your business…and also maintain a satisfying life for yourself and others away from work? Here are a few suggestions:

? Strive for balance in your life. Successful workaholics see themselves not just as business owners, but also as spouses, parents, members of the community, sports fans, charitable volunteers, boaters, etc. Though they may not mix business and pleasure, they make sure they include a healthy mixture of both in their lives on a daily basis.

Suggestion: Devote at least one focused hour each day to something (A) you value and enjoy and (B) that has absolutely no connection to business.

? Be goal-oriented. If you enjoy work for work’s sake, just dig a ditch each morning and fill it in each afternoon. Positive workaholics work to achieve specific objectives. They map out their life goals and their business goals. The work they do every day is undertaken to help bring them that much closer to their objectives.

Suggestion: Start by setting aside some time today to sketch out your most important business goals and personal goals…things you’d like to achieve or do by the end of this year. Put a star beside the single most important one on each list. Then develop the daily and weekly activities that will virtually guarantee your success in achieving these goals. This will give you tremendous focus each day.

? Boost your efficiency. Time can be your enemy or your friend. But people who achieve success in business and satisfaction in their personal lives do so partially because they have learned to accomplish more in less time.

Suggestion: Structure your time as if it were gold. Don’t walk into work, look around and then decide what needs to be done. Instead, begin each day with a to-do list of what you need to accomplish during that day. That way you can hit the ground running each morning and move steadily and efficiently from task to task.

? Enjoy the trip, not just the goal. Positive workaholics enjoy what they do…and the daily process of doing it. They love to get up and go to work in the morning…and they love to go home in the evening. They resist feeling guilty about either putting in too much time or taking too much time off. If they’ve planned their work and leisure time properly, they can focus on each separately and forget the other.

Suggestion: Build in rewards for yourself and your family…something to look forward to outside of work. Maybe it’s the Thursday all-you-can-eat buffet for lunch at your favorite restaurant or going to a movie in midweek. This expands to get-away weekends and at least one extended vacation each year.

? Build in family time or social time every day…even if you have to schedule it by the clock. This helps safeguard the things you really care about.

Suggestion: Actively plan family time. The best kind of activities tend to be daily routines. Consider things like planned dinners together

Denia is located just north of Javea. It is on the northern part of the Costa Blanca coast line, which runs from this city to Torrevieja in the southern part of the region. The weather in the area is similar to most of the Costa Blanca. The summers are hot and the winters are mild. There is little rain in the area. The city enjoys about 320 days of sunshine each year.

The city is located between two airports. Visitors can fly into either Alicante or Valencia airport. Each airport is about an hour and fifteen minute drive to the city. The best way to get around after arriving at the airport is with a car hire. This gives you the freedom to travel around the area. Car hire companies are available at both airports. Reserve your vehicle in advance, especially if you are travelling in the summer tourist season.

Things to do in Denia

Denia is a working town. While visiting here, you will be able to experience the authentic feeling of a Spanish town that you won’t get in the larger, more crowded tourist areas. If you want to spend some time enjoying the attractions in the larger cities, you can get around easily with a car hire.

Another benefit is the town doesn’t close down after the summer season. Many of the larger, tourist areas become like ghost towns at the end of the season. Stores, bars and restaurants close down. Here, you can enjoy shopping and restaurants all year long. This makes the city a good choice for off season vacations.

There is a lot to do for tourists as well in this city. There are two golf courses, Oliva Nova and La Sella for golf lovers. The weather in the area is nice enough for golf almost every day of the year. If you want a golf vacation, consider staying at the resort or close to it.

There are a few spas in the Denia area. A spa vacation is a great way to relax. You will leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Spas are located near the mountain and near to the beach areas.

Although the night life in this city isn’t as busy as the larger discos in Benidorm, there is some night life. There are bars, restaurants and entertainment available. Many places are located near the beach. The night life isn’t as wild as in larger tourist areas, but at least you won’t have to fight the crowds and will still be able to enjoy music and dancing.

The castle in Denia was built in the sixteenth century. The castle is a landmark in the area. Tours are available throughout the year. From inside the castle, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

Enjoying Nature in Denia

The towns of Denia and Javea are separated by Montgo mountain. This mountain has many walking routes. You can explore them on your own or go with a group on a walking tour. This is a great place to experience nature while on vacation. There are many great views of the water and town from this mountain.

