Why Artist Development Makes A Difference

Filed under: Uncategorized — koraysblog9150 at 10:04 pm on Thursday, July 31, 2008

Artist development in the music industry has evolved over time, leaving most of the early progress to the artist themselves. For the most part, the days are gone when a record label developed up and coming talent. The question continuously arises for those young artists, “where do I start”? With the advent of the Internet, the possibilities are mind boggling.

Many artists put in their mission statement, simply that they want a record deal, thinking that is all they need to succeed for career in music. Most don’t have a clue what it takes to get that deal, let alone maintain that career.

Artist development is a huge area overlooked by far too many artists and bands. Let’s explore the question, “What is artist development”?

A record label A&R rep once “discovered” fresh new faces in clubs, bars or word of mouth and would then support them, cultivate their creativeness, build up their fan base, and guide their direction with the intent of turning them into superstars. All of this of course, was with the intent of selling those 45’s, LPs, cassette’s and CDs. Gradually, many labels moved more into product development, which meant they are focused more on the immediacy of sales of the latest CD (product) released, and not bringing the artist up to that point. And more often than not, naive artists were at the labels mercy.

In this Internet age, it is more the artist or band themselves that must build the quality sound that is ready as a commercially viable product. On top of that, they need to have an already established fan base, basic music business skills, perhaps even the early music sales of a well produced CD. Labels are looking for pre-packaged, very talented musicians that are already showing their value.

A music career is a charted path to follow. Artist development involves all the issues surrounding and arising from that charted path, and crosses into knowledge of product development - the ultimate sale of the music.

Checklist on what artist and product development necessitate:

*Exceptional vocals, musicianship and/or songwriting skills

*Continued education and enhancement of musical skills

*Quality equipment

*Performance ability

*Image creation and maintenance

*Plan of action, goal setting

*Exceptional promotion materials, including photographs, press releases and artwork

*Business management skills

*Marketing, publicity, and promotion knowledge, online and offline

*Professional management

*Basic knowledge of recording, producing, engineering, and mastering

*Basic knowledge of manufacturing, distribution, and sales online, brick and mortar and air-play

*Good choices in members, staff and advisors

*Physical and mental preparedness

*Basic knowledge of finances, accounting

*Law and legal issues: publishing, copyrighting, trademarks, and an attorney

*Alternative career options - even athletes need to have other options!

Tending to all areas of your music career may make the difference between a one hit wonder and longevity in this business. It’s been said, “If you think this is a piece of cake, you better go bake one.” The music business, again, is a business. Businesses need to make money. That’s worth repeating - the music business is a BUSINESS. Take the time to find out all you can about each of these steps in your journey.

That being said, an up and coming artist must begin somewhere…and if a career in the music business is the goal, then any naivet? must be addressed immediately! Knowledge is power. Power gives you leverage. And who knows…that entrepreneurial artist may just find they don’t need that particular record deal after all.

Andy Warhol’s Cats & Dogs

Filed under: Uncategorized — koraysblog9150 at 6:46 am on Thursday, July 31, 2008

In 1954, Andy Warhol, a renowned cat lover, published a series of 25 cat portraits in book form. Printed on limited edition, hand-colored Arches watermarked paper, the prints were privately printed and made as a Christmas keepsake. He named his book 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy. He had originally meant it to read … Named Sam but his mother, who did the lettering, left off the d and Warhol thought that the final version was fine.

In the 1950s, Warhol bought a brownstone where he and his mother resided. And, although they had owned cats for twenty years, his series of cat portraits were not based on the cats he lived with and knew. Instead, they were based on the photographs of New York Cat Photographer Walter Chandoha.

In the 1970s, Warhol ’s interest with cats faded and his interest in dogs rose. His boyfriend decided they should get a short-haired Dachshund puppy. They named the dog Archie . Warhol became so enthralled with Archie that he became his alter ego. As he held Archie during interviews, when Warhol did not want to answer a particular question, he would simply deflect the questions to Archie. Warhol took the dog everywhere - to his studio, to art openings, to dinner, to photo shoots, and to London when his work took him there.

When Archie was almost three, another Dachshund came into the picture. This dog, they called Amos . The three of them got along famously. Amos and Archie would run around the townhouse barking, chasing and playing with one another while providing constant entertainment for Warhol. All was well, except now Archie would stay at home with his newfound friend Amos instead of gallivanting the city with Warhol.

In 1976, the art collector Peter Brant commissioned Andy Warhol to paint his Cocker Spaniel named Ginger. Andy made two paintings of Ginger, as well as drawings. Peter Brant liked these so much that he thought Warhol should do a whole series of cat and dog drawings. Andy liked the idea too. It would open up a new area of commission portraits and would give him a chance to use Archie and Amos in his work. All he lacked was a cat that would fit the modeling mold.

