Incredible XP Tips You Wish You Knew Before You Read This, Part II

Incredible XP Tips you wish you knew before you read this, Part II

In Part I, I wrote about using short cut keys while using XP. In this edition, I am going to be focusing on the “run line”. This is sometimes referred to as the “start run line”.

There are many “built-in” commands that may be run “out-of-the-box”. When these tips and tricks are employed, you will find yourself able to move through XP much faster and efficiently.

In order to find the “run line” (RL), you will need to click on the Windows Start Button.

From there, you will notice the “Run…” command a few lines up from the start button. Click it. You may also you the following combination of keys: WINDOWS KEY + r

When you click the “Run…” line, a new dialog box will appear. This is the box where you will be typing in these shortcuts.

Useful RL commands for the novice and end-user:
(These commands are every-day, useful commands that everyone can use)

CAPS Will only work if additional software has been installed

*Exploring the computer:

You may also enter simple “paths” into the RL. For example:

C: Will open the contents of your hard drive
A: Will open the contents of your floppy drive
D: Will open the contents of your CD/DVD drive (usually)
?: Insert a letter for “?”, this will open the contents of that
drive

In addition, you may enter a full file path like C:\windows. This will open the windows directory. Also, if you are currently in an explorer window, you may enter an internet address and your default web-browser will open, and… vice-versa; You may also enter a local address, such as C:\windows , within your web-browser, and it will open the local path as well.

*Opening Web Pages:

By typing in a web-address using the RL, the default browser will automatically open. There is no need to start the web-browser first.

*Advanced RL commands:

.CPL commands:
(These are commands that open up specific control panels)

access.cpl Accessibility options
appwiz.cpl Add or remove programs

ntmsoprq.msc Removable storage operator requests
perfmon.msc Performance monitor
services.msc Services
wmimgmt.msc Windows management infrastructure

There are others as well…

*Creating your own RL shortcuts:

There are many ways to make RL shortcuts to applications. Some involve changing the registry and some involve other complexities. The following are the two easiest methods:

Method 1 (easiest, little risk):

1. Create a windows shortcut of the application you would like to
open by using the RL.

2. Save it to the “Windows” sub-directory. This is usually the
file path:”C:\Windows”.

3. Now you should be able to open the application using the RL.

Using the method works 99.9% of the time.

Method 2 (a little harder, but still easy in comparison to others,
some risk):

1. Open the control panel and choose Systems Properties.

2. Choose the Advanced tab and click Environment Variables.

3. From the “Systems variables” section, highlight “Path” and
click edit.

4. Go to the end of the entry name “Variable value:” and insert
this: ;c:\shortcuts

***Do not change anything else, or you may cause severe problems
withother applications and their function!

***REMEMBER, YOU ARE ADDING THIS TO THE EXISTING LINE, NOT DELETING
WHAT IS ALREADY THERE!

5. In the dialog boxes, click ok, then ok, then ok.

6. Create a directory (folder) called “shortcuts” in your “C:\ “,
root directory. The address line should read, C:\shortcuts when
you open it.

7. Create a windows shortcut of the application you would like to
open by using the RL.

8. Save it to the “shortcut” sub-directory you just made in the
previous steps.

9. Now you should be able to open the application using the RL.

Obviously, when you understand the above process, you may label and locate the directory anywhere you wish. By using the 2nd method you will be able to organize your shortcuts in a much cleaner fashion.

The Golden Girls (Season 1) DVD Review

Making its debut in the fall of 1985, The Golden Girls quickly established itself as a fixture of Saturday night prime time television. Following the lives of four older women living together as roommates in Miami, the show displayed a raw wit and a biting humor. The women live in the house of Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), a Southern belle who loves men of every kind and has dated every eligible bachelor in the Miami area. Her roommates are former high school teacher Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) and St. Olaff housewife and widower Rose Nylund (Betty White). Rose loves to tell stories about her former hometown, much to the chagrin of the other girls. The three are joined by Dorothy’s mother, the firebrand Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty), a spunky Italian immigrant who always speaks her mind. In her early 80’s, Sophia may walk at a measured pace, but the velocity of her sarcasm only increases with age.

Overall, this is a charming situation comedy with likeable characters who have certainly developed their own unique identities. Although some of the same aspects of the show tend to be used over and over again (such as the St. Olaff stories and Dorothy’s reaction to them), The Golden Girls never seems to grow tiresome. With powerful performances from each of the cast members, viewers will find that Sophia steals the show…

The Golden Girls DVD offers a number of hilarious episodes including the series premiere “The Engagement” in which Sophia Petrillo moves in with her daughter Dorothy and her two roommates, Blanche and Rose, after a fire destroys her retirement home, Shady Pines. Meanwhile, Rose develops a bad feeling when Blanche’s boyfriend Harry proposes… Other notable episodes include “The Competition” in which Dorothy and Blanche enter into a heated bowling competition with Rose and Sophia, and “The Operation” in which Dorothy is forced to undergo surgery on her foot. Feeling scared and sorry for herself, she develops a new outlook on life after her encounter with an inspirational hospital roommate…

First Thankgiving And Pies

In 1621, the Pilgrims and the Indians got together for three days of feast and celebration. The Wampanoags, a neighbor group of Indians brought the turkey and corn and the Pilgrims brought the pies. 12 selections. Everyone could choose their favorite kind. It had to be the pies that were the ‘hit’ of the feast. The pies were so good that the Indians invited the Pilgrims to stay. It had to be the pies.

