Internet Marketing As a Home-Based Business, Advantages And Possible Obstacles

June 30th, 2008

Nowadays more and more people are thinking about taking a step towards additional income and financial freedom. Business opportunities are countless for those who would like to start their own home-based business. That is why it makes it so difficult to decide what exactly you would like to do and how and where you would start.

Let’s talk about internet marketing as one of the great opportunities to work from home and make a part time or even a full time income for yourself and your family. As any other business, internet marketing has its advantages and possible problems you might face as a beginner.

If you don’t have your own product or service, you can sell other people’s products or services. There is plenty of companies on the internet that you can become an affiliate for. In affiliate marketing, you simply send traffic to an end merchant, and that merchant handles all the details of the sale and pays you a commission. The benefit of this is that it is comparatively easy for you. Affiliate marketers do not have to take credit cards, select product lines or handle customer service, they receive their commission just for building a site that generates traffic to the merchant. However, you should not think that none of your efforts will be involved in this process. You will need to create and be responsible for your own “advertising campaign” for each and every affiliate program you are a part of. This of course includes driving lots of traffic to your web site and using various media, not only internet alone, to advertise your product or service.

If you have your own product or service, it is even better — when you sell your own things you get 100% profits. The disadvantage is that you will have to handle the entire process of selling on your own, including inventory, payment, shipment, return policy etc. If your profit margin is high enough than it will be well worth all the hassle.

If you are not sure that you know enough about internet marketing you can educate yourself for free — read articles from free articles web sites, there is always plenty of advice there. Another good source of free advice is forums. Participate in popular marketing forums, and you can get lots of tips, ideas, advice — all for free. The disadvantage of self-education in marketing is that you have to spend a lot of time for that and always test, test and test new ideas and techniques. It may become a very time-consuming process.

If you do not want to spend so much time for self-education you can always find a marketing course, buy it and study. It is also possible to have a personal mentor or coach who would help you through the process. It will depend on your budget though, most of the personal coaches charge a very high fee for their consultations.

If you don’t like to work for someone else, you can be self-employed when you do internet marketing. You can set your own hours, be your own boss, make your own decisions. With all of that comes lots of responsibility as in any privately owned business. Decisions are yours and responsibility is all yours also. You should not be afraid of that and treat internet marketing just like any private business.

First of all, you need to decide for yourself if internet marketing is right for you. Think about it and make a list of benefits and problems you might face when you start doing it. If you like it, have passion for it and can be persistent enough you will have all chances for success.

Drawing What You Need Towards You

June 30th, 2008

I walked away with my tail between my legs. Sure, the error was all mine. I had a list of people I’d spoken to and one name was really obscure and neither Jo nor I knew who they were.

I sat down and thought about it. ‘Who are you?’ I asked. ‘Make yourself known to me again?’

With that I turned my attention to other matters. That’s when the phone rang and the person on the list revealed themselves to me.

Now if we want to be cynical we could say that the materialisation of that phone call was just coincidence - that this person just happened to call and remind me who they were. But what are the chances?

First, I just happened to have written the name badly on the list. Second, Jo just happened to spot my error. Third, we just happened to be discussing the person. Fourth, I just happened to ask for that person to make themselves known to me again. And it all just happened to happen, in the space of an hour.

What odds would you give on that happening?

This kind of thing happens to me too often for me to doubt that there is some greater connection going on between all our minds - a higher awareness.

How does it work?

First we ask for things. Second we have to be consciously aware of what’s happening to us. It’s important that we follow events as they unfold rather than letting our mind get in the way. It’s also important to do it with a sense of humour and to celebrate in some way when the universe provides.

As soon as our mind gets in the way we break the chain of events and distort what the universe is creating - often ending up with something we didn’t want.

When we put our attention on finding a solution or a person we are brought into connection with minds - sometimes people we know, sometimes people we didn’t know - who are prepared to answer our call for help.

These people have the will to help, if you have the will to let them in. What often occurs when our call is answered is a discussion to see if help is possible. Oddly, as a quirk of human nature, we sometimes repel people who come to help and either we reject them or they decide they just cannot help us.

