La Vie en Rose: The Transformation of Edith Piaf

April 30th, 2008

I have been a fan of Edith Piaf’s for many years. Among her esoteric US following was the basketball team at my college, which used to warm up to her song, “Milord.” I was also a student of French, and learned to sing along with many of her songs. Even though I knew nothing of her life, and no one off my college campus had ever heard of her, her singing was inspirational to me at the gut level. It is something in the voice itself.

The story of Edith Piaf’s life, told in the movie “La Vie en Rose,” is so turbulent and full of tragedy and success that it lends itself to mythologizing, though that isn’t necessary. The verifiable facts are enough. With parents who were a street singer (mother) and a circus performer and/or street-performing contortionist (father), both likely alcoholics, Edith was born in the streets of Paris (or thereabouts). She was then tossed from parent to grandparent and back again throughout her childhood. She was blind for several years as a child and possibly deaf for a period of time later on, she spent several years living in the brothel her grandmother ran, and her only child, born to her when was but a teenager, died before the age of 2.

How did Edith Piaf survive this life which always seemed to be now-you-can-see, now-you can’t, much less become an international superstar, icon for France, and personification to many of the sheer will to survive?

Among the many scenes that captured me in the movie, were the scenes with her coach, perhaps because I’m a personal life coach. Raymond Asso basically turned her from a street singer into an international super star in the way that coaches work - recognizing the raw talent, seeing what needed to be done, giving feedback and motivation, and most of all sticking with the client as they do the work which quite often includes the phrase “I can’t.”

First he realized she needed a name change. Edith Gassion was not going to work. He suggested “Piaf” which meant little sparrow, fitting because Edith Piaf was only 4′8″ tall.

Next he told her she needed to articulate and taught her how to spit the words out in a way that one critic describes as “an any note could be the last sort of conviction”. When she turns to the orchestra (in the movie) and tells them to play “Padam” you hear this. Padam … Padam … Padam… ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=R85LXfkdcWA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R85LXfkdcWA ) When he told her to articulate, she said she could not sing that way, at which he gave her motivation. “Do what I say,” he told her, “or go back to the gutter.”

Motivation, however, we coaches know, is only temporary. What it boils down to is determination, and having someone join you in the difficult journey is often the key to success. In the movie, we watch them working together for hours and hours and he encourages her when she becomes negative, tired, or both. What a coach!

Raymond Asso also noticed the natural beauty of her hands, and taught her how to use them when she sang. If you watch the video of “Hymne a L’Amour” ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjR5xFZxZK8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjR5xFZxZK8 ) you will see the incredible quality this brings to her performances. Her coach also wrote “Mon Legionnaire,” the song said to have made her a star.

Essentially what her coach did was develop the raw talent, so the lump of coal could become a diamond, true to its nature, but refined and polished. Edith Piaf said she learned everything from her coach about how to sing and perform.

Other life events intruded, one more painful than the next. The movie makes it clear that what kept Edith Piaf going was being able to sing on stage, before an audience. “Life without singing did not interest me,” she said. The voice and natural talent were given to her, but it is entirely likely that without the expert guidance and support of her coach, she would have remained singing “in the gutter,” without the audience she desired, and none of us would have had the opportunity to hear this truly unique singer.

Hymne a L’Amour, by the way, was voted the #4 most beautiful French song ever written. It is about Marcel Cerdon, the boxer, who was the great love of Edith Piaf’s life. She recorded it early in 1949, and Marcel Cerdon died in a plane crash in October of that year. While the song defies literal translation, the cover in the US is called “If You Love Me (Really Love Me), and the last line is “God reunites those who love each other.”

Very Clever Mozart: For not having Mohammed’s head in the original production of Idomeneo

April 30th, 2008

As all the world now knows, Berlin’s Deutsche Oper closed a production of Mozart’s perennially harmless opera Idomeneo, because of “incalculable risk” due to a threat from a Muslim group or individual over the director’s decision to include a scene in which the heads of Mohammed, Jesus, and Budda are presented without their accompanying bodies.