Pie history according to PJ’s Totally Awesome Pies. PJ’s has 12 selections too.

Real Pie history

Pies were baked in America as soon as the early settlers set-up housekeeping on dry land. Beyond mere preference, however, there was a practical reason for making pies, especially in the harsh and primitive conditions endured by the first colonists. A piecrust used less flour than bread and it did not require anything as complicated as a brick oven for baking. More important, though, was how pies could stretch even the most meager provisions into sustaining a few more hungry mouths.

The first pies were very simple and generally of the savory (meat and cheese) kind. Flaky pastry fruit-filled turnovers appeared in the early 19th century. Some pie-type foods are made for individual consumption. These portable pies…pasties, turnovers, empanadas, pierogi, calzones…were enjoyed by the working classes and sold by street vendors. Pie variations (cobblers, slumps, grunts, etc.) are endless.

Pie-the filling and baking of sweet (fruits, nuts, cheese) or savory(meat, fish, cheese) ingredients and spices in casing composed of flour, fat, and water is an ancient practice. The basic concept of pies has changed little throughout the ages. Cooking methods (baked or fried in ancient hearths, portable colonial/pioneer Dutch ovens, modern ovens), pastry composition (flat bread, flour/fat/water/crusts, puff paste, milles feuilles), and cultural preference (pita, pizza, quiche, shepherd’s, lemon meringue, classic apple, chocolate pudding?) All figure prominently into the complicated history of this particular genre of food. The basic concept of a pie is taken to mean a mixture of ingredients encased and cooked in pastry.

Attention Shoppers - Retail Stores Are Destroying Our Credit Scores

Imagine this…

You walk into a department store to purchase something you need. Then the friendly young person at the cash register says, You can save 20% off your purchases today if you apply for our store credit card right now.

Save 20%? Wow! Sounds like a great deal, doesn’t it? But let’s take a look at what really happens to your credit when you give in to that temptation.

How Department Store Credit Cards Work

First of all, you have to remember that the young clerk, who barely looks old enough to drive, doesn’t understand how the system works. They just focus on how many applications they can sell during the holiday season. Clerks who sign up the most people get some kind of bonus in return-usually cash or company merchandise.

Let’s assume you agree and fill out a credit application. The clerk presses a few buttons and processes it on the spot. (Guess how? Yup, by quickly making a decision based on how high one of your FICO credit scores is.) This is called instant credit. You see, retailers know that the best time to sell you something is while you’re still in the store.

Whether or not you get approved, you have a credit inquiry from that store on your credit reports.

Your FICO Scores Can Plummet Up to 12 Points Per Inquiry

According to our research, each credit inquiry can lower a person’s credit scores up to 12 points. And here’s the kicker…EACH department store credit inquiry will affect your scores for 12 months. That’s 1 year! 365 days! 8,760 hours!

Let me repeat that: EACH inquiry from any retail store will count against your credit scores. Sometimes you end up going to 8, 10, or 20 different stores. If you’re applying for cards at all those stores, your scores are going to take a major dive.

Meanwhile, Back at the Department Store…

The young person behind the register suddenly announces (loudly, of course) that you were denied credit, gives you a receipt, and says, Thank you, please shop with us again. You walk out of the store rejected. Not to mention embarrassed-and you didn’t even save any money because you have to actually qualify for the card to save the 20%. Punks.

What went wrong?

You weren’t prepared.

I remember the fear that ran through me every time I filled out a department store credit application after my bankruptcy. I would actually wait until there was no one in line at the cashier! That way, if I got declined at least I wouldn’t get too embarrassed.

In the Snyder household, we don’t apply for this type of credit anymore. It was one of the reasons we filed bankruptcy 12 years ago. So we stay clear of department store credit. It’s expensive credit (the interest rates usually hover around 23%) and it’s too tempting and too easy to go into debt.

And the worst thing about department store credit is that the negative impact of the inquiries will last 12 months…so any store credit card applications you fill out will haunt you for the next year. It can be a vicious cycle if you don’t break it. You can do it…break the cycle.

There’s very little a retail store credit card can do for you that your normal VISA or MasterCard can’t. I should know…before I filed bankruptcy I was the king of buying on store credit! The more store credit I got, the more successful I felt. I don’t do that anymore. Now I know better. And so should you.

Who you are isn’t determined by how many credit cards you get approved for. Do you even need their credit card? Is saving 20% of $50 really worth the trouble? (Seriously, do the math…10 bucks is all you would save.) Remember, whether you get approved or declined, your credit scores are going to take a hit. And when you’re recovering from bankruptcy with credit scores that are already low, every point counts.

