Over the last decade, schools across the nation have experienced the loss of music. The San Diego schools also had to replace music in many of its schools with other curriculum dictated by the state or federal law. The San Diego schools’ budget only stretches so far and, unfortunately, the arts have felt the biggest hit.
Frank Glasson and the Presidio Brass are changing all of that for the San Diego schools. A trumpet player by profession, Frank is also president of Local 325 of the American Federation of Musicians and director of Presidio Brass, a brass quintet. The veteran musician has performed with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, the San Diego Opera, and San Diego’s Westwind Brass, as well as ensembles in Europe, Africa and Asia.
Glasson saw that music was steadily disappearing from the San Diego schools and wanted to do something about it. He believes that the constant influence of television, movies, computers and CDs could erode the senses of youth to the more refined music. He enlisted the help of the other members of Presidio Brass - Ray Nowak, Mike McCoy, Sean Reusch, and Scott Sutherland, who play the trumpet, French horn, trombone, and tuba, respectively.
Working under the umbrella of the nonprofit San Dieguito Performing Arts Association, Presidio Brass developed the “Musicate the Mind” program for the San Diego schools. Musicate is an educational and musical outreach program, developed specifically to fill the musical void in the schools. With Glasson’s wife Robyn coordinating the events and developing contracts with the San Diego schools, Presidio Brass presents various customized programs for the different grade levels that fits any educational or outreach school requirement.
Glasson and his ensemble want to create relationships with the San Diego schools students, not just play music for them. Within that relationship, he hopes the children will grow to appreciate live music and keep it alive by becoming tomorrow’s supporters of live instrumental music. He plans to eventually do 200 programs per year all over Southern California.
For kindergartners through fifth graders, Presidio Brass introduces the brass instruments, their development, and historical context. The quintet members also give some basic musical concepts in a fun and engaging manner.
For fourth and fifth graders, the ensemble can integrate music into the core curriculum by teaching language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science through the language of music.
For middle and high schoolers, they present their Residency-for-a-Day program, which exposes San Diego schools students to the brass quintet. The hope is to inspire students to promote and cultivate their own musical abilities. Additionally, they want to give encouragement and instruction to those already playing instruments, knowing that such support is crucial.
For high schools, Presidio Brass gives master classes and concerts for their school orchestras and bands.
Though Glasson and the Presidio Brass quintet are in other school districts as well, the San Diego schools and their students will benefit greatly from this unique outreach musical program.

Prevent Ingrown Hairs When Shaving Or Waxing - When Shaving…
Shave after the hair has been wet for at least 5 minutes. Hair that is wet and full of moisture can be cut easily. Hair that is not well saturated can be very strong and tough. As the razor passes over, the hair is pulled up from the follicle. After it is cut it retracts below the skin surface with the resultant risk of it growing into surrounding tissue.
Shave in the direction of the hair growth. Cutting with the grain not against it will prevent hair being cut too short.
Prevent ingrown hairs by avoiding repeat strokes over the same area. Repeated strokes can also result in hair being cut too short.
Shave with the skin in a relaxed condition. Do not stretch the skin too taught. A little pressure may be necessary but excessive stretching can again result in hair being cut too short.
Use Tea Tree Oil twice a day in conjunction with a loofah bath or shower. Tea Tree Oil has a bacterial ability to kill infection and prevent pustules forming. (Avoid the eye area)
When Waxing
To pull out the hair cleanly without breaking it follow these recommendations: Apply a thin layer of wax in the direction of the hair growth, preferably holding the spatula or tongue depresser at a 45 degree angle as you spread the wax.
When applying the cotton strip over the wax, rub in the same direction as the hair growth leaving about 1/3 of the strip free to allow for a firm grip for a fast back pulling action.
Pull the skin taut before pulling the cotton strip away.
Pull back with a rapid movement close to the skin. Do not pull up or out, rather pull back.
One fast, smooth, pull back is much more effective than a series of light pulls which only increase the pain and leave patchy areas.
After 24-48 hours exfoliate the skin (with a Loofah sponge for example) to prevent the dead skin from accumulating in areas that can become ingrown such as the bikini line, upper thighs, underarms and calves.
Prevent ingrown hairs by not wearing tight clothing over freshly waxed areas to minimize the risk of irritation and ingrown hairs.
Mike Jones is a writer and webmaster with over 10 years experience. His recommendation: To prevent and eliminate ingrown hair use Ingrown Hair Treatment. Click here for details: www.1bodycare.com/iht.htm http://www.1bodycare.com/iht.htm

What are depilatories?