Denia has 20 kilometres of beaches on the coastline. The beaches here are sandy and clean. They have received the Blue Flag award for good water quality and sand quality. You will enjoy relaxing on the beach and soaking in the sun.

A variety of water sports, including diving, snorkelling and wind surfing are available as well. There are some great areas for diving and snorkelling in the southern beach areas. Once is Les Rotes, a rocky area that is known for great snorkelling and diving. You will be able to view life under the water here.

Jerry Blackburn writes essentially for www.alicante-spain.com http://www.alicante-spain.com , a web publication about Spain and Alicante. His writings on Denia are found on www.alicante-spain.com/denia.html http://www.alicante-spain.com/denia.html and also other online publications.

The preeminent show of the 1990’s decade, Seinfeld grew from an idea of a show about nothing into a sacred pop culture icon - not that there’s anything wrong with that… The show follows the life of comedian Jerry Seinfeld and the exploits of his “short, quirky, bald guy” best friend, George Costanza (Jason Alexander), Jerry’s neurotic neighbor Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards), and Jerry’s ex-girlfriend Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Through the years, they’re joined by a loveable cast of characters that includes Newman, Uncle Leo, the Soup Nazi, Frank and Estelle Costanza, the Bubble Boy, and countless others…

The Seinfeld DVD (Seasons 1 & 2) offers the very first glimpse into the world Jerry, beginning with The Pilot (episode 1) which was originally titled The Seinfeld Chronicles. The first scene involves Jerry commenting to George about a button on his shirt (the same conversation later takes place in the last scene of the series finale). These opening episodes provide insight into the development of the show’s four primary characters with conversations that range from George’s initial admission that he’d like to be an architect (episode 2) to Kramer’s propensity for get rich quick schemes like a make-your-own-pizza pizzeria (episode 4). From day one, Seinfeld established itself as “must see TV,” creating such memorable episodes as “The Stock Tip,” “The Pony Remark,” “The Deal,” and “The Chinese Restaurant”.

Interestingly, in the pilot episode of Seinfeld, Elaine’s character does not yet exist, and Kramer’s character (not yet named Kramer, but Feldman) is more of an unemployed, pathetic, shut-in neighbor than the usual quirky and energetic Cosmo. Playing the role of the female in George and Jerry’s life is a wisecracking waitress named Claire (Lee Garlington) who never appears in later episodes.

Nevertheless, this initial episode exhibits the flashes of brilliance that made Seinfeld a cultural phenomenon. The show is essentially about nothing. George and Jerry do some laundry… Jerry and his neighbor watch some TV… George and Jerry have some coffee… During that time, the dominant topic of conversation is a girl that Jerry met while taking his comedy act on the road. She’s coming to stay at his place, but he doesn’t know whether he should pull out a mattress for her or not. Feldman (Kramer), George, and Jerry debate the topic endlessly until the woman arrives and Jerry learns that it’s all irrelevant because she’s engaged…

Below is a list of episodes included on the Seinfeld (Seasons 1 & 2) DVD:

This is a paper on how to promote your band, over the past 12 months I have been in contact with a hundreds of bands looking to become famous in LA. Everyone wants to a hit! Well it all comes down to being discovered! You can be the best band in the world and if you don&;t market yourself right well good luck! Lets analysis fortune 500 companies. Take a look at there budgets They dump 35% to 65 % or more of their profits back into marketing and advertisements every year. Becoming and remaining number one requires a lot of work. Advancing to more and more new customers not only requires more and more marketing but keeping the old ones happy!

Wanting to Promote your band with Live performances and marketing new ideas well you have come to the right spot.

Once people have bought a bands CD and their tee shirt, and seen the band live now what? Note, promoting a band is a lot of more then just t-shirts and cd&;s hell anyone can do that! You need to promote in many ways, just look at fortune 500 companies they email, do giveaways, mini dvd discs promo&;s, cold calling, internet marketing etc. You must do at least 3 forms of promoting to get a response out of your audience. The newsiest one for bands is musicmp3 ringtones which we will get into later.

