Yes, it’s true…there currently is a need for 1000 trained catastrophe adjusters in the United States. As a consumer advocate I’m always looking for new career opportunities for the people that have been downsized. So I heard about catastrophe adjusting and went to the top expert in the country, Howard Williams, to learn more. Here is my interview.

Recently I had a chance to sit down with Howard and discuss his years as a storm adjuster.

Hugh: “Howard, what exactly is a “storm adjuster” and what do you do?”

Howard: “When a major storm or other catastrophe hits anywhere in the country and the claims load is larger than the local adjusters can handle, the insurance companies turn to a core group of storm adjusters. These adjusters are available to respond to disasters wherever they are and whenever they are needed. Working as an extension of insurance company’s claims department, adjusters assist the company’s policyholders in evaluating and preparing their claims for damages.”

Hugh: “I think that you have created a slogan that pretty well says it: “Going where needed, when needed.”

Howard: “Yes, that is true and it has certainly been true in my case. In the past 35 years I have been to almost every natural disaster and even several man-made ones that have made the headlines in the United States. Most recently I spent six months in the Hurricane Katrina ravaged areas of Mississippi and Alabama.”

Hugh: “Six months?”

Howard: “Yes, I was there in the area for six months except for coming back home several weekends. That is one of the requirements of this profession. You must be able to go any time and any where they need you. For instance, with Katrina I was on the road heading to Mississippi as soon as the roads were open for rescue trucks to get in there. I arrived there to find no motel rooms available in either Mississippi or Alabama. I finally found a condo that I was able to rent in the panhandle of Florida. Therefore I had to make that long trip daily back and forth. So you have to know how to take care of yourself and I credit a great deal of that ability to my former police training.”

Hugh: “Yes, I knew that you had been a police officer in your earlier years. What other training have you found valuable?”

Howard: “As you know I’m also a personal coach and that training has been immensely valuable. For instance, in Florida, when I have worked the big hurricanes like Andrew I have found numerous senior citizens who were in a total state of shock. I would arrive at their homes to find them sitting in living rooms that had no roofs with water soaked carpets. Many had no one to turn to since their neighbors were too busy taking care of their own problems. So the first item of business is for me to get them out of that house. I want to get them into a nice clean, dry motel room if possible.

Hugh, you have to learn to EMPATHIZE with their situation and not get caught up in the drama going on. That’s where my personal coach training has been invaluable. Most storm adjusters either are too business like or they get caught up in the drama happening. You want to help but you still have to focus on the situation - determining the damage done to their dwelling.”

Hugh: “So what do you do to determine that damage?”

Howard: “This is where you have to use your skills of estimating and also having a background in construction certainly does not hurt. I have to begin to look at the overall situation to determine what has been damaged by water and what has been damaged by wind. As you are aware as a consumer investigative reporter, there have been numerous stories in the media regarding this with Hurricane Katrina victims. No one seems to understand that certain damages are not covered by insurance.

Estimating and surveying the damage is where it can get very interesting. You may find yourself climbing up to a roof to explore damage and the next minute find yourself crashing through that roof! It has happen to me. Also usually in areas like Mississippi you are likely to find numerous snakes beginning to take up residence in the houses. Not to mention the heat that usually returns after the storm.”

Hugh: “Well with my fear of heights over 10 feet this is certainly not something that I would do well with.”

Howard: “That’s where a husband/wife team comes in real handy. We find a number of husband/wife teams in storm adjusting. Usually, but not always, the husband will do the climbing and the wife will write down the findings. Both need to know how to estimate and a background in construction is a plus

Hugh: “Well, I’m sure people reading this interview will want to know: ‘How much can one make in this business?’”

Howard: “This can be a very lucrative career especially if you are doing major events like Katrina. I earned in the neighborhood of $120,000 for the six months work.”

Hugh: “WOW, $120,000 for six months work?

Howard: “Yes, when you learn the ropes like I will be teaching at my new school in North Carolina, it is possible to eventually be earning that amount for six months work. And both fortunately and unfortunately, this type of work will not have any downsizing in the near future.”

Hugh: Yes, as you know I also own an emergency preparedness consulting business. Our reports from Max Mayfield, chief meteorologist for the National Hurricane Center, are that the powerful hurricanes like Katrina will increase in number over the next ten years.”

Howard: Yes, and that is just hurricanes. Think of all the earthquakes, tornadoes, wild fires, wind storms, floods, etc. occurring in the United States every year. According to our industry association there will be a need for 1,000 new storm adjusters in 2007 alone.”

Hugh: Howard, you mentioned your new school. Tell us more about it and how people reading this interview can learn more.”