The heady scene is reportedly an effort on the part of the director to mix opera with his own anti-religious sentiments.

While Mozart was not above being a bit of a rabble rouser - note the antagonism he bestirred among the nobility due to the amorous ways and eventual comeuppance of the broadly ignoble Don Giovanni - we give him the belated accolade of Clever Monkey of the Week for not finding if necessary to present disembodied prophets in the original production.

The oper avowed that it shut down the production “with great regret,” but government officials other than the security forces were not pleased.

As the mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, said, with all understanding for the concern about the security of spectators and performers, I consider the decision of the director to be wrong. Our ideas about openness, tolerance and freedom must be lived on the offensive. Voluntary self-limitation gives those who fight against our values a confirmation in advance that we will not stand behind them.

There was a redemptive bright spot on the Islamic horizon. Kenan Kilat, who is the leader of Germany’s Turkish Community, told the online newspaper Netzeitung that, while he could understand how the three-headed scene could offend Muslims, an opera is not a political forum.

He went on to say the nearly miraculous, I would recommend Muslims learn to accept certain things. Art must remain free.

We commend his wisdom and courage.

But evidently we still have an enormous cultural chasm to deal with. Imagine how far we are from the headline “Famous Muslim Opera Closed Due To Courtesy Toward Christians.”

Unsecured Loans UK: a fast way to borrow collateral-free money

April 30th, 2008

The present day society is inclusive of a big population of people who may or may not be having any assets to their name. This has made the lenders in the UK aware of the fact that opportunities should be provided to both sections equally. Loans for people unwilling to pledge assets are available and are called unsecured loans UK.

Through unsecured loans UK, the borrowers can borrow money to use for any of their personal requirements like debt consolidation, home improvement, wedding expenses, college fee etc.

Unsecured loans UK can be borrowed by people who do not have any assets to pledge. They include tenants, non-homeowners and the people who are living with their parents and do not own any house of their own. Homeowners who do not want to pledge collateral can also avail unsecured loans UK

Unsecured loans UK are approved by the lenders after some basic requirements have been fulfilled. Since no collateral is involved, the lender also has to make sure about the credentials of the borrower. The requirements are:

?Regular employment

?Regular monthly cash inflow

?Residential proof

?Age proof of over 18 years.

The borrowers can take up unsecured loans UK in the range of ?1000-?25000 which has to be repaid in a term of 6 months to 10 years. the rate of interest charged is high so the borrower is required to put in some effort and research before finalizing a deal so that the lowest rates possible are obtained. Unsecured loans UK are approved very fast as there is no asset check required for the loan.

Bad credit borrowers can also borrow unsecured loans UK but they are charged a higher rate of interest. To lower this rate, he needs to prove a good repayment capacity to the lender by showing his bank transactions. Once the lender is convinced, then the borrower will face no problems in getting the loan approved.

Unsecured loans UK are a great opportunity for people who do not want to pledge collateral for a loan and maximum benefit should be obtained from this chance.

eBay Affiliate Program

April 30th, 2008

Learning about the eBay affiliate program and how it functions within eBay can be time well spent toward developing an effective affiliate program.

Did you know that eBay has an affiliate program? This is sometimes overshadowed by the sheer size of eBay, but you can make affiliate income from eBay.

Here is how it works. Go to the affiliates.ebay.com http://affiliates.ebay.com and sign up. This will direct you to Commission Junction (www.cj.com) which handles the commissions for eBay. You should spend time on Commission Junction after you join to see all the other affiliate programs that you can join as well as eBay. You will be amazed at all the affiliate programs that are available on Commission Junction.