We will go over many ways of promoting your band:

1. Great item that I have seen so far are mini DVD discs called pocketreels. GOTO www.pocketreels.com for more info on how to pick them up. These mini dvds can go a far way just think what people would do if you handed them a mini dvd. They go crazy and they are super impressed! Place a nice video of your band on it and see how many new customers you receive at your next show!

2. Having a photograph or videoagrapher at your shows to help promote your band is a good thing. They can take pictures and or videos and upload the images or videos to your website which can boost mailing lists and a fan club! And then they may be compelled to come to your next show and bring more friends or soak in the opportunities for fame and the live music experience itself. For video or photographer outlets call PR Productions at 310-694-8350 for CALIFORNIA only. They have the best crews around but they are not cheap. Shoots start at $400 + editing.

3. That brings us to a mailing list, each visitor to your website you should be collecting their email address so you can send them useful information like when your next show is going to be.

4. Promoting your band is not easy so do your self a favor and get a good publicist to promote your band. A good one can get you in 3 to 4 magazines and newspapers in one month for free, of course you have to pay the publicist but it will be well worth it. It can range from $400 to $2000. Note you can do this part yourself if you know how to negotiate with editors.

5. Promote your band by creating a really cool website! Check out www.royacom.com http://www.royacom.com to make yourself a website with a CMS system. CMS stands for Content Management system A good website will cost: starting at $1000 but it will have video, email list generators, photo section and best of all easy management. They are a little bit more then a regular website but the ROI

Or return on investment is greater then a plain website. You can change show times just like myspace and it makes it really easy for owners to manage so in the long run you save big!

6. Make a professional music video for your band or gig. This will help with promoting your band. High quality Video can be found at many locations for a crew with experience one west coast call 310-694-8350 for east coast goto the best New york production company click link or goto suitespotnyc.com/ http://suitespotnyc.com/

7. Saving the best for last Another great way to promote your band is by making a mp3 ringtone, or polyphonic ringtonefor example you can download a nickelback ringtone and wow free advertising everytime someone calls that person and bam there is a song on your phone. You need help making your own mp3 or polyphonic ringtone please goto A-FREE-RINGTONE.COM By making a ringtone like nickelback you can have your song ringing all over the world!

Your goal is to continue to reach more and more locals. Develop more ways to attract people&;s attention. Always have something on you to promote yourself with.

Just for example. In an area with one million people, if you are getting less than 100 people to every show, perhaps you could be doing much more to reach more of the people in the community?

It’s tough out there, and you must be relentless every day to meet new people, shake hands and hand out your mini DVD discs or if you can&;t afford mini DVD discs get free business cards by click here and smile at people who are passing by you on the street and in stores when you are out shopping alone or with friends, in bars carousing. Go out and meet new people. Walk up to people, introduce yourself, Hi, my name is Scott I play at ___ ___ place on blank night. What do you do? Here is my promo disc (mini DVD) with my video or here is my business card with my website on it. You can download my mp3 ringtone (or my polyphonic ringtone) for free at this address. “ Hand them a card with the information on it. Note always test all information you hand out before hitting the road. Nothing is worse then a fan going home and something you handing them not working!

Have a stack of Mini DVD discs or business cards or flyers in your pocket at all times ready to hand out. Make sure on your Mini DVD, Business card or flyer you have your contact information, website, and the next local performance. You do this 20+ times per hour for 2-3 hours and then youre distributing at least 50 mini DVD discs or business cards or flyers in those 3 hours.

You then go back to your car and re-stock. Grab something refreshing to drink, munch on a a sandwich, or whatever, and move on to the next part of town, or the next gathering of people. Or go to the next live gig, the next bar, the next scene etc. and you keep it going.

Once or twice a week, you hit Kinko&;s, or the copier next to your office desk and you photocopy flyers and any designs you&;ve created for promotion of your demos, etc. Better yet think ahead and goto gotprint.com much better deals then Kinko&;s. (EXAMPLE 5000 post cards for $99 full color first side!)