Howard: “Yes, I have decided to take my 35 years of experience in storm adjusting and offer a two week school for those looking for a new career. Because search engines are now looking at high quality one-way (inbound) links. Says Susan Gilbert, AME’s SEO expert: Google has declared 2007 as the year of the incoming link - high quality, one-way links. Now more than ever, it is important to create a long term site building presence that focuses on the community aspect of the World Wide Web.

A backlink is a link which directs others towards your site. They are sometimes referred to as inbound links. These are links that go from another website to your website. But it’s more than just that, it’s also about having backlinks that matter. If you haven’t done a vanity search on yourself in a while try this: Google your name and see what sites come up (when you Google your name use the + sign between your first and last name for a more accurate search). Now take a quick peek at the list of sites and see how they rank according to Google, are they on the 20th page of a Google search or are they on the 1st or 2nd page? These are all indicators of high quality, high traffic sites. Now look at the sites that are in your topic/market. Ideally, you want every site linking to you to be your market. That’s the definition of a high quality, high traffic site.

The number of backlinks that your site has is an indication of how popular or important it is according to the major search engines. Backlinks are important for SEO, because search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, will give more credit to those sites with a good number of quality backlinks. They will then consider these sites more relevant than others in the results pages of a search query.

Most search engines will want websites to have a level playing field, and so will more often than not look for natural links that have been built slowly over time. Link farms or companies that promise hundreds of backlinks will do nothing but get your site delisted by the search engines. Once this happens, it could take months, and even years to get it back online. (Delisting means that the site no longer comes up in search engines).

Although it can be fairly easy to manipulate the links on a web page in order to achieve a higher ranking, it is a lot harder to influence a search engine with external backlinks from another site. This is why these feature so highly in a search engine’s algorithm.

According to research we’ve done, there are a number of ways in which you can get additional backlinks to your website.

1. Reciprocal Linking.

This is where you link to another site that provides the same service or product as you and they in turn have a link to your site on theirs. While very popular in the past, this exchange of links is not as valuable as one-way links.

2. Site Submissions.

Submit links for your site to directories which allow free submissions, or if you can afford it, some paid directories. There are many sites which offer a service where you can submit your site details to numerous sites. Plus, if you want, you can always create your own directory of similar websites.

3. Blogging.

This has now become an integral part of the Internet, and is one of the most effective ways of linking.

You either have the choice of placing a few words of comments on to someone else’s blog, or you may want to link to them from your own blog. However, with so many people creating blogs and wanting to link to each other’s blogs, this can be extremely time-consuming.

4. Articles.

This is another way of getting great backlinks. It’s vital that any articles you write are on the subject, informative and thorough in relation to your site.

Quality articles published on article sites are a great way of getting even more backlinks to your site.

Always include a resource box at the end, as this will include that all important backlink to your site. This resource box should also include a short biography regarding you and your site.

5. Social Bookmarking.

This is a way to record your favorite sites online at the various social bookmarking sites, and that way the search engine spiders pick up your bookmarks and follow these backlinks to your websites.

6. Creating Feeder Sites.

Adding a MySpace or Squidoo page with links back to your website is extremely beneficial and expands your online presence at the same time.

The above are just a few ways that you can get backlinks to your websites to help them rank more highly in the search engines and attract more traffic. Using these techniques you should see an increase in the volume of traffic arriving at your website.

The important thing is to take action today. Things are getting more and more competitive, with thousands of websites coming online every day. If you want to succeed online (and everyone needs to be online), you’ll want to get started now.

Chemistry and biology students at Atlanta Schools North Atlanta High School put their lab skills into action for a Court TV film crew on April 11. As part of the “Forensics in the Classroom,” program, students learned how to collect and analyze evidence of a crime scene. They weren’t flying blind. Instead, they had help from a range of criminal investigation experts, beginning with the head of their own science department, Dr. Cadence Spearman. In addition to Dr. Spearman, students interacted with Court TV host Rachelle Savoia, Police Lt. H. Cotton - Tukes, forensic investigators from the Fulton County Police Department, and a criminal science instructor from Bauder College.

The staged crime took place in the school’s cafeteria and involved acts of vandalism and a cut gas line. Students worked through the crime scene, learning the proper procedures for collecting evidence. The evidence that they collected, including hair fibers, stomach contents, and blood makeup, was then analyzed in the school lab.

The exercise demonstrated a new standards - based forensics curriculum developed by Court TV, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and the National Science Teachers Association. The program combines standard high school lab techniques with a mystery solving element.

Students at North Atlanta High School participated in Unit Four of the “Forensics in the Classroom” Curriculum. Called “The Cafeteria Caper,” the crime they investigated involved a trashed high school cafeteria that might be linked to an underground club. The lab techniques required for the investigation included an enzyme test and the analysis of hair, blood, and DNA - all within their own school laboratory.