A depilatory is a preparation in the form of a liquid or cream that is used to remove unwanted hair from the body. The word depilatory, pronounced di-pila-toree , literally means to deprive of hair (Latin pilus, hair).
What is the difference between a depilatory and an epilatory?
Depilatories remove hair on the skin’s surface. An epilatory such as waxing or tweezing (plucking) removes the hair from below the skin’s surface taking out the hair follicle.
How do depilatories work?
Depilatories contain chemicals with a high degree of acidity (low pH) such as sodium thioglycolate, or calcium thioglycolate. They react with the protein structure of hair breaking it down.
Depending on the coarseness of hair, within 5 to 15 minutes, the hair is dissolved into a gloopy mass which can then be washed away.
Why does skin feel so smooth after applying depilatories?
Depilatories act as an exfolient which means it removes dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. These dead skin cells accumulate every day and they often feel rough. After removal the skin feels softer and smoother.
Many depilatories contain moisturizers such as Baby Oil, Almond Oil, Green Tea Extract and Aloe which contribute to softer smoother skin.
Which is best - a depilatory cream or liquid?
A depilatory lotion or liquid is designed for larger areas of the body such as the legs, underarms and bikini area.
A depilatory cream has a thicker consistency so it can be applied to specific areas without the risk of it running on to skin you don’t want treated. A cream is therefore ideal for the face.
How long do the results last?
This varies with the individual but usually for many days even up to around two weeks.
Generally the results last longer than using a razor. The chemicals in depilatories reach down into the pores of the skin thus removing hair below the level of the skin. As a result, the hair takes longer to grow back.
Mike Jones is a writer and webmaster with over 10 years experience. Check out this page on his hair removal web site for guidelines on how to get the best results from depilatories: www.about-hair-removal.com/depilatory-tips.htm http://www.about-hair-removal.com/depilatory-tips.htm

How do you see yourself as a parent? How would you want your children to grow up? But before you answer that, here are three categories that you might generally classify yourself into, as a parent:
The Dictator - Parents who give orders for children to obey without hesitation. They don’t want their children to ask questions.
The Friend - Parents who suggest orders, but their children can participate in the rule-making process. Thus, consensus is reached upon making the decision - a typical ‘give and take’ relationship.
The Listener - Parents who just listen to their children’s desires.
Believe it or not, a rising number of families in the West are letting their children take control over their households. Many parents just desire to be encouraging dads or moms and want to make their children happy. However, most of them end up answering to the whims and wanton wishes of their children.
This doesn’t mean that parents have to be very strict and non-compromising to their children. The point is to incorporate discipline and proper values into children during the initial stages of their growth (around 4-6 years of age). The way the children are raised during this period will shape their personality and behavior.
At this specific period of development, children are not supposed to make decisions for the parents. They might get confused about who’s really in charge, making them insecure and anxious. They may end up distrustful of their parents whenever they feel that the parents should be the ones protecting them or making the decisions as mature adults. As parents, you must make it clear to your children that they are as important as you are, without imposing too much authority.
Here are the five most important tips in raising your children:
1. Teach your children to call you “dad” or “mom.” Don’t let them call you by your first name. Proper way of addressing is the first step in reinforcing respect and authority.
2. Don’t focus on the negative: whenever they’re using uncalled words or acting in a bad manner, instead of saying, “That’s bad!” you should say, “That’s not good.” This will give them an idea that adults or parents pay less attention to children with bad behavior or manners. Focus more on children who show good behavior. Children will notice how you reward good behavior and will strive to do what’s right.
3. Always show them you’re in charge and conscious of household management. It is impossible to guide children and seek their approval at the same time. When you ask your kids to do their tasks, don’t say, “Do your homework, okay!?” A better approach would be, “Do your homework, kids.”
4. When you make rules, think about them carefully before carrying them out. Once you do, don’t change them quickly. Stand by your rules. Children won’t take your rules seriously if you’re not consistent with them.
5. There is no need to compare your children. They have their individual weaknesses and strengths. While one may be good in the arts, another may be good in words or in sports. Comparing them worsens the inferiority complex of the disfavored child.
Over time, parents may shift from the category of being a “dictator” to a “friend” and so on. Just make sure you start adopting leniency at the appropriate age, during that time when a child starts to mature mentally and emotionally. But while children need your care, support, and most especially your guidance, make sure you act like a parent, not just a friend.

Other names the Chinese Crested is known as are:
? Chinese Edible Dog
? Chinese Ship Dog
? Chinese Hairless
? Chinese Royal Hairless
? Pyramid or Giza Hairless
? South African Hairless
? Turkish Hairless
The “crest” in its name refers to a copious shock of silky hair that graces the dog’s head.