Sell yourself. Meet with people and sell yourself. They dont know what youre doing. And unless you sell yourself, they wont care about what youre doing. They want to care, but they depend upon YOU to make that happen. People want so badly to care about something besides there problems. They want something to believe in. Entertainment helps take them there. You can be that entertainer, that leader of willing people of all ages that helps them to believe that there just might be something in this world worth caring about. They want to listen to you, and they want you to tell them about something that really matters to you. So, stay informed and develop interests in topics that may be discussed, even debated. Maybe you are trying to make a difference in the world - one person and one performance at a time. People want to believe in this and they want to believe in you. so, get out there and make it happen.

Remember go armed for battle you would not go into a war forgetting your gun would you? Look at it this way you rather have a tank and machine gun with you when you goto war so do the same with life. Make sure you have mini dvd discs, your own ringtone songs, postcards with info, website and publicist! Good luck and most of all have fun with what you do! BLOG your experience at promote-band.blogspot.com/ http://promote-band.blogspot.com/ Hope all this helps J

What does your perfect business look and sound like? Are you one of those that is looking to make money at home for doing nothing? Or, do you plan to work hard to earn this income in such a way as so that it can actually replace the income you are currently making? While some individuals look at the opportunities and worry if in fact it is possible to not get ripped off, others take the time to actually learn what makes them work. These are the individuals that will succeed in their online business endeavors.

You Can Make Money Online

You just need to know how. Step one in the process is learning about some of the options out there that are available. We are not talking about scams and games but legitimate businesses that you can make a great deal of money with. Once you learn what is available, you’ll need to analyze which project fits with your specific being. What makes you tick, in other words? Finally, you’ll need to get yourself motivated and get your products out there.

What’s Out There?

There are many various types of businesses that you can secure. Many of them include selling products, software, ebooks, or the like. In some cases, you will want to produce and sell your own product while in others you’ll want to use another’s product to make a profit from. One this is for sure, you’ll probably need to set up a website to sell it.

In most cases, individuals will set up a website for the product that they are trying to sell and then promote that site. To do this, there are a number of means that will work for them. They can use ads from the search engine Google for example. Some like to fill their website with great content so that the search engines stop there when someone does a search for their product. You can create good articles about the products you are selling and submit them to article directories which will allow others to use them. This allows people to come to your site for their product needs. Still, there are many ways in which you can promote your product through a website.

Now, before you worry that you are not Internet savvy enough to actually make a website, there is just nothing to worry about. There are simple to use software programs that will basically do the work for you. These are not overly expensive and can easily help you to create a website within a matter of minutes.

What Works For You

The best advice that you can get is to take the time to look for opportunities that appeal to you. Ask which ones actually sound good to you and determine if you could get behind selling that product or working that business. If you can put your heart into it (not necessarily a lot of money!) then you can make it work.

After you have taken the time to find out which opportunities are available, look at them side to side and stay focused. You do not want to overwhelm yourself by trying to do too many things all at once. Instead, you need to determine which one you want to start with. You can always go back for more later! Then, you’ll want to build on your business through knowledge. This is very powerful to have. You can learn a lot about why a business works right online without paying a dime for it. You may want to purchase a product that will teach you, but even this is not necessarily going to make your business.

You have to make your business work. You have to invest your time in doing so. You may also need to invest a little money to earn money. But, the rewards from working your own business can be amazing. Thousands of people get started every day at a new online venture. Most of them fail not because the business will not work, but because they do not know what to do, don’t put their best foot forward and they simply do not step into it with the best attitude. The best attitude is that of keenness and enthusiasm to have a go and put some realistic time and effort into making money. For those that are ready and willing to change their life, there is a business out there with their name on it.

For most of her days and nights, Mary Magdalene’s life had been a mess!

Many today believe she was a prostitute, but we don’t know that for sure. However, if she was alive today, she might be a resident of a mental institution. The reason I think that is because the Gospels record she was inhabited by seven demons.

Mary Magdalene could also have been deeply depressed. And people in her condition today would probably be alcoholics or addicted to drugs. She may have been suicidal as well. Mary had no hope for a bright future and was probably deeply ashamed of the way she was living. Trapped in a sinister lifestyle, she couldn’t rise above what she had become — a deeply troubled woman rejected by most people.

