I am always amused what people are worried about nowadays.

How they look in a mirror, their clothes, their “style”, what type of car they drive, how they have the right bracelet, to match the right earrings, to go with the stylish ankle bracelet, down to the matching toe ring.

I’m serious here…….

Or better yet, they’re worried about how many video games they are going to play today, how many movies they are going to rent, and how many bags of candy they can polish off in one sitting.

Too bad there is not enough focus on the many teen fitness concerns out there.

Ok, maybe I’m focusing a little too much on you “kids” here (lol)…….

Unless, you parents are doing this too (lol).

Don’t worry kids…..many parents need to go to a adult fitness camp too………

Worried to beat traffic, worry to get to work early, worry to finish everything at work so fast so you can get home quickly to drive your kids to softball, baseball, music, dance practices, then run home, shove down a greasy hamburger, fries, and your favorite carbonated beverage, then watch some TV, get heartburn, and go to bed.

Sounds like a great life, huh?

Sign me up!……..just kidding, of course.

Unfortunately, what I have just written (or very close to it) is all too knowing for many people/families in this world.

It’s sad really.

It’s sad (to me at least) to see that people put SO MUCH IMPORTANCE on stuff like this and almost zero importance on their health and well-being.

I’m about to give you a big secret……

A secret that almost nobody (again, unfortunately) follows……

Are you sure??? (lol), OK…….

Profound, isn’t it?

But so true.

So many people nowadays with all the hustle and bustle that goes along with everyday life: work, family, kids, stress, after-school activities, laundry, home repairs, mowing your yard, weeding flowerbeds, washing floors, doing dishes…….how do you have time for your health?????

Answer: You make time for it.

So many things we do are of little importance, but yet we “worry” about them so much. Then, when one of our loved ones falls ill, or develops a disease, virus, etc., we all ask “what went wrong?” Invariably, it is everything that I have talked about in this article (at least to an extent).

So, what can YOU do?

Well, for starters, why don’t you “worry” (not being paranoid, mind you……more like being aware of the situation) about your health and fitness.

Instead of worrying if your new shirt matches all 35 pairs of your pants…….why don’t you “worry” how you can make tonight’s dinner 50% healthier for you and your family.

Or “worry” how you can eat a more nutritious breakfast every morning (preferably not donuts and Pop-Tarts, washed down with a nice, tall sugar-laced beverage).

You see, making small changes like the ones I am suggesting do SO MUCH for your overall health and fitness, it’s not even funny.

I hate to start throwing out clich?s, but as they say……

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”

Unfortunately, for some of you it should be “An ounce of prevention is worth 20 pounds of cure”.

Or maybe 40 pounds.

Heck, it might be 100 pounds.

The amount really doesn’t matter.

What does matter is that you better get off your tail and hold yourself accountable for your health.

YOU can make better decisions.

YOU can make time for fitness (also, let’s get off our butts, and help put a stop to all these teen fitness concerns).

YOU can lead your family by example.

Don’t wait until you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, clogged arteries…..etc.

Why put yourself through all that pain and expense (time and money)???

Why don’t you look ahead (and I’m not talking about to tonight’s dinner), and gauge where you want to be at in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years.

Hint: your goal should be to be in the best shape you can possibly be in, at all times.

Burglars will always go after the easiest target. Not necessarily the biggest house on the block-but the easiest one to break into. Burglars like dark houses, and they like to get in fast. If your house is well-lit or takes more than five minutes to break into, chances are they’ll go elsewhere. If you want to make your house less inviting to burglars, here’s how to do it.

Keep the lights on. It’s a good idea to invest in security lighting. If your home or yard is kept lit at night, it’s a definite burglar deterrent. When lighting your home, it’s important not to make it blaze so brightly it bothers the neighbors-but a downlight over your garage and front doors, uplights beneath windows, and a few well-placed outdoor lamps in the yard can go a long way towards discouraging most break-ins.

Get a good home security system. The best home security systems have an alarm that automatically alerts the police. Motion detectors are useful to install in your yard-turn them on before you go to bed at night so they don’t go off when you and your family are outside during the day.

Have a thick door with a deadbolt. Your door should be in good repair. It should fit its frame well, with no chinks and no soft or rotting wood in the frame. The best lock in the world won’t keep a burglar out if your door isn’t strong as well. You should have a deadbolt-never rely on those doorknob locks. Get a peephole, preferably a wide-angle one, installed in your door. It’s much safer than using a chain-strong burglars can break those chains and push you aside to get in.

If you have a garage, this also applies to the door that leads from it to the inside of your house. Garage doors are often flimsy, with cheap locks. Make sure the door that goes into your house from your garage is just as strong as your outside-access doors, with the same strong deadbolts and peephole.

If you have sliding glass doors, you’ve probably noticed the locks are weak. Don’t depend on a stick set in the door channel. Go to your local hardware store and see what they have for strong locks for these doors.

Don’t make it obvious you’re away. When you go away on holiday, don’t close your blinds any more than you usually do. Have the post office hold all mail and packages so it doesn’t collect outside your door. Ask a friend to collect hand-delivered circulars from your doorstep. If you’re going to be gone for longer than a week, pay someone you trust to mow your lawn or shovel your driveway.