You will notice that you can become an affiliate of eBay in several countries. If you speak the language of another country, you can become an affiliate of that country if you desire. I am an affiliate of eBay USA, Italy, France, UK, Canada, and India. I am not active except in the US and Italy. Italy you say! No, I do not speak Italian, but I found an Italian translator through elance.com who helps me with my Google Adwords ads that drive traffic to eBay Italy. When they join and buy, I receive my commissions in US dollars through Commission Junction.

If you refer a person to eBay who is not a member and they join and purchase an item, you get referral fees and a commission on the sale. eBay recently increased its fees. These fees changes will help the smaller affiliates make more money at lower transaction volumes.

Currently, the initial fee for causing someone to join eBay is $12.00. Under the old structure, this covered the first 499 people. Then the fee rose to $16.00 each over 499.

The new structure still pays $12.00 for the first tier, but the tier is for 1 - 49. At 50 - 499 the fee is $16.00. This structure is much more favorable for the little guy.

To understand how this all works, go to eBay and study it. The fee structure is located at affiliates.ebay.com/revshare http://affiliates.ebay.com/revshare .

Learn about the eBay affiliate program and other affiliate programs on the Net. Affiliate programs when used correctly can make you money without having to monitor them constantly.

Good luck as an affiliate of eBay.

There are a lot of places from where you can find the perfect air hockey table for you and your family. It is a highly enjoyable family game, air hockey, which makes it utterly irresistible when it comes to entertaining your kids. Children really enjoy playing air hockey, and this makes the perfect present for just about any kid. The great thing about air hockey tables is that they can be played by even the eldest members of the family. This makes the game really interesting, and it can also achieve its main purposes, to unite all the family members and entertain everyone.

You can find a lot of air hockey tables on sale around Christmas and other major holidays. Every dealer will tell you that they are highly in demand during holiday times. Air hockey tables can give you the sheer satisfaction of uniting with your loved ones.

Family games are really liked by many people. Air hockey tables, ping pong tables, puzzles, they all unite the family members and make for the better relationships. Playing together is a source of great fun and many people like to express their feelings by means of family play.

But, like most forms of entertainment, air hockey tables can be replaced by something new. You cannot spend decades playing one game, and as your children gradually grow older they need other forms of entertainment. That’s why air hockey tables are replaced by other games, such as table tennis, billiards and so on.

But table games themselves will never be replaced by anything else, no matter what kind of game you prefer. The table has a magical attraction to it and unites all people together and to make them part of the big game. That is what makes them utterly irresistible among families.

Filling Your Child’s Need For Fluids

April 30th, 2008

Water is classified as a nutrient because it is essential to life.Water is 100 per cent fluid, which quenches your child’s thirst -without adding sugar or calories. In other words, it won’t spoil her appetite for meals. Schedule water breaks every 30 minutes or so to make sure your child gets enough. However, it is not a source of energy like fats and carbohydrates, nor does it build or repair body tissues, as does protein. Instead it functions primarily as a solvent and transport vehicle for nutrients, wastes and body substances.

Milk is also a top-notch fluid because it provides calcium, protein and B vitamin riboflavln. Small children should drink about two glasses of milk in a day. You can supplement your child’s diet with milk products like curd, cheese, milk shakes and so on.

Juice is an acceptable drink that usually offers vitamins such as vitamin C. It is known to have high nutritive value and is extremely beneficial, as it is rich in sugar and thus high in calories. Juice has an abundance of vitamins and minerals, which are excellent for your child. Some children are fussy fruit eaters so juice is a good way to add fruits to their diet. But care should be taken to ensure absolute cleanliness and hygiene while making the juice. The utensils and the juicer used should be clean and free of any sort of germs.

Aerated drinks contain empty calories, and don’t offer the nutrition of milk or juice. They don’t provide the body with any sort of vitamins or protein. Furthermore, the carbonation can fill up your child so that he won’t drink or eat as much as he needs to. And some of these drinks may contain caffeine, which is likely to make most children restless and uneasy. They may cause bronchitis, too, in some children who are allergic to them. While it may not be possible to ban aerated drinks entirely, their intake could be limited.

