Are you a movie dunce? Do you not know your Corleone from your Kurosawa? Would you recognise a lightsaber if it hit you in the face? Well, don’t panic. To help you catch up on your movie knowledge here’s the second instalment in your 2-part crash course in the top 10 movies of all time, as voted by the readers of the Internet Movie Database. 5. Casablanca

Hiding out in Casablanca, Morocco during World War II, exiled American and former freedom fighter Rick Blaine passes the time running a popular nightspot. Blaine’s tedium is interrupted when Czech Resistance leader Victor Laszlo arrives with his beautiful wife Ilsa — Blaine’s ex-lover.

Blaine holds the key to Laszlo’s safe passage out of the country, and Ilsa offers herself to him in exchange for her husband’s safety. Blaine faces the choice of sacrificing Laszlo to win back Ilsa, but in the end decides to do the honorable thing…

4. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

The third and final instalment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King offers an epic finale to Frodo’s quest (thousands of extras took part in the filming to add to the drama). Finally arriving at Mt. Doom, Frodo is overcome by exhaustion and the stress of bearing the Ring. Helped by Sam, Frodo manages to make his way into the volcano.

At the last moment he finds himself unable to throw the Ring into the magma, choosing instead to wear it. Gollum, surviving Frodo’s earlier attempt on his life, attacks Frodo and bites off his finger, removing the ring. Losing his grip, Gollum falls into the pit along with the Ring, breaking its hold over Frodo and killing Sauron.

With Sauron’s death his army is destroyed, just in time to save the army of Men, poised to fight to the death at the gates of Mordor.

3. The Godfather: Part II

Split between two timelines, the second instalment of The Godfather trilogy follows Don Vito Corleone through his adolescence in Sicily and New York during the early 20th Century, and later his rise to power as a Mafia Don. It also returns to a point a few years after the conclusion of the first movie, with Michael Corleone running the family interests following his father’s death.

After learning that his brother Fredo has betrayed the family, Michael must order his execution.

2. The Shawshank Redemption

Based on a novella by Steven King, The Shawshank Redemption tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a successful banker wrongly convicted for the murder of his wife and her lover. Given two life sentences, Dufresne is sent to the maximum security Shawshank Prison where he befriends Ellis Boyd Red Redding, a lifer who helps him adjust to prison life.

Over the next twenty years their friendship grows while Andy has a positive effect on the inmates, helping to establish a prison library and education system. Unfortunately, the mean-spirited and criminal warden beats down Andy’s spirit until he finally escapes through a tunnel that took him two decades to dig.

In a final act of revenge Andy exposes the warden’s crimes, driving him to suicide to avoid being sent to prison. Red is later released on parole, and tracks down Andy to a beach in Mexico.

1. The Godfather

Adapted from Mario Puzo’s seminal Mafia novel, the first instalment of The Godfather trilogy sees Don Vito Corleone, head of the Corleone crime family, struggle with the realities of a changing world. When he refuses to work with drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo in a scheme to push heroin in New York, he falls foul of Sollozzo’s backers the Tattaglia family.

When Vito is wounded in an attempted assassination his son Michael — previously determined to have nothing to do with the family business — volunteers to kill Sollozzo. Following the execution Michael is sent to Sicily to hide out until it is safe to return.

After Michael’s brother Sonny is executed by the rival Barzini family, Michael safely returns and takes his place as the head of the family in time to see Vito Corleone die of a heart attack. In revenge for the attacks on his family Michael arranges for the murder of the heads of the other families, to take place during the baptism ceremony of his nephew.

Following the baptism Michael orders the execution of the father of the baptised child — and his own brother in-law — Carlo Rizzi, in retribution for Carlo’s role in setting up Sonny’s death. The movie ends with the widow, Michael’s sister Connie, suspecting that Michael was involved in Carlo’s death.

Decisions, decisions! Here comes another election. You know it’s getting close when you get the sample ballot in the mail. And of course there are the signs in the yards, the newspaper ads, and direct mailings. Another indication that the election is near is the amount of TV and radio advertising and the intensity of the messages. More of the ads seem to be negative the closer to Election Day.

Those of you who are loyal to one party have no difficulty choosing which candidate to vote for in the election - it’s one party all the way. Other people may be more thoughtful in their choices. The pre-election polls refer to the other people as undecided.

And then there are the numerous propositions to consider. The County Recorder sends out a thick pamphlet with all the information you care or didn’t care to know about the proposition and the candidates. The sample ballot makes it easier by summarizing what a vote yes or no for a particular proposition would mean. Even some of the best sounding propositions are so poorly written that it may be best not to vote for them.