Warhol liked to work from photographs. He had a difficult time staging his pets and having them remain still. He decided to use stuffed animals for his first cat and dog photos. Vincent Fremont at Artnet called the finished paintings of these stuffed creatures spooky and macabre . The paintings; however, that Warhol completed from photographs of cats and dogs are said to be vibrant and infused with personality.

After some time he began dabbling in other arts, including underground films that explored the shock value of nudity, greed, and sexuality. In 1976, after his hiatus from regular, mainstream art pursuits, Peter Brant arranged for Warhol’s dog and cat series to be shown in New York and in London.

After Warhol’s period of drawing and painting cats and dogs, he started on artistic renditions for Campbell soup cans and his focus on pop-culture as seen in his works centered around Marilyn Monroe. After his mother’s death, Warhol became more distant from the public’s eye. Warhol left his diaries behind that were later published into a book. While many say his entries are mundane , those who study his art find that they leave a history - a post-modern history much reflective of his beliefs, ties to, and a life dedicated to explorative arts.

The Piano - Key, Hammer And String - Part 1

Filed under: Uncategorized — koraysblog9150 at 6:46 am on Thursday, July 31, 2008

The piano, while similar in some of its features too many other kinds of musical instruments, differs materially in several important points from all other kinds. It resembles the Violin, Harp, Guitar, Zither, Dulcimer, in its being stringed. It resembles the Drum, Triangle, Cymbals, Tambourine, Dulcimer, in its being dependent on percussion for the production of its tone; and it resembles the Organ, Clarinet, Concertina, in its being keyed.

But it differs from all of these instruments in the following important points. Firstly, in its being dependent on the player’s method of finger push on the key for its quality of tone. Secondly, in its being dependent on rapidity of finger push for its quantity of tone and thirdly, in its being dependent on keys for the means of producing percussion. The actual mechanism of percussion, namely, the hammers, being reachable only through the pressing of the keys.

It is probably from a want of appreciation of this last fact, that the piano has come to be considered rather as a keyed instrument than as a stringed one.

The distinctive feature of the piano is, then, the system of its key mechanism.

As the seat of tone, the wire, is made to sound only by a series of communication, starting with the key, it is therefore necessary to understand the method by which this communication is conducted and kept open.

The piano key is, basically, a lever that’s lifts the hammer that strikes the string. It is a lever of the first class, its fulcrum, or prop, lying between the power and the weight. In the case of the piano, this fulcrum, or centre on which the lever works, is placed about halfway between its two ends, the hammer (with some small intermediate mechanism) being the weight, and the finger the power acting on it. The very limited area should be noticed within which the action of the key is confined.

The immediate factor of tone is the hammer. The hammer, by means of intermediate mechanism, being in direct and close contact with the far end of the key, is raised when the near end is depressed by the finger or any weight; and the force with which the hammer is made to strike the string is in proportion to the speed brought to bear on the piano key by the finger at the moment of the push. Quantity of tone is thus the result of the amount of speed used in pushing the key down.

When the string has been struck by the hammer, the hammer falls back immediately, to allow the string to vibrate freely. This fallback of the hammer is, however, not a return to the position occupied by it before the stroke; it does not fall completely back until the key is allowed to rise. When the piano key rises, the hammer returns to its original position, and is ready for the next key push.

It is of great importance for the student to remember that the hammer is always at some distance from the wire. Except during the very short period of time spent in striking; that after having struck the wire it leaves it instantaneously to assume the half position described above; and that it is powerless to do any more work until after the key has been allowed to rise.

Children Sewing: The Hidden Benefits of Repeating Projects

Filed under: Uncategorized — koraysblog9150 at 4:33 am on Thursday, July 31, 2008

As I mentioned in one of the earlier articles, you should encourage your kids to repeat projects. Just by changing fabrics you are giving: variety, an opportunity to master skills, and the chance to practice visualizing the construction of the project. Repeating projects is also a great way to teach your kids to see things differently. Ask them, what can we change this time/or add, to give this project a special touch ?

My youngest automatically repeated every project she came up with. In order to help persuade my older daughter, I encouraged my girls from the beginning of our sewing journey to give some of their projects away.

Although the initial purpose was for the reasons above, over time it uncovered an INCREDIBLE BENEFIT!

The girls now have a desire to make all of their gifts, whether sewing or another craft. It is amazing the joy that comes from making your own gift by hand. The preparation is exciting - thinking about the person that will receive it, the care that goes into making it, and then the excitement of watching them open it (my girls’ own words)!

Through repeating projects we have gone beyond just creating for special occasions. The girls are using their skills as a ministry, to give gifts to others just because ; to brighten a persons day when they weren’t expecting anything.

As your working with your kids have them repeat projects. One, to master skills, but more importantly to encourage them to give. When you start this early, they learn the joys of blessing others, and the barrier of what I make may not be good enough to give away is also broken.