Sources of water

Juices, drinks and other beverages contain large amounts of water too, as do fruits, vegetables and other foods. Foods that appear dry like cereals, bread and meats also have a certain amount of moisture in them. The metabolic breakdown of food for energy yields water as one of its products. The water balance in a healthy adult follows a certain ratio of intake and loss.

5 Ways To Increase Your Affiliate Sales

April 30th, 2008

There are certain ways of doing anything. When it comes to affiliate marketing in particular, you can choose to do it half-heartedly or you can go all-out and do it right. Work your affiliate programs by slamming a ton of banners on a page and waiting for the money to roll in is both a waste of your time and a disservice to the affiliate program owner you’re working for. You may as well not even do it.

Work your affiliate programs like they actually mean something to you and your business; with all your knowledge and effort, and you’re going to be on the road to collecting a good deal of commissions. Just like anything, there are ways of doing things that are going to prove to your web site or blog visitors that you are an expert at what you’re taking about. Use your expertise about the product you’re promoting and speak to them as a friend. After all, PRE-Selling a product is nothing more than being able to articulate how wonderful something is to someone else, as one trusted friend to another. It’s not a hard thing to learn, but is a skill you must master that is not being taught as widely as it needs to be. People want to be able to trust others. Cynicism runs rampant in the Internet marketing world. There are far too many scammers out there making us good guys look bad. You primary job is to be that one voice crying out in the wilderness that changes that cynicism to trust. It’s about being real and not a salesman. People can smell a salesman a mile away and they stink.

Here are 5 ways to work your affiliate marketing programs as an expert:

1. PRE-Sell - Find your own voice. Don’t write like everyone else. You do not want to come off as just another carbon-copy salesman. You need to convey to your visitors that you care about them (it helps if you do). You need to have a passion to truly help other people. That can be understood in how you write. Sincerity is a trait sorely lacking in Internet marketing. You need to learn the mandatory skill of writing to PRE-Sell. Your job is to PRE-Sell the product and it is the job of the stores’ landing pages to close the sale. Tell your visitors of your experiences and share stories. People appreciate being spoken to as an old friend sitting around the dining room table with a cup of coffee. Which lead to….

2. Have Product Experience - Whenever possible, own the product or work with the service you’re promoting. This allows you to speak as that expert with first-hand experience. Your passion for that fantastic product will shine through. You want your readers to get as excited as your are about the product. You’re not going to want to promote something that isn’t any good, no matter how high the commissions, right? Um….right?? This can only come by owner the product yourself. Plus, you’ll wind up with something really cool! ;)

3. Follow Your Niche - If you’re web site or blog that has to do with cellular phones, don’t join and promote an affiliate program for riding lawnmowers. You are not going to get your most wanted response that way, which is the click. Keep your subject matter and your affiliate programs in line with one another.

4. Deep Link - Let’s use the cell phone scenario and say that you’ve got a page or a blog entry about the Apple iPhone and you have an affiliate association with a large on-line cell phone store. When you’re figuring out which of their affiliate text links, banners or other creative to use, make sure you are able to deep link to the page or pages about Apple iPhones. You want to put your potential customer where they want to be. Don’t just link to the cell phone stores home page. That is like leading them out into the woods and then dumping them. Don’t make them search for that Apple iPhone information, lead them directly to it via your deep-linking affiliate link. That way will convert much better for you.

5. Work with The Affiliate Program Owners - They want to sell their products as much as you do. Even more. Don’t be afraid to contact them and voice your concerns, opinions and needs. Any affiliate program that is worth promoting will welcome your input. They will want to work with you. You’ll be able to tell who is worth working with and who is not. Do they have a large selection of creative to use? Do they offer attractive commission payouts (I tend not to take anything that pays out 2% of a sale or less) and long-term cookies? Do they allow deep linking with a bunch of pages to choose from? Is their affiliate program control center attractive and easy to use? Do they keep you informed via email about upcoming promotions and ways to help you make better conversions? If all that is being done, you should be working with them as best you can. They are obviously putting their best foot forward for you and their customers. If not, drop them and move on. They should always be there to help you in any way they can.

