Oriental, NC: A Quiet Coastal Town

July 31st, 2008

Oriental is a small town along the North Carolina coastline. With a population under 900 people it provides a very small town atmosphere where everyone knows everyone. This is great to bring friends and neighbors together.

The town was founded in the 1960’s and was built around fishing, farming, and harvesting trees. The town had a good advantage because the railroad had stopped in the town and they could bring in and ship out supplies using it.

The town still has a lot to do with the fishing industry. The fishermen will end up bringing in tons of shrimp and fish to be processed and sold. This helps support the town and give it a minor economy.

Even being such a small town there is still a lot to do in Oriental. The town revolves around its harbor and boats. There are currently around 2,700 boats in the town. This makes this one of the many small harbor towns along the east coast.

There is also a lot of art and galleries in oriental. There is an old theatre in town which holds plays put on by the Pamlico Music Society. It is also the main nesting ground of the Pelican Players. The “Old Theatre” is really the center for arts and culture for Oriental.

Several businesses in the town also offer bike rentals. Because of the sights and sounds of the ocean and the old town it can be very relaxing to take a peaceful ride around town and get some fresh air.

For the competitive person who wishes to move to Oriental you can get involved in the local sailing races. These races have been a part of the town for years and are more of a tradition than a sport.

Every guy enjoys fishing and that is a big thing in Oriental. Considering the town was built around fishing in its early days it should come as no surprise that people still enjoy it today. There are even guides who can be hired to show you the marshes around Oriental.

With everything said and done Oriental is a peaceful fishing village. It keeps a quiet lifestyle and would be great for anyone seeking for a place to live in and eventually retire to. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ocean view in Oriental North Carolina.

Lady Drivers Can Make Savings On Their Car Insurance

July 31st, 2008

Unfortunately your sex can make a huge difference to the amount of car insurance that you pay. Women drivers while having been the brunt of many jokes, particularity from male drivers, can in fact get cheaper car insurance than men.

Statistics have shown that women are indeed safer drivers than men, this is because women have been proven to make less claims than men do on their insurance. They also usually go for much less flashier cars than men choose, instead going for the more reserved and what is classed as the safer car.

There are many online companies now taking advantage of this fact and as such are offering deals specifically aimed at the women driver. Lady drivers can now search online for companies aimed at them and by doing so they can make huge savings on the amount of premiums they pay for car insurance.

However, there are other factors that determine how cheap you get your car insurance, regardless of your sex. The best, cheapest and quickest way to look for your car insurance is by doing so online. By looking online for your car insurance you are able to get instant quotes from many companies which ensures that you choose the cheapest deal possible.

Policy features and benefits and the cost of car insurance does vary from company to company and all policies have exclusions hidden within them so it is essential that you understand just what is included in the quote.

Other factors which are taken into account include the area in which you live. Depending on your postcode you can be charged a higher premium for your car insurance. While there isn’t much you can do to change this you can make sure you have the best security features installed on your car, by doing so you can help to reduce the premium.

Copy of Mediterranean Diet for Health Benefits

July 31st, 2008

There are about 16 countries which border the Mediterranean Sea, therefore, a copy of Mediterranean diet is not any one specific choice of foods. Remember amongst all these countries are many cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and religions within all the countries along the Mediterranean. The economy and the agriculture result in different versions that are the reasons why a copy of Mediterranean diet is not always the same.

A copy of Mediterranean diet is possible because a pattern exists in which certain characteristics avail. One of the concerns for a lot of us is how the American Heart Association perceives any diet that we may plan on following. The following is some examples of the things that are a part of the diet.

? The diet requires high consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, along with potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds.
? An important monounsaturated fat source is the olive oil used in the diet.
? The things we eat in a low to moderate amounts are dairy products, fish, and poultry as well as a little bit of red meats.
? Eggs may be eaten at least four times a week.
? The Mediterranean diet also permits a low to moderate use of wine.

It is up to each individual to put together a diet that you feel comfortable with. You should make a copy of Mediterranean-style diets and compare to diets that are recommended by the American Heart Association. The major difference you will find is this diet has a high percentage of calories from fats. The fact is that heart disease is lesser in the Mediterranean area than in the United States. The death rate is lower in the Mediterranean area as well. This factor is not all the diet but you must consider that in the Mediterranean area the lifestyle factors such as physical activity and extended social support systems play an important part.

In any diet certain things must be understood and compared to what we need. It is advisable to consult your physician and start reading the food labels whenever possible.