While I know synchronicity happens, I’m in no way attached to it happening. I put out a call for things and get on with life. There is no hankering. I ask, then I read, jog, make phone calls or do whatever I have to do while staying open to what happens.

I think it’s fair to say that attachment to an outcome is the biggest block that can get in the way. The times in my life when I’ve had no money are the hardest times to create money. When I’ve been in pain, it’s hard to imagine no pain.

But each time I’ve asked for a person to show up who can guide me (that’s guide me - not do for me), they’ve shown up and helped me. From their life got better.

You’ll find some very simple tips below. Please take note, this is a very simple version I’m giving you because all our situations differ. This basic outline is however workable for us all.

1. Think of one think that you feel you life needs right now.

2. Be clear on what you want.

3. Write it down

4. See it happening in the mind.

5. Now go about your daily life, aware that answers will come to direct you.

6. Keep doubt out. Stay positive.

Love and good wishes

Betta Fish Care

June 30th, 2008

Betta is a popular tank fish and its maintenance is least painful. However, it does need care and you must be observant about its heath. A sick Betta is easy to spot since naturally the fish is very active and vibrant. If you have had the fish for a while you will be able to spot immediately when they are unwell.

Following tips can help you keep the Betta ecosystem healthy and vibrant:

1. A bowl large enough to allow ample swimming space is a prerequisite. The fish shouldn’t bump and tear its fins or scales. A large enough tank also ensures that the water has adequate oxygen level.

2. These fish do not require filtration but need the cleanest water you can provide them. Change the water every three days to keep it clean and avoid infection in your fish. The water you add to the tank should have set out for 24 hours (aged water).

3. Bettas are also called Siamese fighting fish because the male of the species will fight each other to death! Never put two males in the same tank. Females can stay together and so can one male with many females. You can also keep your Betta with algae eaters, guppies and corydorus catfish.

4. Ensure that the bottom of the bowl or tank is debris free. You can use something as simple as a turkey baster to do this cleaning. Debris sitting at the bottom will make the water cloudy and unhygienic for the fish. They will also cause the water to smell.

5. Maintain the tank pH at 7.

6. When cleaning the tank accessories, avoid using soap because traces of soap will change the water pH.

7. Betta can jump out of tanks and bowls, so keep them covered.

8. Betta is not a fussy fish and will happily eat the Betta pellets and frozen bloodworms. However, Bettas are fond of live food such as brine shrimp, and you must serve it as a treat now and then.

Vegetables - Health Food Or Killers

June 30th, 2008

With the recent outbreak of e-coli traced back to bagged spinach of all things, the FDA now suggests consumers thoroughly wash all bagged produce (including salad) before consuming it to avoid the extreme diarrhea e-coli bacterial can cause.

The e-coli bacteria can be found in any raw or undercooked foods. Most often outbreaks are linked to undercooked meat, or unsafe handling of raw meat, particularly ground beef. What was up until now less well known is that e-coli can also be found on fresh produce like fruits and vegetables.

E-coli bacteria cause severe diarrhea often with bloody stool and can cause kidney failure and possible death. The old and the young are particularly prone to extreme cases of the infection. If you suspect you have been infected with e-coli, contact your physician right away.

E-coli naturally occurs in the intestines of animals like cows and chickens. As these animals are slaughtered and processed, traces of the bacteria can come into contact with the meat. Ground beef seems to be especially prone to getting contaminated. To kill any e-coli (or other bacteria for that matter) that may have “snuck in”, cook all meat to an internal temperature of at least 160 F.

So, how does this same bacteria get into our salad, veggies and fruit? Manure is often used as a natural fertilizer and gets’ stuck on the outside of the vegetables and fruits as they grow and are harvested. Produce is cleaned off before it’s bagged and shipped to you, but that doesn’t necessarily mean all the bacteria are gone.

In particular vegetables including salad that are bagged provide a perfect growing environment for the e-coli bacteria. The bag ensures that there is always some moisture around the produce that allows the e-coli to multiply.