But then everything changed instantly! She met Jesus one day and He did not reject her like almost everyone else did! In fact, He welcomed her and gave her the best gift of all — the gift of a brand-new life. She found — to her great joy — that she had peace of mind instead of tormenting thoughts! The degrading passions that drove her unmercifully were replaced by a deep self-sacrificing love for other people and especially for Jesus! What a transformation!

When Jesus gave her a brand-new life, He probably gave her a number of true friends as well — including some other loving women. They along with Mary Magdalene ministered to Jesus and His friends out of their own funds.

Soon personal tragedy overwhelmed her! Jesus — her Savior and Leader — was arrested, convicted and nailed to a Roman cross beside two criminals.

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, two wealthy and highly respected Jewish leaders, exposed themselves to public ridicule by giving Jesus an honorable burial in Joseph’s own new tomb. Crucified criminals were often thrown into a common burial pit. These two men tenderly took Jesus down from the cross and carried His body to the cave tomb. They wrapped His corpse around and around with yards of expensive linen material saturated with ointments and sweet-smelling spices. The ointment acted as a kind of glue which transformed the long cloth into a cocoon. Then they laid Him in the tomb and rolled a large stone over the entrance.

Mary Magdalene and at least one of her friends watched while Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus entombed Jesus in the cave that afternoon after His crucifixion.

Mary and her friends went home and rested when the sun went down that day in order to kept the Sabbath that began at sundown, so they didn’t have time to anoint Jesus’s body themselves.

However, early the next morning while the sun was just rising, Mary Magdalene and her friends brought sweet spices to add their spices to Jesus’s burial wrappings. While they journeyed to the cave, they questioned among themselves who would roll the stone away since it was too heavy for them.

Imagine how astonished they were when they arrived at the cave to discover the huge stone had already been moved! You see, there had been a great earthquake accompanied by the coming of an angel who rolled the stone away and then sat on it. When the guards saw this glistening being shining like lightning, they collapsed on the ground in a dead faint!

Mary did not realize that an angel had come because she didn’t see him when she arrived at the cave and only knew that the stone had been rolled away. Deeply disturbed, she discovered the body of her Lord was gone.

Mary Magdalene quickly found Simon Peter, who had betrayed the Lord, and John. She broken-heartedly announced, “They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher and we don’t know where they have taken Him!”

Immediately Peter and John rushed to the tomb to see what had happened while Mary followed at a distance.

Since John was younger, he outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first. John didn’t go into the tomb, but Peter did. A wondrous sight awaited their gaze! The linen wrappings wound so tightly around Jesus’s body were still on the shelf where His body had been, but the long burial cloth had collapsed without being unwound. And the napkin covering Jesus’s face was in a separate place by itself where his head had been. Most amazing of all, Jesus’s body was no longer in the mummy cocoon. No one had unwrapped the glued together layers of cloth! The resurrected body of Jesus had simply passed right on through the burial shroud!

When John observed the collapsed mummy cocoon, he believed Jesus had risen from the dead from the evidence right before his eyes!

Peter and John left the cave, but Mary Magdalene stayed behind. She was deeply grieved since she still thought Jesus’s body had been taken away.

However, her grief soon turn to ecstatic joy when not long afterwards she was visited by Jesus Himself!

This is how she met the risen Lord face to face.

First — as she turned to go home, she noticed a man standing in the garden near the empty tomb who she assumed was the gardener.

Try to put yourself in her place and imagine the glorious thrill that came to her heart when Jesus gently called her by her own name — Mary!

It was then that she recognized her risen Lord!

Jesus gave to Mary the awesome commission of telling His disciples this earth-shaking news — He is alive forever!

And that is how Mary Magdalene became an evangelist to the apostles.

Christmas comes but once a year… but at London’s big department stores, it lasts a whole lot longer.

Harrods and Selfridges both launched their Christmas promotions in the first week of August. Harrods came first with the opening of its Christmas World floor two months earlier than usual. Selfridges followed two days later.

In Australia, businesses are generally well prepared for the festive season by late August, early September. Props and decorations are rarely left to last-minute chance, and if they are, or some catastrophe befalls the hapless retailer, help is close at hand.