There you have it. Those are a few of the ways to work an affiliate program for all it’s worth. If you want the money (a no-brainer), learn all you can, work hard, work smart and don’t give up. Your failure or success is entirely dependent on you. Here’s to your success!

Alcohol and Motorcycles

April 29th, 2008

In the last twenty years, the legal system has created serious consequences for anyone driving under the influence of alcohol. However, the idea of driving a motorcycle under the influence is even more dangerous for a number of reasons.

First, it’s more deadly. Riders do not have the advantage and security of a metal cage a vehicle offers in the event of a crash. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2003), motorcyclists are about 26 times as likely to die in a traffic accident. It’s clear why, it’s the reason you love to ride, no restriction, open road. But it’s also no air bags, no safety features, and open concrete with vehicles all around you.

Second, motorcyclists were more likely to be intoxicated than any other driver, the highest of any type of vehicle. Motorcyclists had the highest rate of alcohol use among all vehicle types in crashes, motorcycles counting 37 percent, next to passenger cars at 27 percent, and sport utility vehicles at 27 percent.

Lastly, operating a motorcycle requires much more coordination than driving a passenger vehicle. Your reflexes are slowed, your vision is impaired, and you are less coordinated.

For all of the efforts of law enforcement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and motorcycle groups themselves to lower the incidence of riding while under the influence, the amount of motorcyclist fatalities rose from 1998 to 200, after it had been declining from 1993 to 1997.

Additional efforts are being made to reduce the number of accidents related to riding and alcohol use. This includes making people aware of the risks and having them take responsibility for themselves and others on the road.

An avid motorcyclist for over 35 years riding all different types of motorcycles, dirt bikes, sport bikes, cruisers and touring bikes.

Windows XP Tips for Computer Security

April 29th, 2008

Here are a couple of tips to speed up your Windows XP computer and help keep you protected and secure online. First you need to control which programs load on startup: Many of the programs you install on your computer automatically configure themselves to launch at startup, usually invisibly. The truly essential ones, such as anti-virus and firewall products, generally run as services and run fine in the background. Other less important software like media players don’t need to be running continually.

These extra programs slow the boot process and then severely suck up resources like memory and CPU cycles. It is pretty easy to control which applications launch on startup. The System Configuration Utility lists all these applications in one place:

1) To get there: Click the ‘Start’ button then choose the ‘Run’ command.

2) In the text box type msconfig . - Across the top of the dialog box select the ‘Startup’ tab.

3) The Startup Tab lists all the programs that launch at start-up. To disable any of these simply un-check the box on the left. Only non-essential programs are listed here it should be safe to un-check pretty much anything. If it turns out you needed it just go back and re-check it.

4) Once you are done re-boot the machine. 5) When the Desktop returns you will be presented with a window that says you have chosen Selective Startup. Just Check Do not show this window again and click OK.

To keep your computer secure, turn on automatic updates. Seems like every virus writer has nothing better to do then attack Windows operating systems. Keeping the system patches and security fixes is critical. During the setup of XP Service Pack 2 with a new computer or an up-grade you are asked whether or not to turn on automatic updates, if you made the mistake of checking no you can find this option in the Windows Security Center (Start / Control Panel) and change it back. Even with all its faults, XP is a powerful operating system that has many good security features.

Here are some more tips to help you get the most out of your operating system. Remove Windows components not found in ADD / REMOVE. Many Windows components, things like Network Services or Solitaire are easy to remove through the Add or Remove programs configuration window (Start / ControlPanel / Add and Remove Programs / Windows Components). Simply un-check them, but … some things are deliberately hidden.