The recent outbreak of e-coli in bagged spinach along with previous outbreaks in bagged salad mixes and even containers of strawberries makes you wonder if we should just avoid all prepackaged and bagged produce. Fortunately we don’t have to go that far, but we should get in the habit of properly preparing those foods.

Salad and vegetables mixes in bags are often pre-washed and sold as “ready to serve”. Take a few minutes and rinse them with warm water, followed by a splash of cold water to avoid cooking the spinach or salad. Use plenty of warm water on hardier vegetables such as tomatoes or carrots and don’t forget to wash fruit with plenty of water as well, especially strawberries. Strawberries grow very low to the ground and are often fertilized with manure or are grown on soil that was previously fertilized that way. Since the berries grow practically directly on top of the soil, it is easy for the e-coli to catch a ride on the fruit directly into your home.

Washing raw fruit and vegetables with plenty of warm water should get rid of most of the bacteria, making it safe to eat. Make it a habit to wash your produce whether the packaging indicates it’s pre-washed or not. It will only take a few minutes and could prevent you from getting sick in the long run.

Using Cookware To Fight The Flab

June 30th, 2008

It may be true that obesity is caused by a number of different things, but it is correspondingly true that eating superfluous fat contributes to the condition. This is something parents of young children in particular have to watch carefully.

It’s generally true that children like fried food, because this manner of cooking slightly caramelizes the food by burning natural sugars. In short, it makes it taste sweet. Grilling, which can be less of a problem, has a similar consequence, and so too does roasting.

But the real felon where fat consumption is concerned is frying, because the food often has fat added to it, the main purpose of which is to prevent meat from sticking to the pan it’s cooking in. Oils such as olive and peanut may seem healthier than, say, butter, but they are still fats and should still be viewed with suspicion.

However, one effective way to avoid this problem is to use non-stick cooking pots and pans and leave out the extra fat altogether.

Unfortunately this sort of cookware has received some bad press recently, which suggested that there is a danger to pets associated with its use. There has been much supposition that the death of caged birds has been linked to toxic fumes given off from heated non-stick surfaces.

While there may be some truth in this, it’s important to understand that these criticisms are aimed at Teflon coated surfaces in particular. There are lots of other non-stick surfaces available which have not had this type of criticism levelled at them. In fact the use of this type of cooking surface has now become so universal, it has led to a new style of healthy home cooking using those fashionable double-sided grills.

These are great because during cooking any grease cooked out of the meat runs away into a separate tray, and of course no added fat is necessary to properly cook the food.

This means that low fat cuts of meat such as chicken and loin of lamb remain just that, relatively fat free. This is a big plus not just for those of us fighting obesity, but for anyone who cares about having a healthy diet.

It’s very easy to cook with these grills, and this in itself may well encourage people to eat more home cooked food and less bought-in takeaways. In addition, both fish and meat cook very quickly, further assisting the busy family cook with little time to spare.

If the healthy living assertions don’t convince you to at least try using non-stick pans, perhaps the budgetary ones will. Most non-stick cookware makes use of aluminium, making it much cheaper to buy than the stainless steel or cast iron equivalents.

And just to make life even easier, a simple rinse in warm, soapy water is all that is called for to keep non-stick surfaces clean. Even the most over-weight of us can surely manage that.

FAQ’s about Autoresponders - Part Two

June 30th, 2008

Still have questions about Autoresponders? Following are another set of frequently asked questions about Autoresponders. These answers may help you solve a problem or fine tune the way you use Autoresponders.

Autoresponder Question: Here’s my situation. I am changing the way I create my website so that I now use FrontPage. The Question is - Should I start creating a squeeze page before this transfer? If so, when a client signs up on my squeeze page where will their name and email go?

Answer: Yes, it is fine to create a squeeze page before the transfer. If a client subscribes to your list through your squeeze page then their name and email will go to your Autoresponder. Your Autoresponder is a separate program from your website. Therefore, the name and email will always go into your Autoresponder because it is linked to your hosting account.