The Chinese Crested is found everywhere, but has never reached great popularity. It has often been exhibited in circuses and carnivals as a “freak.” However, this little dog has many assets that go unrecognized.
There are two types of the Chinese Crested:
? Hairless
? With a full coat, which is called the Powderpuff
The Powderpuff is just about identical to the hairless except for the coat. The two are interbred and shown together. If you breed a hairless to a hairless or a Powderpuff to a hairless you can end up with either type or both types of puppies. Breeding a Powderpuff to a Powderpuff will always produce the Powderpuff type puppies.
Some authors claim the origin of the Chinese Crested is Africa. Others find its origin in Mexico or any of several other warm countries. The Chinese Crested is known to have been carried by trading ships from and to many different ports where it was bought and sold. Therefore, its origin is shrouded by sea tales.
The date of origin of the Chinese Crested is considered to be during the thirteenth century. Oriental countries concentrated on breeding miniaturized dogs, so the Chinese Crested ancestors probably include some of these small, hairless mutations.
The Chinese Crested originally enjoyed a pampered life with few duties except those associated with being a good companion. Very early in the development of the Chinese Crested breed it was probably used as a ratter on trading ships and was even sometimes eaten by human residents of these trading ships (how horribly awful to think of eating such a beautiful creature).
Personality
The Chinese Crested is said to be “a nimble and cunning playmate.” He is a vigilant and sensitive house dog. The Chinese Crested is a loving and obedient pet. He socializes well with other pets and is only a little cautious of strangers. The Chinese Crested is lively and active, but is rarely seen in agility contests. He is easily trained and should do well in obedience work.
Appearance
The Chinese Crested is fine-boned and graceful. He stands about 11 to 13 inches tall and weighs 5 to 12 pounds. He is athletic-looking and well muscled. The legs of a Chinese Crested are straight and strong. The Chinese Crested has a copious shock of silky hair that graces his head. Hair is absent over much of the remainder of its body except for tufts of hair on the tail and feet.
The Powderpuff has a flowing double coat of silky hair that covers its entire body. It is seen in any coat color or combination of colors.
Exercise Requirements
As with most toy breeds the Chinese Crested needs a minimal amount of exercise which can be obtained in your backyard.
Grooming
The Chinese Crested needs to be kept clean with frequent baths using a good shampoo followed by a moisturizer like baby oil or baby lotion. This routine is especially true for the hairless type.
The Powderpuff requires regular brushing and combing. The teeth need cleaning regularly.
You will need a good-quality bristle brush and a safety razor (to shave the face) for the Hairless variety. For the Powderpuff coat you will need a good-quality bristle brush, a wide-toothed comb and clippers.
The skin of the Hairless type responds well to frequent oiling by massaging baby oil or Nivea face cream into the hairless parts. This helps to keep the skin on the Chinese Crested Hairless type smooth and nicely moisturized.
The Powderpuff puppy requires frequent brushing with a bristle or pin brush particularly when the puppy coat changes to the adult coat, at which time daily grooming may be needed. The coat of a Powderpuff Chinese Crested should be brushed in layers with the lie of the coat.
After bathing, grooming and blow-drying, the face should be shaved using clippers (10 mm blade). Take a line from the outer corner of the eye to the ear and in a gentle curve from the ear down to the “Adam’s apple.” This cut is similar to the face of a Poodle. In the U.S. the Powderpuff face is not shaved. Finish off the entire body with a wide-toothed comb if desired. The comb will find any remaining tangles in the coat. Of note in the Chinese Crested is that the dog’s nails should be moderately long.

As you may have figured out, horses do not seem to speak our language. That is why we must learn to adapt and speak theirs. Have you noticed the swivel of their ears, the movements of their hips and the expressions on their face? These things are the way horses communicate with each other and us.
In order to understand their language first we must understand what our body language says to them. Waving arms around in a desperate attempt to get the halter on is sure to cause some alarm. Running towards them in a pasture instead of approaching them calmly can give them the image of a surprise attack by a predator. Remember, when it comes down to it, no horse is bombproof so when you are around your horse make sure your body language is slow and calm. Keeping yourself calm is the first step to helping a horse remain calm.
Horses speak with both ends of their body - unlike us humans who speak with only the top half. Not only are the back and front the ends where the signals come from they are also the ends where injuries to humans come from, so watch what they are telling you.