To begin the exercise, students were given handouts that explained the background information of the crime that they would be investigating. They are also given several handouts explaining the nature of forensic investigation and how forensic techniques are used to solve crimes.

Students examine a range of evidence. Some of it comes from the crime scene itself, but students also have access to a mock website that details the practices of the underground club they are investigating. The website provides them with additional information for the physical evidence that they collected, helping them to match the evidence with suspects from the website.

The “Forensics in the Classroom” Curriculum provided detailed lab guides for conducting the necessary experiments. After they had reached their conclusions, they were instructed how to fill out Crime Lab Reports documenting their evidence.

The “Cafeteria Caper” addressed five of the national forensics curriculum standards. These included:

? Developing an understanding of the Cell (including enzyme function, organic molecules and indicators)
? Developing an understanding of the Molecular Basis of Heredity (including chromosomes, DNA and genetic inheritance
? Understanding and performing scientific inquiry
? Analyzing and synthesizing several pieces of data to draw a conclusion
? Developing an understanding of science and technology

The “Forensics in the Classroom” Curriculum consists of five units designed along the same lines as the “Cafeteria Caper.” With names such as “It’s Magic”, “The Celebration”, “The Car That Swims”, and “Renter’s Beware”, each unit promises a unique story line and a different set of laboratory techniques to be used. While you can easily obtain ready mixed spices in most supermarkets or Asian speciality shops these days, you get a fresher, more authentic taste when you mix your own. It may be a little time consuming, but well worth it for the extra flavour.

If you are going to mix your own flavourings from whole, rather than powdered, ingredients, you will need an electric coffee grinder or spice grinder, otherwise you will not obtain the powdery consistency.

A much used spice mix, usually incorporated towards the end of cooking time, is Garam Masala (which actually means hot spice) and there are probably as many recipes as there are families in India. However, one of my favourite cookery writers is Madhur Jaffrey and in her book Indian Cookery, she recommends the following:

1 tbsp cardamom seeds
A 2 inch (5cm) stick of cinnamon
1 tsp black cumin seeds
1 tsp whole cloves
1 tsp black peppercorns
? of an average-sized nutmeg

Finely grind all the spices together and store in an air-tight jar in a cool dark place.

Another recipe uses rather more ingredients as follows:

1 tsp coriander seeds
1tsp cumin seeds
? a dried chilli
? tsp nutmeg
1 tsp black peppercorns
1tbsp cardamom pods
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 fairly large bayleaf

Remove the seeds from the cardamom pod and if you don’t want a hot mix, the seeds from the dried chilli. As before, grind finely and store carefully.

For a slightly different, more aromatic flavour, dry roast the spices first in a frying pan.

If you often cook in a hurry, you may want to have a pre-prepared curry powder to hand. Shop bought curry powder is not particularly flavoursome, so make some of your own as store as for Garam Masala. Don’t make too much at a time as it will lose its flavour.

1 tsp coriander seeds or coriander powder
Dried chillies or chilli powder to taste.
1 tsp cumin seeds or cumin powder
? tsp garlic powder or garlic salt
? tsp salt (omit if using garlic salt)
1 inch (2.5cm) cinnamon stick or 1 tsp cinnamon powder
1 large bayleaf
? tsp cloves
Seeds from 8 cardamom pods
1 tsp black peppercorns or powdered black pepper

If you are using whole spices, you will need an electric grinder, but if you are using powdered ingredients, just mix them together in a bowl or jar and store as before.

The essay writing process

This is the most important part of the essay writing process. Once you have properly understood what the essay question is asking you - you can analyze what kinds of supporting research you will need. Highlight key terms and brainstorm some possible angles.

2. Research:

Thanks to the Internet - research has become much easier and more fun that it was in past generations. Without this super research tool we would all have to spend a great deal of time in the library searching for information.

But this doesn’t mean that libraries are obsolete. You can still find better information in a library (although soon there will be vast libraries in the Internet too!). If you are even slightly interested in the topic - simply typing the keywords in your assignment and googling them can provide a wealth of information and viewpoints. Be careful to keep the two separate. Whatever resources you use you must be sure to take good notes for referencing. Include the year, page number and any other information you can. This will make the process of writing much easier for you later. When writing university level essays you will have to reference each point you make so you will do yourself a huge favor by getting into the habit early.

3. Mapping out your argument:

With all that great research under your belt you can be sure that the next step will be easier. Take good notes and fit all your points into sections. Mind mapping is a great tool for organizing information in an efficient and fun way.

4. Writing it all up:

Undoubtedly the hardest part of the process is crafting the essay. But now that you have prepared thoroughly you will be able to relax and have some fun putting together your essay.

5. Referencing:

Because you took such good notes you are going to sail through the reference pages.