Autoresponder Question: Here’s my situation. I use several squeeze pages, each of which has their own tracking tag. The question is - Do the client emails from all of these squeeze pages go into the same Autoresponder, but still keep their appropriate tracking tag?

Answer: Yes

Autoresponder Question: If you have several squeeze pages with unique tracking tags, will they all give the same thank you page in the Autoresponder?

Answer: Yes, unless you set up separate thank you pages for each tracked squeeze page. For example, you can have a thank you page that thanks somebody from coming from Google or Yahoo, etc. However, this can be very time consuming. It might be a lot easier to just have one thank you page that promotes you and your business. Does it really matter if you thank them for where they came from or just the fact that they are there?

Just thank them and move onto selling and promotion.

Autoresponder Question: Is the List-Opt website worth it? Does it work?

Answer: The List-Opt website has produced various results for different Internet businesses. Some Internet businesses have found success with it while others have had mediocre or poor results. You just have to try it out for yourself and see how it goes.

Ethical Advertising or Not? PART 2 from a South African Perspective

June 30th, 2008

In an article by Ted Lampert,President, Children Now Childhood obesity fueled by marketing tactics in the San Francisco Chronical April 27 2005.

Every day our children are bombarded with advertisements — quite often for products that are harmful to them. Each year, the average child sees about 40,000 commercials on television alone, according to communications professor Dale Kunkel of the University of Arizona; the majority of ads targeted at them are for candy, sugared cereal, soda and fast food.

While parents may actually be the ones paying the price for all of this advertising at the cash register, our children are paying with their health. In addition to the social stigma and psychological effects that overweight children often suffer, they are also significantly more likely than their peers to become afflicted with serious health problems such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. In fact, the U.S. Surgeon General has identified overweight and obesity as the fastest growing cause of disease and death in America.

Parents paying at the cash register is where the problem lies in my opinion, in my first article on this topic i stressed that the parents should take more responsibility. Kids are spoilt these days, given huge allowances and no action is taken to see where and how kids spend their money. Mommy I want , and the kid gets. Yes marketing is persuasive but i still feel that this type of marketing can only work if the parents are suckered into it. Sure kids will see the the funky adverts for sugar and spice and all things nice but are the real persuasive tactics used by the kids to convince parents to buy the advertised products. Advertising is not the biggest enemy, they should take some of the blame. Ultimately parents need to be the ones more strict.

My dad always said to me after giving me my small allowance, Son, get a purchase slip for everything you purchase . This way he could see what I was buying with my ‘washing the car cash’. If i could not produce a slip that money would be deducted from my next allowance. Running kids like a business made sure that i made the correct choices.

The protection of our kids is vital for the future of a country, making sure they are mentally and physically fit is of the utmost importance. The role of advertisers should be more controlled, no more advertising of less than desirable products during kids programs is a start. The rest has to be up to the parents, this is ultimately where the buck stops.

Ted Lampert wrote, Many advertisers prey upon childrens vulnerability by disguising their advertisements as online games or by using product placement to sneak them into prime-time shows. It is through television, computers and video games that perhaps the most insidious attempts to manipulate childrens eating habits occur. It is where food advertisers spend billions of dollars each year pushing unhealthy cereals, snacks and drinks through commercials and product placements aimed at children; where beloved cartoon characters shill for fast- food chains (such as Burger King’s use of Teletubbies and SpongeBob); and where advertisements for cookies and candy are disguised as arcade-style games. It is where broadcasters and advertisers put their own financial well-being above the health of our children.

I don’t mind my kids taking a liking to advertising tactics where Teletubies and SpongeBob is involved, they know that junk food only happens once a month. As young adults we lived our life on the wire all the time, but when my kids arrived the social responsibility towards them increased. Knowing the pitfalls of advertising, illegal use of drugs, alcohol and everything else that kids could come into contact with was high on ‘the 101 of raising kids agenda’.