The specialty outlets catering only to Christmas are seasonal by nature. They operate for about six months of the year and work flat out right up until Christmas Eve.

The Christmas Cave operates the largest chain of stores in Australia devoted entirely to products for the festive season. Christmas Cave trades from August to early January, seven days a week, but the business is open by appointment at other times.

These superstores are located in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. They stock thousands of products - too many for the company to list online - so a store visit is recommended.

They certainly wouldn’t be the only ones, but some smaller retailer operators in the southern capital have been known to cut things fine. However, there’s a good reason and it revolves around a horse race.

“Cup Day is such a huge event for Melbourne that the city does tend to focus on it. After the Cup, there can be a bit of a mad panic when people say ‘Oh my God - Christmas is the next big thing’,” says Oswald Sealy’s Deirdre Plant, who enjoys advising people on ways to make their business sparkle and stand out from the crowd.

Plant, who is the visual merchandising manager at Oswald Sealy (incorporating Mei & Picchi) says there are no hard and fast do’s and don’ts for setting up a Christmas display.

“The display depends entirely on the retail environment. You can have a vague guideline for an individual decorating a tree, but most retailers want the colour theme to fit with everything else in their store. And they often don’t want trees at all. We sell a lot of over-sized stars. They go for them because stars don’t take up valuable floorspace.

“When they come to us, they virtually get free advice on how to do their windows, which is great for them.

“Many retailers have small windows. We can set up concept areas within the store so they can visualise how the props and decorations will fit in their own store setting,” says Plant.

Oswald Sealy is located in Fitzroy and supplies every state of Australia. The business also exports to Asia and New Zealand. A second, more luxurious wholesale showroom will open in Surrey Hills, Sydney, prior to Christmas, and a revamped website for online orders has just been relaunched.

“From the end of August through to the end of September and early October we get all our new products. But we always have our standard lines in stock, like the basic trees and tinsel.

“We like to display decorations in our store so retailers get an idea how to display them in their own store,” says Plant.

“We get all kinds of requests, especially for thrones and arches for shopping centres, and we just had an unusual request for a lifesize sleigh.”

For top-up supplies, Oswald Sealy remains open right up until Christmas Eve. It closes on Christmas Day, reopening on Boxing Day for the annual 50% off sale.

Make a checklist

Sally Clarkson of Chas Clarkson in Sydney says there are some basic rules guaranteed to take the stress out of Christmas.

Clarkson suggests retailers compile a simple checklist for their store in advance.

The checklist should include gift wraps for their complimentary gift wrapping service - to give that little extra to their customers - curling ribbons and bows to complete the sale, gift vouchers and envelopes, table trees to add some cheer to the sales counter, trees and decoration (using red and green leaf lights to create an instant Christmas feel), and Christmas lighting.

Other tips include tailoring decorations to incorporate company colours for a complete and effective corporate Christmas branding, and investing in commercial quality products to create a stylish and professional sales tool that will last for many years.

Last but not least, Clarkson says get organised early to reduce stress levels at the busiest time of the retail year.

“A lot of companies such as ourselves deal with people all over Australia. So while many of us may be based in Sydney or Melbourne, it’s because the population isn’t big enough to open a showroom in every state.

“We manage David Jones and Westfield. This year, we’ve designed a brand new corporate theme for Westfield Bondi Junction. Our corporate business is growing and growing because a lot of the larger companies prefer to have it managed for them,” Clarkson said.

Evelyn and Barry Cook opened The House of Christmas 20 years ago in Abbotsford in north east Melbourne, on the city edge just behind Collingwood Football Club.

It’s a seasonal business, well known locally, open from October 1 (for small retailers) through to Christmas. For the larger retailers (including clients like Rebel Sport, ANZ and Medicare Victoria) The House of Christmas has been in full swing for four months already.

“A lot of smaller shops don’t wake up until the beginning of November. Every year, we get last minute orders and requests. We’re used to the crazy last minute rush,” Cook says.

Aussie Christmas

Fogg Productions is well known Australiawide for its special lighting effects and Australian themed Christmas displays.

If a shopping centre wants flying kangaroos lighting up the night sky, Fogg Production’s Roger Foley is their man. Darling Harbour shopping precinct in Sydney once used Foley’s boomers (kangaroos), based on the Rolf Harris hit Six White Boomers, to spectacular effect.