Understanding the differences in fats is essential when putting together a diet plan. A copy of Mediterranean diet shows that olive oil is used a lot but you may substitute canola oil if you are not use to using olive oil. The Greek copy of Mediterranean diet contains little of the two kinds of fat known to raise blood cholesterol levels. The two types are saturated fat and trans fat which is also called hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil. That is why it is very important that you read the ingredients on the labels. Recipes can be altered and it is advisable to do that. In case of fats use canola oil. If you are not a wine drinker or prefer not to drink wine then grape juice is highly recommended. Studies have shown that drinking grape juice has the same beneficial effect as drinking wine. The seeds of the grapes are powerful free radical quenchers. Remember when you do drink wine or grape juice does it in moderation. There are other things involved with the diet that can be substituted as well if necessary.

The copy of the Mediterranean diet the way you like it is a good way to loose weight but let us recommend to you that you exercise on a regular basis; drink at least 6 glasses of water a day and a moderate consumption of wine. We prefer that you drink grape juice as it provides the same heart health benefits as red wine without the concerns of alcohol.

Now let us look at a copy of Mediterranean diet itself and see how we might be able to utilize it for ourselves. One of the main components recommended to eat is lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It seems that red meat is not recommended rather substitute the red meat for fish or chicken. A cholesterol free product means that it is good for you because they are made with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. A copy of Mediterranean diet well followed is great for people who have heart disease. Now that we have checked out the diet we can put together a meal plan. I am going to put together a mock plan for one day. I do advise that you work out your plan according to your own food preferences.

A One Day Version of the Mediterranean Diet

* Half a Grapefruit
* Srambled eggs & steamed tomatos pinch of chilli or cracked pepper

The Power Of Getting A Health Care Degree Online

July 30th, 2008

One of the most popular programs for online education today is that of the health care degree online. What makes this degree so desirable one might wonder? The answer is as simple as two words, job market. The current state of affairs in the world of health care is one of major need for workers. With a booming health care industry, there is pressure on potential employees to earn a health care degree online, instead of going a more liberal arts affiliated route.

If this is something that doesn’t seem to make sense to you, simply have a look at your local paper’s classified ads section. Under the help wanted ads, there should be a large block of advertisements dedicated to the health care field. This is why health care degree online programs make so much sense for those looking to get a job. It is the simple fact that if you sign up for a health care degree online program, you can count on the chances of getting a job after graduation much more than most any other field offered online today.

The average health care professional earns close to double the average wage per capita in the United States, and has a career filled with helping others. Obtaining a health care degree online can be the difference between making something of yourself in the near future, and spending another bunch of years figuring it out. This is because most people after college go through seven to eight jobs before they find their career. This is not the case when you have a health care degree online, because most people that earn their health care degree online have the pick of the litter when it comes to job selection in the medical field.

Another benefit of earning a health care degree online is the upward opportunity to earn future degrees in nursing, or even becoming a doctor. There must be a foundation for every building, and if you look at your career as a building, the health care degree online is your foundation. This is the cement that allows you to build a better, stronger, future for yourself, and your family. Many nurses spend time after earning a two, or four year degree, before returning to get their masters in nursing. It is often the case that some will achieve such comfort in their health care job without this degree, that they never go back and thus the wide open market for nurses today. Having a health care degree online can make you a better, more prepared person for the future.

Not everyone is prepared to earn a health care degree online, and it should be considered a major challenge for anyone that is interested in earning this degree. Simply because the job market is ripe does not mean that earning a health care degree online is an easy task, in fact, this is one of the more challenging degrees online today.

Some people are gifted with a knack for science, most of us are not, and it takes extra dedication to make earning a health care degree online a reality. This means that you will probably need to study more than your peers in other programs, and often will be faced with scientifically challenging puzzles, that aren’t easy to solve. However, for those that are able to tough it out, and earn this degree, the world literally is awaiting their arrival. For the first time in history there are more jobs in this industry, than there are people to fill them, that is why earning a health care degree online is the right choice for anyone that is ready for a great career in the health care industry.

Acoustic or Electric Guitar - Which Is Best For The Beginner

July 30th, 2008

Having played the guitar for a number of years, I am often asked this question by eager learners - Should I start learning with the acoustic or electric guitar? In this article, I’ll talk a bit about both so you can come to an informed decision.

First of all, let me get something straight. The actual notes and fretboards work the same for both, so if you start with either one, its always interchangeable, although the playing techniques might differ.

Most younger players would gravitate towards the electric guitar thanks to MTV and the cool factor . The acoustic guitar seems to have a more folksy image to it. Both sound very different, with the acoustic relying purely on natural acoustic principles to generate the sound, using the body of the guitar as an amplifier . The electric guitar on the other hand needs an electric amplifier to generate sound. There are of course hybrids, but that is not relevent in this article.

So, which is better for the beginner? I’ll cover 3 aspects below - cost, convenience and playability.