The increase in product competition the world over will see more and more sly and subtle advertising tactics being used. I personally do not see it changing to any other way. Why should any product not sell if it openly states that it is bad for your health, as in the case of branding on cigarette packs, people still buy ’smokes’. The good thing about cigarette companies in South africa they are not allowed to openly sponsor events or place their adverts in any public advertising material.

Take an important decision about what your kids come into contact with and use your own subtle tactics to steer them on the right path. We, as parents have a social responsibility towards them, keep in mind that your kids these days might fall victim to more sinister things than unhealthy burgers sold by SpongeBoB and the rest of his gang.

The Benefits of Applying Online for a Credit Card

June 30th, 2008

The traditional approach of applying for credit cards through paper brochures has been replaced by a more efficient method: Applying Online.

Applying online for a credit card gives the consumer the advantage to compare offerings instantaneously. Whereas with a traditional brochure and unlike those pre-approved applications that annoyingly flood consumers’ mailboxes, applying online puts the consumer in the driver seat where they can dissect the perks and choose the card that best matches their needs.

With all of the various and distinctive offerings that credit card companies provide today, it’s most important for a consumer to choose a card that gives them the best purchasing power.

The new credit cards today are typically reward-based. However, not every credit card issuer provides the same rewards. If a consumer goes to a specific bank website, they will only be able to choose the cards that are issued by that bank.

To get the best credit card offerings, a consumer has to compare different credit cards from one central location.

To make the most of applying online, it is recommended that you take the following thoughts into consideration before applying:

1.) Decide what type of credit card you are looking for. Not all credit cards are the same today. There are reward credit cards, blink-enabled credit cards, business credit cards, retail cards, and prepaid credit cards, to name a few.

2.) Decide how you will use a credit card. Are you a frequent purchaser? If so, then look at reward-based credit cards. Are you planning on paying in full every month? If so, look for a credit card that has no annual fee.

3.) Do you travel a lot? There are many cards available that provide distinctive services - free of charge. Among other things, they include lost luggage coverage and auto rental insurance. Something to consider when choosing a card.

4.) Are you aware of your credit score? If you know that you have a fairly low credit score, then you can find comfort knowing that there are many solid secured credit cards available to help rebuild your credit.

5.) If you are a student, your best bet would typically apply online for a student credit card. These cards are specifically designed to look pass a typical student’s limited credit history while providing useful perks that could meet their collegiate needs.

Applying online for a credit card puts the consumer in an advantageous position. No longer are you obligated to wait for the best credit card offerings through the mail or take time-consuming trips to the bank. In most cases, you’ll even get an instant approval when applying online.

In a nutshell, applying online is faster, simpler, and gives the consumer more choices than was previously impossible before. Put yourself in the driver’s seat and apply online when you feel the need to get the best credit card.

All-new 2007 BMW X5 SAV: Third row option and many firsts for an SUV

June 30th, 2008

It will be BMW’s first ever car to be made available with the option of a third-row seating, to welcome up to seven passengers.

That’s the all-new, second-generation BMW X5 SUV, to be launched soon in Europe.

SUV or… SAV for Sports Activity Vehicle, as BMW called it since its launched its first generation in 1999, lifting its image - and specifications - above the more utilitarian attribute of Sports Utility Vehicles.

Selling more than 580,000 units of the first X5 generation was a respectable figure for a luxury priced SUV, considering in particular that it was the first step for the Bavarian brand into the SUV market as such. Having well over half a million people trust the brand with its first step in SUV land, especially in the elitist premium price brackets, can be safely qualified as an achievement.

The all-new X5 will be available then in standard 5- or optional 7-passenger configurations, and in any case, with more power, lower emissions, better fuel consumption, an all-new six-speed automatic gearbox and several new technologies in the segment such as the head-up display, run-flat tyres, adaptive drive suspension management.

Back in 1999, t he first generation BMW X5 was the first SUV-type vehicle to offer a genuinely sporty car-like drive, thanks to its crossover structure with a unitary body construction rather than a traditional truck-like body-on-frame architecture.