EARS BACK
Almost all horse people know that when a horse has his/her ears laid flat back something is amiss. The horse could be frightened or in most cases angry. This is a time to watch both ends of the horse’s body carefully.
Yet this gesture is not always dangerous. The horse could either be listening to commands or noises coming from behind or just be resting out of boredom. As you come to know your horse you will begin to learn the true difference.
EARS FOWARD
Not really anything to worry about right? Happy horses have their ears forward - sometimes but not always. As a horse directs his or her attention to something its ears usually follow. Also ears sticking up high can be signs of mischief or the horse being very alert. Good time to remind your horse you are in charge if his/her attention span flies around during your ride.
GROOMING
Most people approach grooming as something that just needs to be done and nothing else. In truth grooming your horse establishes a bond with you and that horse just as a horse would bond with other horses through grooming in the wild.
If you treat a horse roughly or only do a quick once over with the brush the horse can only assume you are a rough or harsh handler. Whereas if you spend a lot of time grooming and caring for the horse you create a trusting bond with it.

There is no one government agency in charge of issuing recall notices for all products. Instead, different products fall under different jurisdictions, each of which is handled by a completely separate agency. In this article we will explain the jurisdiction of each of the six major government agencies in charge of recalling products and issuing recall alerts.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - www.fda.gov http://www.fda.gov :
The FDA is probably most thought of when the word “recall” comes up. It is obvious that the FDA deals with food and drug issues, but they are also in charge of testing, monitoring and recalling medical devices (pacemakers, contact lenses…), animal feed, cosmetics, and products with the potential to cause health-related side effects, such as cell phones and lasers. Although the FDA is in charge of “food,” they also share that responsibility with the next federal agency…
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) - www.usda.gov http://www.usda.gov :
The USDA was founded by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, and has been involved in a variety of agricultural initiatives ever since. Not only is the USDA steward to our nation’s 192 million acres of national forests, and providing food to children through school breakfast and lunch programs, but the agency is also responsible for the safety of meat, poultry (including egg), milk and fish products. These responsibilities often encompass the study of pesticide use, which overlaps with the next governmental recall arm…
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - www.epa.gov http://www.epa.gov :
The EPA, in addition to the many other responsibilities involved in protecting our environment, are charged with the recalling of products that threaten to harm humans, animals, or the environment in which we live. For instance, recently the EPA ordered five national retail chains to recall a brand of spray confetti string which contained banned hydro chlorofluorocarbons blamed for depleting the ozone layer. This very same product could have also been recalled by another government agency, however, for its highly flammable contents, which are often sprayed over people at birthday parties near flaming candles. The agency that would be responsible for this type of recall is…
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) - www.cpsc.gov http://www.cpsc.gov :
The CPSC is in charge of protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from more than 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction . They handle recalls for a host of potentially dangerous products, from toys with choking hazards to heaters with propensity to start a fire. Most products with a defect of some kind will find their way into the CPSC database of recalled consumer products. But if that product has wheels and an engine, or is a part of a product that has wheels and an engine, you might be better off researching at the next governmental agency…
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) - www.nhtsa.dot.gov http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov :
The NHTSA was established to reduce deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes. They set and enforce safety standards for motor vehicles and vehicle parts, and provide studies and reports on anything related to motor vehicle use, from tires and seatbelts, to SUVs and cell phone use while driving. If you want to know if the used car you just purchased has any defective auto parts, the NHTSA database is a good start. However, if you just purchased a used boat, the following agency is better suited for your needs…
US Coast Guard - www.uscg.mil http://www.uscg.mil :
You probably don’t think of product recalls when someone mentions the Coast Guard. However, in addition to their duties to patrol America’s coast line and assist those in distress, the Coast Guard also tests, reports on, and recalls boats, boating parts, and marine safety devices like flares and life jackets. But good luck finding recall information on the Coast Guard’s website!
As you can see, the responsibilities of each agency overlap to some degree with other agencies. Furthermore, issuing recall alerts is only a small part of each organization’s responsibility. This is why is can be difficult, time-consuming and frustrating to locate the information you’re looking for among these six websites. Luckily, this problem has been remedied by an ex-journalist with a passion for social corporate responsibility and citizen journalism…
US Recall News - www.usrecallnews.com http://www.usrecallnews.com :
US Recall News is a non-governmental website that brings together recall alerts from each of the six major government agencies listed above, and separates them into various categories. The alerts are then archived at the end of each month, and remain searchable from the website.
Everett Sizemore is a journalism graduate of Bond University. He is the Editor-in-Chief at www.usrecallnews.com http://www.usrecallnews.com and writes the editorial blog about Recalled Products and Corporate Responsibility.