Cost

Both are about the same, you can get really expensive custom built electric of acoustic guitars. However, the electric can start to get more expensive simply because of the tempting options and accessories like amplifiers, pre-amps, effects pedals, volume pedals, etc. The acoustic on the other hand might be simpler to start with. It plays right out of the box!

Convenience

Again the acoustic wins as you can take it almost everywhere without worrying about a power socket. There are personal practice gadgets available for the electric guitar which allows you to practice with headphones.

Playability

My personal preference here is the electric guitar. I find it easier to play, with the strings being softer and thus less effort to play.

Either way, they both should be respected and used for what they are and any good guitarist should be adept at both. For the beginner, I would prefer the acoustic as it helps a lot in ear training as you get accustomed to the vibrations of the body making the tuning of the strings are easier to detect.

My final piece of advice is to don’t get too obsessed with your instrument while you’re learning but focus on the music instead. Once you start to get better at it you’ll know instinctively what sort of ‘ax’ you’ll need. I’ve met my fair share of musicians who are so into the gear but have not improved in their skill much and on the other hand, have heard some amazing, soul-stirring music from blues masters that have played the same guitar all their life!

Al Tan tries to be a guitarist when he’s not building websites. One of the best resource to learn guitar online that he’s come across which has step-by-step guitar lessons on video is www.LearnMusicFrom.Us/Guitar http://www.LearnMusicFrom.Us/Guitar . Brain Development At Early Childhood With The Abacus

July 30th, 2008

Children have an amazing ability to learn, but their vast brain potential is not always nurtured to the fullest extent.

With the proper guidance and tools, children as young as 4 or 5 are capable of mastering mathematical skills and calculating ability that will yield benefits that last a lifetime.

“Learning Mathematics with the Abacus” is a set of books offering simple, enjoyable instructions for using the abacus, an ancient calculating device that provides modern children with valuable mental stimulation and proficiency in mathematics.

Scientific analyses indicate abacus training can improve a child’s ability to:

concentrate
visualize
memorize
observe, and
process information.

But how can it accomplish all that, and so much more?

Our brain has two hemispheres, the left brain and the right brain. About 95% of our children use only the left brain, which provides the ability to analyze information concerning languages and sound. But the right side of the brain, which is focused on thinking, creativity and integration of information, needs to be used and stimulated as well.

Learning to use the abacus can help develop this right brain/left brain integration.

When children use both hands to move abacus beads in arithmetic calculations, it stimulates cells in both the right and left sides of the brain. This results in quick, balanced whole brain development, leading to greater mental capacity. Using the abacus, a child can do all arithmetic calculations up to 10 digits without relying on an electronic calculator.

Nurtureminds publishes “Learning Mathematics with the Abacus” as well as abacus and mental arithmetic reference materials. We offer three books with simple step-by-step instructions that make learning the abacus enjoyable. Beginners use the Learning Mathematics with the Abacus Year 1 textbook and activity book to start adding and subtracting numbers up to 100. They begin by identifying the different parts of the abacus, holding and using it correctly, mastering the right fingering technique in moving the beads, and learning to visualize as they calculate.

The Learning Mathematics with the Abacus Year 2 textbook focuses on addition and subtraction of numbers up to 1,000, and develops addition and multiplication skills.

Our books have been used by tens of thousands of students in Malaysia and many other nations. They are regarded as the best abacus learning books for children on the market. Activities in these books have been carefully designed and structured by our panel of academicians, curriculum specialists and instructional designers to ensure that pupils not only learn mathematics effectively, but also develop the ability to perform mental calculations.

With these books, you can help your child achieve more than just math skills. You can boost your child’s confidence, provide a sense of achievement, promote intuitive thinking, enhance problem-solving capability, enhance creativity, and improve concentration and mental endurance.

Find out more on why our books are becoming increasingly popular in many countries like Malaysia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India, Singapore and elsewhere. They have become valuable teaching tools in schools, tuition centers and community centers, and are used by homeschooling parents around the world.

Dhaval Shrimankar is a private tutor based in Fairfax, VA. He owns www.nurtureminds.com/ http://www.nurtureminds.com/ and is committed to brain development in young child with mental arithmetic fundamentals.

The Power Of Supermarkets And Changing Attitudes?

July 29th, 2008

More and more concerns have been raised about the impact of the supermarket giants both on food production as well as on workers rights.

A recent report by War on Want and the British GMB, investigating the case of Wal-Mart (ASDA), shows how the relentless pursuit of supermarkets of the lowest possible prices has a negative impact on the supermarkets local communities as well as their suppliers, often based in the poorest countries of the world.