Hence the German automaker Sports Activity Vehicle phrase to underline its dynamic attributes over the rather utilitarian construction of many traditional SUVs.

Seven years after its 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show debut, the all-new X5 mission will be to reconfirm, once again, its premium status with a new list of firsts for its category. The Bavarian carmaker describes it new X5 as the world’s first SAV (OK, we’ll read it as crossover SUV) to be offered with Head-up Display, an active suspension system - BMW’s adaptive drive package, active steering and run-flat tyres.

For a brand often described as the ultimate driving machine, description starts from… the engines, naturally. And the new BMW X5 is powered by the latest, most advanced engines.

A choice of three units will offered at launch, two petrol and one diesel, all of which feature increased power compared to the engines in the outgoing model, while also posting more economical consumption figures and reduced emissions.

In the UK, the biggest seller is expected to be a 2,993cc six-cylinder diesel but, for those preferring petrol power, the X5 can also be specified with a 2,996cc six-cylinder or a 4,799cc V8 engine.

Starting from the most frugal between the three choices, the BMW X5 3.0d uses a diesel engine with high-precision piezo crystal injection technology for better economy and emission figures. This advanced technology, combined with the introduction of an all aluminium crankcase that saves 25kgs in weight compared to the former 3.0-litre diesel engine, sees the new X5 record improved performance figures. It is now seven per cent more fuel efficient with a combined fuel consumption figure of 32.5 UK mpg (27.08 US mpg), or 8.69 litres per 100 km, while also emitting eight per cent less CO2. The 3.0d engine records 231g/km.

Although more economical, the new BMW X5 3.0d comes with increased power. Output is 231hp, up six per cent compared to the previous model, and maximum torque is 520 Nm, up four per cent. Peak torque is available from 2,000 to 2 ,750 rpm offering near swift yet refined motoring, powering the BMW X5 3.0d from zero to 62mph (100 km/h) in 8.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 134 mph (215 km/h), or 130 mph (209 km/h) for the non-Dynamic Package equipped model.

Based on the world’s lightest production inline six-cylinder petrol engine, the BMW X5 3.0si comes equipped with BMW’s Double Vanos and Valvetronic variable valve technologies for high performance, yet economical motoring. In simple terms, Double Vanos determines when the engine’s valves open (timing), while Valvetronic determines by how much they should open (lift).

The net effect of both systems is that the engine is operating constantly at its optimum efficiency with only the exact amount of fuel needed being used. Hence, the X5 3.0si has a combined fuel consumption of 25.9 UK mpg (21.58 US mpg), or 10.9 litres per100 km, an 18 per cent improvement compared to the previous X5 3.0i, and an emissions figure of 260g/km.

Developing 272hp at 6,650rpm, the engine peak torque of 315 Nm is reached at 2,750rpm, with zero to 62mph dispatched in 8.1 seconds. Top speed for the new BMW X5 3.0si is 140mph (225 km/h) when fitted with the Dynamic Package, or 130mph (210 km/h) without it.

With its 355hp engine, the BMW X5 4.8i is the flagship of the range. It is faster from zero to 62mph and has a higher top speed than the supercharged Range Rover Sport or a Mercedes Benz ML500 Sport. The 4,799cc V8 powers the X5 4.8i to 62mph in 6.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 150mph (241 km/h), when fitted with the Dynamic Package. With this performance, fuel consumption is 22.6 UK mpg (18.83 US mpg), or 12.5 litres / 100 km on the combined cycle and emissions are 299g/km.

The new BMW X5 comes with an all-new faster-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. It features a new torque converter with enhanced software resulting in gearshift times up to 50 per cent quicker than the previous automatic gearbox.

A new design of gearstick also creates more space on the centre console for additional storage space and cupholders, while the use of an electronic parking brake (EPB) in place of a conventional handbrake aids ergonomics further.

The BMW X5 intelligent xDrive four-wheel-drive system transfers power between front and rear wheels depending on available grip for optimum handling, and it can now be specified with Adaptive Drive and Active Steering - two advanced systems never offered before on a BMW X model.