Many people install timers on the lights in their homes, and set them to go on and off at appropriate times to make it look like you’re home. There are lots of other ways to do this as well, like installing motion-sensitive lights outside of your house and putting your radio and TV on a timer so that they go on and off, as well.

Get a home security safe. If you have anything especially valuable in your house-jewelry or important documents, for example-protect them with a home security safe. These can go a long way toward protecting your peace of mind, as well as your belongings.

Don’t show off tempting items. Open your blinds and look in your windows-from the street as well as from your yard. Can you see a television, a computer, stereo equipment, or any other valuables from your windows? If so, you may be advertising to burglars without knowing it. Make sure nobody from outside can see any valuable objects in your house. Also, don’t leave anything outside in your yard that can be carried off-it makes too tempting a target for even casual thieves.

Watch your windows. Make sure your windows are strong and in good repair-including the frames. In addition, it’s a bad idea to put a window-mounted air conditioner in a window on the ground floor-these can be easy to push out. It’s a good idea to trim shrubs and trees near windows, as these can provide cover for burglars.

Careful with your keys. Don’t keep your keys on a ring with your home address anywhere on it. And don’t hide an extra key under the doormat, in that flowerpot by the door, or anywhere else outside. You may think you’ve found the perfect hiding place, but most burglars know where to look. Think about getting a key safe.

Contact your local police. Often, the police will send someone to assess your house and recommend the steps you should take to make your home safer. This is a good thing to do anytime you move into a new house, or if there have been robberies at other homes in your area recently.

Keep your house from being a tempting target. Don’t help burglars rob you by keeping your house dark at night, keeping expensive items by the window, or neglecting your windows and doors. Follow these simple tips, and your home will be much less inviting to criminals-and much safer.

This exuberant autobiography takes us through movie director Norman Jewison’s entire career, from the fluffy Doris Day comedies of his early years to his most powerful dramas. Over more than forty years, he has made films that are not only highly entertaining, but at times manage to make a valuable moral statement about the world.

Jewison, who was born in Canada in 1927, describes a pivotal moment in his life when, after World War II, he traveled through the American South in his Canadian military uniform and was browbeaten by a bus driver after he, not understanding the system of segregation, chose to sit in the back of a bus. The incident made a powerful impact on him, and eventually resulted in a determination to portray the ugliness of racial injustice cinematically. The outcome of this determination is a collection of groundbreaking movies which illuminate the inequities in an America divided into black and white.

Jewison’s powerful 1967 drama In the Heat of the Night stars Sidney Poitier as strong, outspoken black Philadelphia police detective Virgil Tibbs, who ends up stranded at a Mississippi train depot in the middle of the night. When a wealthy factory owner is murdered, Tibbs is hauled in for questioning and ends up collaborating with chief of police Bill Gillespie to solve the crime. The entire film crackles with racial tension as Tibbs comes up against dangerously violent citizens stirred up by the businessman’s death and Tibbs’ powerful and unyielding presence.

Jewison expressed doubts about being able to get the movie made to Senator Robert F. Kennedy; Kennedy urged him to persist, saying, The time is right for a movie like this. Kennedy was right; the film was received with critical acclaim and recognized as revolutionary for its time, the first portrayal of a strong, independent black man who did not back down in the face of white aggression.

Jewison has continued to make pointed statements about race; in the 1984 A Soldier’s Story, an Army investigator (Howard Rollins) looks into the murder of an unpopular black sergeant in the South; the 1999 drama The Hurricane, depicts the true story of boxer Hurricane Carter’s conviction and imprisonment for a crime he didn’t commit, and the man’s ultimate vindication.

Jewison’s cinematic range covers just about every genre. The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! (1966) is a hilarious and touching account of a Russian submarine which beaches itself on a sandbar off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. Part of the crew goes ashore and causes a panic among the island’s residents; when the rest of the crew manages to free the submarine, it ends up tooling into the town harbor, threatening a violent confrontation which is averted when the islanders and the Russians must work together to save a small boy from danger. The movie was a resounding success in the Soviet Union as well as in the U.S., and may have done as much for d?tente between the two superpowers as any politician in either country.

Moonstruck (1987), an off-beat romantic comedy starring Cher and Nicholas Cage; In Country (1989), a brooding analysis of the effects of the Vietnam War on an emotionally damaged vet (Bruce Willis) and his niece (Emily Lloyd), herself an orphan of a soldier who didn’t make it home; The Cincinnati Kid (1965), in which Edward G. Robinson and Steve McQueen face off in a gritty and psychologically intense poker game are all markedly different from each other, as are all his movies. One trait each of Jewison’s movies does have in common with all the others is a deep understanding and sympathy for human nature; even his villains exhibit a depth and a complexity uncommon in moviemaking.

The book contains inside info on the making of each of Jewison’s movies and plenty of fascinating tidbits about the actors and other celebrities he’s dealt with over the years. The result is a book which offers insight into the author, a great overview of his movies, and a thoroughly enjoyable read.