Foley has been in the business for 40 years, but he wasn’t always creating Christmas trees and lights. He started out in the 1960s doing psychedelic light shows with rock bands.

He and his team are responsible each year for the Christmas Tree of Light, reputedly the world’s brightest Christmas tree, at Cockle Bay in Sydney. “We check every couple of years to make sure it remains the world’s brightest tree,” he says.

“I have done a lot of work with David Jones, Grace Bros, Myer, Roselands, Westfield and numerous small stores over many years developing theatre lighting techniques for use in window displays.

“We also manufacture specialty items with a particular Australian theme. Some can be made easily so a late order is often acceptable. While we make very large traditional bells, balls and bows, we also make kangas, koalas, kookas and many other items for an Australian clientele.”

Foley and his associates are a small, highly manouverable group with headquarters at Hazelbrook in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

“Many artists are complete snobs when it comes to retail. They think they will have to compromise their work and do something lesser than they otherwise would.”

Department stores work their window magic

By Lyn White, senior journalist for Inside Retailing

There is one thing Myer’s new owners won’t be changing this year, and that’s the lavish animated Christmas window displays - classic, timeless images that define Melbourne in December.

The tradition of the Myer Christmas windows began in 1956. It was the year of the Melbourne Olympics and also the year television was introduced.

Myer’s first chief visual merchandiser, the late Fred Asmussen, was inspired by the displays he had seen in the windows of New York department stores and set about creating something magical for the people of his own city on an equally grand scale.

Throughout the years, the Myer windows have delighted generations of children and adults, with families from all over Victoria making the annual pilgrimage to see them. The themes have included much loved fairy tales, famous children’s books and concepts from the ballet and opera.

The flamboyant Asmussen lived in South Yarra in a house that had 13 chandeliers and a black and silver dining room. He had an all-white garden. He loved his job and he gave style to Myer. Asmussen not only created the Christmas windows, but was also Moomba’s famous float designer.

The 1956 window was not a fairy tale or famous story, it was called Santa at the Olympics. Subjects over the years have included Santa’s Journey into Space, Chinese Fairytales (1967), Arabian Nights (1966), Gilbert and Sullivan (1982), Wind in the Willows (2001) and Peter Pan (1964 and 1990).

Deb Burkin is Myer’s current creative concept brand manager, windows and events.

“Our animated windows feature in the Bourke St Mall store and they are an absolute institution.

“These incredible windows are a full year in production. We also have our generic Christmas overlay, which is a more contemporary window interpretation extended through all the Myer stores.

“There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the Bourke St display. It’s the element of surprise. People don’t know what to expect or how the display is created, and that’s the way we like to keep it so as not to spoil the mystique,” Burkin says.

“We have a creative panel. We might chat to Universal (Pictures) or we might talk to different publishers to see what’s relevant. Then about three of us get together with four or five ideas. We make a selection and a judgment based on the target customer, which is a child aged five or six through to the child’s mother and grandparents.

“It takes about a fortnight to install the window displays. In the middle of this month we do a full setup off site in Port Melbourne. We then pack it all up and send it to the respective destinations - Bourke St Mall and Brisbane City for the end of this month. The theme is the same for both cities. Finally, we have our big reveal in the middle of next month following a top-secret dress rehearsal.

“There are about 60 people employed contractually to do the work. There are costume designers, people who hand-mould the figurines, scenic artists and the technical crew.”

Not all Myer store windows can incorporate the spectacular animation. For example, in 2003, 10km of cabling was used in the construction of the How the Grinch Stole Christmas window setting.

“In Sydney, where the windows aren’t deep enough, we’ve compensated by having an amazing SantaLand for the children,” Burkin says.

Likewise, the windows of David Jones’ flagship store in Sydney are a huge drawcard for people of all ages and from all parts of NSW.

The Elizabeth St display will be unveiled at the end of this month, ahead of the store’s official Christmas launch on November 1.

Lisa Lubar, GM, visual merchandising, says this year’s visual treat followed a traditional Christmas theme.