A few years ago, the supermarket retailer Safeway (now owned by Asda AKA Wal-mart) sent letters to their farmer suppliers asking for a contribution of ?20,000 per product line, in order to improve marketing of the products. They went on to invoice their suppliers for these sums. Supermarkets have tended to only do business with the largest scale suppliers at the lowest cost wherever they may be located. Next time you go to the supermarket take a closer look at the food labels, you will see New Zealand lamb and vegetables from Israel. But this is not what most shoppers would choose - when asked, they say they prefer British farm food. Supermarkets are moving towards this as many are now offering vegetable and meat box schemes stocked only with local and often organic food. Many small firms have spent years building organic box schemes and organic delivery into a viable business only for supermarkets to jump in on the act as it becomes more mainstream.

Britains supermarkets are damaging British business, are bad for consumers and bad for the environment. Farmers and consumers are paying the price of its uncontrolled expansion here and overseas. MPs must act now to curb the growing market power of supermarkets and ensure that Britains booming supermarket industry does not kill off farmers, consumer choice and the traditional British high street.

The UK Competition Commission has been called upon to look at the actions of supermarkets which many say are damaging almost everything that they touch.

Tesco controls nearly one third of the UK grocery market, setting the standard across the retail sector. But while the company boasts about its commitment to fair trade and corporate responsibility, a new report from Friends of the Earth shows that Tescos practices are putting many UK farmers out of business; while on the high street, some 2,000 independent stores went out of businesses in the last year alone, unable to compete with promotions and planning and taxation policies which favour the multiples over smaller shops.

One in five people think that supermarkets are most influential when planning decisions get made, over the council or local people. Often people cannot get obtain planning permission to build an extension yet the supermarkets are often granted permission to build huge stores the size of football stadiums

But, things are changing for the better-

Supermarkets are trialing having tractors deliver goods straight to the supermarket door to save on food miles.

Tesco are installing solar panels and using renewable energy in certain stores to show how green they are becoming.

Waitrose has started its own fair-trade scheme. The cash has been raised as part of the food retailers initiative to return a sizeable proportion of profits it earns on sales of citrus fruits to the farmers who grow them.

Ikea is to become the UKs first major retailer to regularly charge customers for plastic bags, to try and tackle waste and environmental damage.

The success of Marks & Spencers ethical marketing drive that urged shoppers to look behind the label has dwarfed all its previous advertising campaigns, according to research from a leading City brokerage.

Supermarket Sainsburys is to sell more than 500 of its own-brand products in compostable packs instead of plastic as it seeks to cut packaging waste. It says the scheme, already trialled on some of its organic range, will save 3,550 tonnes of plastic a year.

Is this a genuine change in attitudes by the supermarkets or merely a change in public relations direction to ensure they get all the green pounds that tend to be spent in local markets and shops? Ill let you decide.

Ten Amazing Brain Facts

July 29th, 2008

What part of you is only 1% to 3% of your body’s mass, yet uses 20% of all the oxygen you breathe? Your brain! Here are ten more brain facts.

- Your brain needs a continuous supply of oxygen. A 10 minute loss of oxygen will usually cause significant neural damage. Cold can lengthen this time, which is why cold-water drowning victims have been revived after as nuch as 40 minutes - without brain damage.

- Your brain uses a fifth of all your blood. It needs it to keep up with the heavy metabolic demands of its neurons. It needs not only the glucose that is delivered, but of course, the oxygen.

- Your brain feels no pain. There are no nerves that register pain within the brain itself. Because of this, neurosurgeons can probe the brain while a patient is conscious (what fun!). By doing this, they can use feedback from the patient to identify important regions, such as those used for speech, or visualization.

- The cerebellum is sometimes called the little brain, and weighs about 150 grams (a little over five ounces). Found at the lower back side of your brain, you need your cerebellum to maintain posture, to walk, and to perform any coordinated movements. It may also play a role in your sense of smell.

- The human brain weighs an average of a little over three pounds, or 1.4 kilograms. Albert Einstein’s brain may have been smaller than yours, because he was smaller than average. There is a general correlation between body size and the size of our brains.

- An elephant’s brain is huge - about six times as large as a human brain. However, in relation to body size, humans have the largest brain of all the animals, averaging about 2% of body weight. A cat’s brain? It weighs about one ounce, a little over 1% of body weight.

- There are about 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the brain. If they were stretched out (there’s a nice thought!) they would circle the earth more than four times.

- If you have an average sized brain, you have about 100 billion neurons up there. You’ll be happy about that after reading the next item.

- Approximately 85,000 neocortical neurons are lost each day in your brain. Fortunately, his goes unnoticed due to the built-in redundancies and the fact that even after three years this loss adds up to less than 1% of the total. Oh, and look at the next item.

- Recent research proves that your brain continues to produce new neurons throughout your life. It also proves that it does so in response to stimulation (do those brainpower exercises). Scientists refer to this as brain plasticity or neuro-plasticity. You may find this one the most encouraging of these brain facts.