Recent world events have instilled a sense of fear in anyone who turns on the television or opens a newspaper. People are more aware of their vulnerabilities, and more interested in purchasing insurance. The irony is that the same disasters, disease and acts of war have created a negative trend in the property and casualty insurance industry, to the point where these types of insurance are more expensive and more difficult for consumers to obtain.
The property and casualty insurance industry posted a $7.9 billion net loss in 2001. According to the Insurance Services Office (ISO) and the National Association of Independent Insurers (NAII), this is first time that the industry has ever reported a net loss. Experts predicted a negative 2.7 percent return rate for property and casualty insurance, almost 6.5 percent lower than the return rate of the year 2000.
These losses have caused a number of property and casualty insurance companies to cut back in an effort to economize. One step taken to reduce losses was to avoid adding any new property and casualty insurance policies. The insurers have also purposefully stopped updating or renewing existing property and casualty insurance policies. As a result, the premium price of property and casualty insurance policies has increased.
A number of factors are said to have caused the property and casualty insurance problem, including acts of terrorism, natural disasters, economic turmoil, and even mold.
The headline of one trial lawyer publication, Mold is Gold , indicated that recent court decisions against insurers had jeopardized profitability of the property and casualty insurance industry. Invasive mold was recognized as the latest household hazard, and property and casualty insurance policyholders were cashing in with lucrative lawsuits. A well-publicized Texas lawsuit resulted in a staggering $32.1 million decision — extremely profitable for the owner, potentially devastating for the property and casualty insurance industry.
The terrorist attacks of September 11 greatly contributed to the negative impact on the property and casualty insurance industry. It has been reported that property and casualty insurance claims related to the events of September 11 totaled as much as $70 billion. The same event has also caused the decline of the stock market, adding to the insurance industry’s downward trend.
This negative impact has also had a detrimental effect on the real estate industry, where property and casualty insurance is essential. Property and casualty insurance coverage is essential when applying for a conventional, government-assisted and commercial mortgage; without it, lending companies will reject the mortgage application. Therefore, the real estate market cannot function properly if this type of insurance is more expensive or less accessible. In real estate, mortgages are paramount in closing the vast majority of sales. Without property and casualty insurance, there won’t be any mortgages, and sales in the real estate market will plummet. Moreover, without property and casualty insurance coverage, homeowners would find it difficult or impossible to maintain their mortgage obligations. Lenders would be forced to foreclose on the property, or subject the homeowners to expensive lender forced-place coverage.
No one can contest the devastating personal consequences of natural disasters, acts of terrorism and disease. The insurance and real estate industries are two examples of how these events have had a negative impact on our economy as well.

Do you have dreams about your own business? You have some thoughts about small business ideas, but you hesitate, you’re not sure it will work? What if you could achieve anything you want by using your mind in the right way?
Here are some words of advice to help you take control over your brain and mind, so you can succeed with your small business ideas.
The most important thing you have to realize, is that you’ve constructed your current life situation. Do you struggle to make a living or have a successful relationship? The cold hard fact is that, either you’re aware of it or not, you’re causing your lack of success.
There is no such thing, as a victim of circumstances. Once you have become aware of the powerful effect of your thoughts and emotions. You will be the master of your circumstances and achieve whatever you want in your life. Your small business ideas will be successful.
The universal law of attraction states : -You attract what you focus on-. Or, what you focus on will expand. So literally, if you don’t have the lifestyle, money or family situation you want, it’s because of focusing at the wrong things.
According to Quantum Physics, focusing actually causes changes in energy fields, that automatically produce a physical change in your surroundings.
Don’t focus on the problem! You have to focus on the solution and the outcome that you desire. The sad reality is that the majority of all people, focus on their fears, instead of what they want to accomplish.
A good example is : if you driving down the road and seeing a pothole. If you concentrate your focus at the pothole, with the intention to miss it, what happens? You’ll hit it, sure as eggs are eggs.
This applies in all areas of life. If you focus on your fears, you will make them a reality.
Are you afraid about spending money on education in order to reach your goals? Do you think that you might throw away money that you may never see again? Are you living in a constant feeling of fear?
As Sir Winston Churchill wisely said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Keep these words in mind when you realize your small business ideas.
Keep your focus on realizing that you must have the proper tools and education to succeed. You would not try to build your own house without a good set of tools and a bit of construction knowledge. Focus on doing what it takes to succeed with your small business ideas.
The key to success is : the more you focus on what you want, the more your goals will come trough, one after another.