If you are someone who doesn’t vote and doesn’t care, or has firm loyalty to only one party, then this article is not for you, however, one way or another, the decisions that are made for candidates or propositions will affect you.

So how to do cut through the ads and media coverage to make the best decision? Getting information is a good first step. Some of the information that’s available may be biased to one view or another. Maybe…. it’s more likely the information is biased.

Most of the time I’d say you can trust your intuition or your gut feeling about a candidate or proposition. However the ads that are designed to appeal to the emotions can cloud your reasoning and intuition. So what do you do then? Who do you trust?

What if there was a quick method for asking questions so you could be happy with your voting selections? What if there was a way to determine the level of honesty of a candidate?

Yes, of course it’s only one vote per candidate or proposition and maybe your vote wasn’t or won’t be for the winning one. The important thing is for you to feel good about your voting.

Here’s one solution. You can use the ancient art of dowsing to find the best candidate for the office or to make the best choice for proposition voting. Why dowsing? Dowsing when done correctly enables you to find the truth about the candidates or propositions.

Here’s how you use dowsing appropriately. First you establish a connection with a higher power (be it God, higher self, spirit guides or angels). Then you learn how to use a pendulum, which is quick and easy. It’s simple to make one even with a piece of thread and paperclip.

Next you determine that the horizontal swing of the pendulum device would mean no and the vertical would mean yes. Also it is advisable to draw a simple chart that would show the percentage or on a scale of one to ten response. A simple chart can be drawn with a right angle or “L” shaped lines on a page and mark zero (0) at the top and ten (10) at the bottom. All the numbers in between zero to ten could be marked in hash marks.

Now it’s time to formulate some simple yes and no response questions. It’s always good to start out with test questions on answers you know to be true such as asking your own name or birth date. For example to get a yes response ask the question with the correct information (is my name Fred? if your name is Fred then you would get a yes response). And to get a no response you could ask if you are 10 ft tall or something like that (or something else you know to be false).

Here are some questions you can use for making voting decisions. Is this candidate the best choice for this office? On a scale of one to ten, one being the lowest and ten being the highest, what is the level of honesty of this candidate? What is the level of greed for this candidate? Is this media ad true about this candidate or proposition? What percent of this ad is true? For percentages you could make a similar chart to the one for a scale of one to ten or use a half circle marking the percentage increments by ten. (Hint - a protractor like the one’s you used in grade school are ideal for drawing a half circle.)

You can also ask questions about the propositions. Is the information in the summary on the sample ballot accurate? Would this proposition benefit me? Is the wording of this proposition clear and easy to interpret so if it does become law it will maintain the proposition’s intent?

In his book, Improve Your Life Through Dowsing, David Schultz explains his approach to using dowsing to select the best candidate and whether to vote for or against an issue. He had his High Self research from his criteria that included honesty, ethics, knowledge and a willingness to serve the public. He used his sample ballot and his pendulum to point to the name of the candidate that fit those criteria. He also relates that propositions can be confusing and uses his High Self research the pros and cons and whether the propositions are best for the people.

You could even experiment with predicting the outcome of the elections as suggested in Taming the Wild Pendulum by Dr. Tag Powell and Dr. Judith Powell. Their method involved writing the names of the candidates for one particular office on a small piece of paper and turned them over and mixing them up on a table. They then asked which one would become the next (president). They maintained their neutrality with using dowsing to determine the outcome and got it right.

Asking questions and using dowsing to find your answers is a powerful combination.

Everyone has heard local merchants read their own commercials on the radio. Perhaps they did it in order to give their spot an air of originality. More likely, they did it to save money. After all, they figure, anyone can read words into a microphone, right? Well, yes. Anyone can do that, just like anyone can make a meal. However, not everyone can do it with flair.

If all the only thing you need to do is fill some airtime, then an amateur voice may be all you need. Similarly, if all you need to do is get rid of some hunger pangs, then a bologna sandwich will suffice. But you don’t want to give a bologna sandwich to a potential client you’re trying to impress-so why would you want to give the audio equivalent to a bologna sandwich to potential customers?

When you purchase air time, you are not doing it to hear yourself talk: You’re doing it in order to convince potential customers to buy your product. Sounding anything less than professional is not going to help you do that. And giving the impression that you’re cheap, which using below-par voicing does, is going to give them the impression that you skimp elsewhere as well. If jewelry merchant puts substandard advertising out there for the world to see, how do I, as a potential customer, know that she doesn’t also put out substandard jewelry? Yes, people do make that connection, even if they don’t admit it. They may not even be conscious of it.