Start with friends and family. Move to neighbors, and people you come into contact within your community. This year my girls gave gifts to the ladies at the post office, the librarian, and a precious lady who works at the convenient store we go to regularly. The expressions on the people’s faces of shock and surprise were worth every second of their work. Then venture out and search for those in need.

Just today my oldest daughter found an organization that combines four of her loves: sewing, knitting, babies, and animals. The organization donates blankets, hats, and booties to hospitals for preemies, and toys for the animal shelters.

So encourage your kids to master the skills and experience the greater gift of giving.

It’s a Wonderful … Pet?

Filed under: Uncategorized — koraysblog9150 at 7:01 am on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Isn’t it funny how we don’t realize what we have until it’s gone. Like the parent who pushes the kids off to college only to suffer from empty nest syndrome a week later, or like the guy that sells his hot rod only to spend the rest of his life drooling at ever car show in town. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have someone show you in advanced the consequences of your actions or show you what the world would be should you never have been born?

Just think for a moment, it’s evening, you’re just getting home from work. You enter the house to be greeted by your family, but there is only one exception, there are no pets. No one ever thought to domesticate dogs, cats, fish, hamsters, and even snakes. So you say your hellos and then start to get ready for dinner. You’re then told how your son is having difficulties in school because he doesn’t communicate well with others. Mom and Dad were always working and without that pet to interact with he just kept to himself.

After dinner you sit in front of the television. You drape you arm over the side of the chair, but there’s no fur rubbing against your hand. No dog to curl up at your feet. No cat curling around your neck. Then the phone rings, it’s your sister. She’s calling you because she’s alone and needs someone to talk to, because she doesn’t have those fish, an African Grey, or that lovable French Bulldog to talk to. She tells you about her blind neighbor who needs to have someone guide her around.

The morning comes as scheduled so you get up grab your shower, eat breakfast, and you’re out the door. Wait, what’s this, no morning jog? But you need to get that body weight down. Oh, wait, there was no dog to walk to give you that extra push to get out and get moving. You then turn on the radio to hear reports of wild dogs terrorizing the public, and uncontrollable amounts of wild rabbits causing numbers of auto accidents.

Finally you come home for lunch. The house is empty. The silence is maddening, you could really use someone to talk to or curl up on your lap. But that would be silly, because animals don’t belong in doors, and animals are dangerous. As you sit there in your cold, quite house, you realize how truly alone you are. Then your silence is broken by the sound of your PDA chiming with a reminder that you need to see your Psychiatrist today. Hopefully he will find the root to your depression. As you walk out the door you think, “There must be something missing!” Suddenly you wake up to the feeling of a wet nose poking your face, a purring in your ear, and you breath a sigh of relief that it was only a nightmare.

How much would you miss pets if you sudden found yourself in a life with out them? Doesn’t it make sense to enjoy every minute we can with them? So today take some time and just think about what your life would be without your pets. If you don’t have a pet, just dialup your local shelter or rescue. Together we all can see to it that we never have to live a life without PETS!

Bill Clanton is Program Director and Co-Founder of All Pets Radio ( www.allpetsradio.com http://www.allpetsradio.com ), an online radio station for Pet Lovers and Pets alike. Having worked in broadcast radio for the past 15 years and always living around pets of all kinds, Bill felt that bringing these two loves together would be a perfect match.

Finger Foods Made Easy

Filed under: Uncategorized — koraysblog9150 at 7:00 am on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Each year a block party is organized and now it was our turn to be in charge of the event. This responsibility rotates from one home to the next in our small community. Our houses are stretched along a lake and the block party involves 12 homes. The host family is supposed to take care of the food and beverages. This year it was decided that finger foods were to be served at the block party. I found this idea appealing as by serving finger foods the host family could prepare all the food beforehand and would be able to enjoy this annual block party visiting with our neighbors.

I found quite many recipes for salty and sweet finger foods in my recipe books. As our annual block party starts at 3pm and end at about 7pm we had to provide food that was substantial enough to be considered a meal. Many children come to our parties as well, so we also had to provide foods that they would like.

My husband and I went to the supermarket a few days before the party and bought all the products we needed according to our recipes. There were breads for sandwiches and many cold cuts and cheeses. Other products we purchased were for dips, spreads and salsas which would enrich the selection of our finger foods.

We made the sandwiches and cut them in triangles and set them on trays. Apart from that, we put large plates of fresh vegetables with many dips around the gathering area. As far as sweet finger foods are concerned, I personally baked many cookies and bars several days before the event which I kept frozen until the day of the party. The special children finger foods were hot dogs and ice cream on a stick.