“We’re confident it will appeal to a broad spectrum of customers of all ages. In particular this year, when the viewer approaches the window, not just looking in but gazing up, there will be another element or level of interest. I think that will intrigue a lot of the adults.”

She says the planning process took a minimum of six to nine months.

“We’ve gone with a different technique or concept this year, which was mostly inspired by an overseas trip last year. We did New York, London and Paris, but there was something very special about all the animated windows in Paris. When we realized what it was, we wanted to try a different approach, so we’re using a more traditional style of marionette puppetry.

“The company we employ has a full team. They have the engineers, animators, puppeteers, scenic artists, costumers, sculptors, carpenters, electricians and so on.

“The display is set up as a full operating module over a period of months. It gets transported in, disassembled and reassembled back into the windows all under cover.

“Our soft unveiling this year is Monday, the 30th of October,” Lubar says.

“The company we’ve employed specialises in puppetry globally. We were very fortunate to find the level of expertise and passion to turn our vision into a reality.”

“This is a gift to the people of Sydney. The younger children are the most delighted, but watching the morning foot traffic and the customer reaction is a joy for us.”

Encouraging that Christmas spirit is what makes the difference between a very profitable trading season or a disappointing one. Did you know that… your Shih Tzu puppy can be shown at an American Kennel Club sanctioned point show at the early age Of six months?

How to get started showing your Shih Tzu.

The forms to enter your Shih Tzu into point shows are mailed To you in a pamphlet called a premium list.

When your Shih Tzu puppy reaches the age six months your local kennel club can provide you with names and addresses of show-giving superintendents in your area. The premium list also includes the names of the judges for the Shih Tzu breed. There is a list of prizes and trophies, name and address of the show-giving club and where the show will be held. You should also receive the rules and regulations set up by the American Kennel Club which you must abide to before entering your Shih Tzu puppy.

There is a complete set of show rules and regulations that may be obtained by writing to the American Kennel Club, Inc., 51 Madison Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10010.

When you write the dog show superintendent, request your name be added to their mailing list. If you request only your premium list for the particular show you want to enter your Shih Tzu puppy, you will not receive premium lists in the future. List your breed as Shih Tzu and they will send you premium lists for Specialty shows also.

The point shows are unlike a match show.

In a match show your Shih Tzu will be judged on ring behavior. At the point shows your Shih Tzu will be judged on conformation to the breed Standard. The requirements are your Shih Tzu needs to be at least six months of age on the day of the show and your Shih Tzu must be a purebred. This means your Shih Tzu and your Shih Tzu’s parents are registered with the American Kennel Club. Female Shih Tzu cannot have been spayed. Male Shih Tzu must have both testicles in evidences. Any deviation from the Standard for the breed constitutes disqualification.

Allow your Shih Tzu relieve himself and groom your Shih Tzu to the best of your ability before taking him into the ring.

There is a specified area for grooming your Shih Tzu before taking him into the ring. This area is usually the show hall. Be sure to let your Shih Tzu out of the crate and exercise so the Shih Tzu can relieve himself before going into the ring. Many dog owners fear their Shih Tzu will get dirty if they let them out of the crate. Usually the first thing a Shih Tzu will do after being released from his crate is relieve himself. If you walk your Shih Tzu you can avoid this problem. If your dog is clean, well groomed, empty and leash trained you should be able to enter the show ring with confidence ready for an appraisal of your Shih Tzu by the judge.

Before you reach the point where you are actually in the ring awaiting the final decisions of each judge, you need to decide which of the five classes your Shih Tzu should compete.

The regular five classes of the AKC are: Puppy, Novice, Bred-byExhibitor, American-Bred and Open. If your Shih Tzu is undefeated in any of the regular classes, the Shih Tzu will be required to enter the Winners Class. If your Shih Tzu is placed second in the class to the Shih Tzu which won Winners Dog or Winners Bitch, hold the Shih Tzu in readiness for the judge to consider it for Reserve Winners.

If your Shih Tzu wins a class study the classes to make certain your Shih Tzu is entered in a proper class for his or her qualifications.

There are specific rules that must be followed if your Shih Tzu wins a class. No eligible Shih Tzu may be withheld from competition. It is not mandatory that you stay for group judging.