A good example would be MSN Messenger. To remove this from startup follow these steps:

1) In Windows Explorer (right click Start / Explore), navigate to C:WindowsInf and make a copy of Sysoc.inf.

2) Double click on Sysoc.inf and it will open in Notepad.

3) Press Ctrl H (opens Find and Replace) and replace the string ,hide, with ,, then save and replace the file. Now all the hidden components will appear.

4) Then follow the steps above for removing programs from the startup menu.

To restore a corrupted system file: If a necessary system file should become missing or corrupted by a virus you can replace it from your Windows CD.

1) Go to Start / Search and type in the file name replacing the last letter with an underscore (ex. Filename.ex_).

2) If the file is found, open a command prompt (Start / Run, type CMD in the textbox).

3) At the prompt type expand followed by the full pathname of the file and destination (expand D:Windowsfilename.ex_ C:Windowsfilename.exe) where D: is the letter of your disc drive. If either pathname contains spaces surround the entire pathname with double quotes. If the file isn’t found search again using the un-modified file name, it is probably in a CAB file, Windows treats these as folders, simply drag the new folder to the destination while holding down the right mouse button then select Copy Here.

Microsoft Dynamics GP Customization Design

April 29th, 2008

Microsoft Great Plains customization specking out might be challenging enough, especially if you try to think about GP modification from the perspective of .Net “surface” mods, not getting to the Dexterity depth - its tables structure, records workflow (how transactions are distributed in SQL Dex tables clusters: master, work, open, historical). As GP consultant you naturally understand that if you spec out customization, you need to decide on programming tools, and this in turn determines the customization architecture. Currently GP modification, reporting and integration tools are .Net, Dexterity, SQL scripting, eConnect, Integration Manager, Modifier with VBA, Extender, ReportWriter, SRS, Crystal Reports; in the case of Business Portal customization is more challenging, it is in .Net and UML and you do not have the option of direct modification access to SQL server. Let’s come through the techniques and options:

1. Business Logic mapping. This part is the most important. You need to decide how your customization extension will integrate with existing business logic. It might be independent custom logic with following integration to GP tables - in this case you should be familiar with GP master and transactions records distribution in GP. The easiest and most reliable approach is to imitate intended integration records via Great Plains user workstation data entry

2. .Net. Consider web ecommerce data publishing from Great Plains SQL tables. However, make your homework and research GP tables structure. Open GP workstation and go to tools->resource description->tables. We only intend here to orient you for the next step, not really give you complete solution, so you is the one to explore the further options

3. eConnect. In addition to above option, eConnect will give you some comfort level manipulating master and work transaction records in GP. In eConnect you can not post Great Plains transactions, due to Microsoft Great Plains Dexterity architecture - posting is left to GP users

4. Modifier/VBA. This tandem was very popular in 1990th and earlier 2000th, however now it is legacy as it is not .Net compliant. VBA is also Integration Manager modification tool. VBA scripting is very powerful - you can include Dexterity sanscript scriplets into Modified forms logic, which is very cool, but unfortunately not easily upgradeable to new GP version. VBA usesOLE Server functionality

5. Microsoft Dexterity. Former name is Great Plains Dexterity. This tool requires professional Dex developer, otherwise you will get into years long learning curve with all the known development errors and traps. The beginning of Dex learning are Dynamics.dic, Dex.ini, Dynamics.set, DEX_ROW_ID

6. Integration Manager. Besides obvious and intuitive integration you can extend it with VBA scripting and data translation. At this time IM is in process of being redesigned in eConnect (on the business objects level - SQL stored procedures), this should resolve known IM performance issue. Consider direct eConnect programming if you plan to integrate over ten thousand records per day

7. Reporting Tools. You should be aware that both SRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) and Crystal Reports will more likely require SQL Stored Procedures or SQL Views to be based on. If you decide to follow the “wizard” approach - the chances are high that you will end up with long term debugging and then move back to SQL stored procedure or view