Now, consider this. There was the time several months ago when I retreated to the microwave, defeated, afraid my absent-mindedness would burn the house down (talk about repressed rage). In the last few weeks I’ve been trying the stove again - scheduling cooking time, staying put in the kitchen, turning on the timer, sharpening my attention, and not burning anything! I’m cured! I’m a cook! I’m not a menace, I can do this! And the ground turkey I cooked in the pan smelled very nice on my plate. And he says, alarm and accusation in his voice, Did you burn something?

No! I look up at him in shock.

It smells like you burned something. Something’s burned. and he walks into the kitchen.

No, no! I defend, going for the pan, picking it up to show him, feeling five years old and incompetent. It’s just nicely brown, see? I say forcefully, totally righteously. It’s his nose that’s wrong.

Well, it smells like something’s burned.

All of a sudden I get what I really feel. Yes, I’m five. I screw up my face and do big time mock crying and whining. But I didn’t burn it! I wail. I didn’t…. and I go all gooey, pan in my hand, miserable. And in that second, my husband does a 180. His eyes go deep and very blue-green, he smiles so fast I’m taken aback, and he comes towards me, arms around me, Ohhhhhhh, he says. And that’s the end of it.

So, how’s your day? he skips right to his next thought, and he’s standing right up against me, and we’re connected, and I leap from five-year-old to grownup, from lump to goddess. Long ago, whenever this happened, I used to think it was because he was competitive and didn’t want me to be big. I thought he liked me girly and the loser at chess and gin rummy. I thought he was scared of my fortitude. Now I know that’s not it at all.

He just likes me better soft. He likes me better where I am than where I wish I was. He likes me better human than mistake-proof. And by liking me better this way, he encourages me to rise to the ultimate test of any relationship: He inspires me to say that I like myself best when I’m with him.

When planning vacation and holiday getaways, don’t forget to plan for pet sitting. Consider using a pet sitter instead of a kennel. It allows your dog to stay in the comfort of their own home and helps the dog maintain a normal routine.

The best of friends, family, and kennels, cannot offer anything better than the comfort of a pet’s own home. Also, having a trusted pet sitter in your home can help protect your home from intruders.

Follow the 10 recommendations below to help you find the perfect pet sitter. Start looking well in advance of your vacation or holiday.

Personal Referrals. Ask trusted friends or family members if they can recommend a pet sitter they have used.

Set up a meeting in your home with each potential pet sitter. Watch how the sitter relates or interacts with your dog. Are they actively involved with the dog or are they distant or restrained around them? Does your dog want the pet sitter’s attention? If your dog and the person interviewed do not seem to click, keep interviewing until you find a good match.

A reliable and dedicated sitter will take notes for the details of your unique dog routines. They should ask you questions, and be concerned of trying to maintain the same routine as the dog has been use to. If they do not ask questions or take notes from you, keep interviewing.

A professional pet sitter should belong to an organization such as PSI (Pet Sitters International) or NAPPS (National Association of Professional Pet Sitters). However, remember these national organizations do not know these individuals or their reputation. Instead, ask for local affiliations and follow-up.

Ask for other client references. These will help you get a clearer idea of what to expect if you hire this person.

Bonding & Insurance. Bonding and insurance protects you in the case of damage or theft of your property. However, it does NOT ensure that the pet sitter is reliable, caring or trustworthy. These traits can often be determined from their former employers (references).

Ask for a copy of their contract. Carefully review the details. A contract will protect you and your dog. It will also spell out exactly what you can and cannot expect from the pet sitter. It should also list the appropriate rates for all services offered. Do not hesitate to ask questions!

Arrange another visit. Arrange for the pet sitter to spend some alone time with your dog. A walk is a great idea. Monitor your dog’s reaction. Is he happy and comfortable with the pet sitter? Or does he seem eager to get away from them? This also gives the pet sitter a chance to see if they can appropriately handle your dog (particularly if the dog is a large-breed, strong or very energetic).

Finally, go with your gut feeling! If it doesn’t “feel” right, it’s not! Keep looking.

Prepare detailed instructions for your pet sitter. Include your phone numbers of where you can be reached in the event of an emergency. You will also need to give your pet sitter the name and phone number of your vet.

Prepare in advance. Following these steps will ensure the best possible pet sitting experience.