Adaptive Drive uses active hydraulic anti-roll bars to counteract the cornering forces of the car to keep the body from leaning too heavily and unsettling the occupants. In addition, the system incorporates an Electronic Damper Control system that uses sensors to continuously adjust the damper setting for the optimum comfort.

Active Steering - To make parking effortless at slow speeds, active steering uses an electronically operated planetary gear intersecting the steering shaft to add more lock than inputted by the driver. Steering becomes more direct. When driving at speed, the opposite occurs for a smoother, more composed ride.

The new BMW X5 can be optionally specified with Head-up Display - a first for its category. For enhanced safety, the system projects speed, navigation and check control messages into the line of sight of the driver who can keep his /her eyes on the road ahead while still being made aware of important instructions.

Another safety benefit comes from the standard fitting (UK specs) of run-flat tyres - again a first for an SAV or SUV. Run-flat tyres allow a driver to continue the journey in the event of a puncture for up to 90 miles (145 km) at speeds of 50mph (80 km/h).

Run-flat tyres also provide the best stability in the event of a blowout.

The BMW X5 comes fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels and run-flat tyres as standard with optional 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels offered.

With the latest in traction control technology, Dynamic Stability Control+, comes also standard (UK specs), with four unique functions for added safety and comfort:

- Brake Pre-tensioning shortens stopping distances during an emergency stop by priming the brakes should it detect the driver lifting off the accelerator sharply in reaction to an incident ahead.

- Brake Drying improves braking performance in the wet by periodically applying the brake pads to scrub away the film of water that can build up on the brake discs.

- Hill Start Assistant allows a car to pull away smoothly on a steep gradient without rolling backwards, courtesy of the brakes being held for the short time it takes the driver to apply the accelerator after releasing the foot or handbrake.

- Brake Fade Compensation applies additional braking without any extra effort from the driver should sensors detect that the brake pads are starting to lose ‘bite’ due to heat build up.

With the new X5, the driver will also be able to select the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function of DSC+. DTC allows for a greater degree of wheel slip for more spirited driving without the main traction control system safety net intervening. This option can be selected via a button on the centre console.

In a first for a BMW, the new X5 can be specified with an optional third row of seats allowing up to seven occupants to be transported in comfort. An increase of 19cms in overall body length and an increase in body width of 6cms, combined with innovative design, has made it possible to introduce a brace of seats in the rear, while still retaining luggage space.

With all seven seats in place, there is 200 litres of boot space (half the average of a family car boot / trunk volume). The two extra seats, complete with three-point seat belts and head restraints, are stowed under the boot floor when not in use. BMW X5 owners who do not specify the third row of seats benefit instead from an additional 90-litre storage compartment situated below the boot floor.

In a standard five-seat configuration the boot measures 620 litres - up 155 litres (33.33%) compared to the outgoing X5. For sizeable objects, luggage capacity increases to 1,750 litres with all the rear seats stowed - a figure greater than that of any other BMW.

While being one of the most practical cars BMW has ever made, the new X5 still has, as expected from the brand, with its premium prices too, a luxurious interior feel and a dynamic and sporty exterior shape.

A drag coefficient as low as 0.33 places the BMW X5 at the top of its segment as the most aerodynamically efficient large SUV. This low figure is partly achieved by a rear tailgate that incorporates a roof spoiler and a near flat underbody to aid airflow.

In the UK, nine exterior colours will be offered initially (from next spring) alongside four levels of trim and seven upholstery colours.

BMW’s iDrive control system also comes to the X5 for the first time. A new ‘wave’ style of dashboard houses the colour display while the iDrive controller sits on the centre console adjacent to the new style of gear selector. The controller is complemented by eight buttons integrated as system short cuts for ease of use.

Supplementing the standard fit front and rear Park Distance Control , X5 customers can optionally order a rear camera for added parking convenience. Automatically activated when the reverse gear is selected, the driver is presented with a wide-angle colour image on the iDrive display in the centre console.