We used streamers and balloons for decorations for the block party. We also put some lawn chairs near the lake. Some of them were set up in the sun; others were put in the deep shade, so that any of our guests would feel comfortable. Everyone fancied the idea of moving from one place to another while having a bite in the afternoon.

This proved to be a brilliant idea because there was more time to visit as there was no set meal and people shouldn’t be gathered at the same time. The finger foods turned out to be a big hit and many guests said they would also serve finger foods when they host the annual block party.

After the party was over the cleaning up was very easy and fast. The food which was left was very little and easy to be stored. I believe my husband and I started a new tradition which will be continued on our annual block parties.

Sales Lessons From The Grocery Aisle!

Filed under: Uncategorized — koraysblog9150 at 7:00 am on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

The odds of going to the store for a loaf of bread and coming out with only a loaf are three billion to one. - Erma Bombeck

There are many things we all have in common and one of them is that we have ALL gone grocery shopping (definitely not one of my favorite tasks!)

Erma Bombeck was right.

When have you ever walked into the grocery store and bought…one banana???You may have had the best of intentions but as you were walking briskly to the till …SOMETHING ELSE caught your eye.? All of a sudden you remembered you needed Kleenex,? pasta, 2 lemons, Diet Coke, yogurt and the most recent edition of O magazine.?

Soon your little red basket is bulging, weighs about 15 pounds and your arm feels like it is going to fall off.?

I KNOW this has happened to you!?

Well - you have just been involved in the Grocery Store Sales Experience? and there are 3 lessons to be learned for your business!

1. Your Customer Needs To Be Reminded Of What You Have

Just as you sometimes forget to take a list to the grocery store - your customer forgets what YOU have to offer.? They can be so caught up in the day to day busy-ness that you are quickly forgotten.? You need to stay in front of them ..and OFTEN!?

* Are you seeding your customers with ideas through the mail?
* Asking them if their situation has changed?
* Providing them with useful info (like this e-zine) on a consistent basis?

2.? Your Customer Will Buy Other Products/Services If You Have Them

A grocery store doesn’t offer just one banana.

You are going to find it tough if you have only one product or service to sell. Why?? Your customer may not want, need or can’t afford that particular item or service.? They need some options! The key is that the options are relevant to them and also fit under the theme of what you do.

How can your customer sample what you provide? (There are some great tips about this in my book Tickled pink: The Secrets of Attracting Delightful Customers!)?

Remember - one of the fastest ways to grow your business is to have additional products and services that your customer can purchase.?? Once they love you - they will want to buy many things from you - what are you currently offering them?

3.? Package Products/Services Together For Maximum Impact

You’ve seen it.? A grocery display with a huge pile of strawberries - and right beside it…you guessed it…whipped cream, shortcake, chocolate sauce - all combined in one handy area.? You may initially have only been thinking about strawberries…but now you are drooling over the strawberry shortcake you will eat while watching CSI!

These 3 rules will help you to DRAMATICALLY? increase the average cost per sale - without adding a ton of work, energy and effort on your part!? More money - more fun - hey - it is the Diva Way!

Kim Duke, The Sales Diva, provides savvy, sassy sales training for women small biz owners and entrepreneurs. Kim works with clients internationally, showing them The Sales Diva secrets to success!

The internet is one of the many children of modern technology. To most individuals, the internet serves various benefits for them. Out of Jim Edwards’ Ten Commandments on making a web site, three factors seem to be extremely indispensable.

Establish a purpose.

Purpose is a desired result to achieve something wherein it is always kept in mind every time an action is performed. What is your website for? That should be your initial question. List all the possible answers you can come up with and segregate the important ones.

Make your own vision and mission. Let it be your guide in establishing your purpose why you have thought of creating a web site.

Create for your audience.

These days, people want to have user-friendly gadgets because it simplifies their life. Make a simple, user-friendly website wherein people will find it easy to navigate and learn more about what you want them to be familiar with.

Yes, you may be an expert but put your feet into your audience’s shoes so that you will know what their needs and wants are. Remember, the web site is not solely for you to view and utilize. Go back to what your purpose is.

Make Things Simple.

“Simplicity is beauty,” they say. This phrase will serve great help to you. Design your website in such a way that it draws attention and will make your visitors want to come back every so often. You can forget about flashy colors in your design which is distracting to the eyes. Choose a color scheme that is friendly to the eyesight.

Keep your pictures minimal. Select pictures which are extremely important to your audience.

Text-wise, always make it standard. Use appropriate types of fonts as well as font sizes. If you wish to deviate with the standard, make certain that it will be beneficial to your target market. Most importantly, make certain that the end result is good.

Purpose, being audience-sensitive, and simplicity are three factors which are exceptionally beneficial to keep your web site up and running.

The internet, it may be a product of modern technology yet the system itself can be kept trouble-free if the people running the system have a goal like Jim Edwards - to let people have a grasp of the many benefits of internet.