The Best Way to Apply for a Department Store Credit Card

But let’s assume you’re smarter and more responsible than I was when I was younger, and that you’ve never had a problem with spending more than you can afford (after all, we don’t all go bankrupt because of overspending). Here’s how to properly master this process.

1. Find out what their credit guidelines are. Specifically, you want to know what credit reporting agency they use to make a lending decision and what minimum FICO credit score is required to get approved. Don’t bother asking the young people at the checkout register-they won’t have a clue. Your best bet is to call someone in the store’s credit department.

2. Know all three of your FICO credit scores. You can purchase them through www.myfico.com/12. This way, if the credit card issuer tells you their credit guidelines, you’ll know whether you’ll qualify or not.

3. If the credit card issuer cannot give you straight answers to the questions you’re asking, then talk to another person within the department that will. If no one will tell you what you need, you’re either not asking the right people, or you should take it as a sign you shouldn’t be applying for that credit card.

By knowing the retailer’s credit guidelines and your FICO credit scores you can apply for credit with confidence.

Last Words…

Of course, it’s easy to get caught up in the joy of bringing a smile to someone’s face when you think you’re being a good parent or spouse by spending more than you can afford on credit. You must remember, the joy your children will get from a bunch of small gifts now will be multiplied by a hundred when you’re financially stable enough to pay for their college education…or buy them their first car…or help them with a down payment on a new home. Plus, your financial responsibility will set a great example for your children.

The bottom line is: you need to think twice about the negative effect credit inquiries have on your ability to finance more important things such as mortgages, home equity loans, new cars…not to mention your insurance premiums could skyrocket!

Successful UK Visa Appeal For Danny

When a Surrey Nursing Home owner was granted a Work Permit for an in country Senior Care worker in September 2004 little did he know that it would take nearly two years before the Carer could start work.

The Home owner successfully arranged a two year work permit for a male Senior Carer. The candidate, Danny, who was in the UK on a visitors visa at the time, was denied ‘Leave to Remain’ following the tightening of the rules on switching in October 2004.

Bison UK ( www.recruitnurse.com http://www.recruitnurse.com ) took up his case and asked the Home Office to review their decision on two occasions over an eight month period. In both cases the Home Office refused to change their original decision. Danny had no option but to return home to his country in July 2005.

Bison UK were not giving up on Danny’s case. They successfully obtained a new ‘out of Country’ work permit and helped in applying for entry clearance at his local British Consulate.

He was subjected to a gruelling interview by an Entry Clearance Office (ECO) who naturally picked up on the point that he had over-stayed his original visitor’s visa by some months and went on to accuse him of working whilst in the UK. Although he tried to explain that he had only stayed whilst the Home Office were reviewing his case and holding his passport, the ECO refused to listen.

Danny also pointed out that he was supported by several relatives during his time in the UK, but the ECO just fired more questions at Danny until they had him tied up in knots. By the end of the interview Danny felt like he’d been ‘on trial for murder’. The ECO refused to believe any of his story and denied his application for entry clearance (visa).

Danny was devastated by this latest setback and immediately contacted Charles Kelly, Managing Director of Bison UK.

After reviewing the refusal decision Charles felt it was worth referring to an appeal specialist. He contacted a level 3 adviser with years of experience in handling entry clearance appeals, who agreed with Charles that the case was worth fighting.

Bison UK fights on

With the support of his employer and family Danny decided to go ahead with the appeal. Charles put the case together and instructed the appeal specialist to lodge the appeal.

Dealing with an appeal is a long and complicated process and not just a matter of filling in a form attached to the refusal decision.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that all you have to do is ask for an appeal and then sit back and wait for a decision.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Appeals are now heard in the UK, so the whole case gets sent back to the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal (AIT). The AIT will then request the ‘appeal bundle’, which includes skeleton argument, statements and evidence related to the case. All of this can take three or four months and involves a considerable amount of work. Charles and his advisers spent many a late night preparing Danny’s case and going over all the statements and arguments.

After this a hearing is set, which in this instance was at Taylor House in London, for the case to be heard by a judge at the AIT. By the time we got to the AIT, it was now almost eight months after Danny’s visa refusal.

Our day in court

On the day of the hearing, 6th April 2006, Charles and his advisers met Danny’s relatives and employer at Taylor House and searched for Danny’s name among the hundreds of cases being heard that day. The AIT handles thousands of cases each year at ten centres around the UK, including two in London.

The case was set to be heard at 10am, however, the Home Office representative requested more time to prepare her case and we were told to come back around 11.00 and were eventually called at 11.30.

Although not a formal court room setting with wigs and gowns, the experience of walking into a tribunal is still daunting and intimidating. The decisions made within the walls of Taylor House have a lasting effect on the appellant’s lives.

We saw many families turn up on behalf of relatives with no legal representation. As they fumbled around from desk to desk they looked like ‘lambs going to the slaughter’. They were most likely about to be eaten alive in the jungle of laws and legal precedents.

45 Minutes to make or break your life

The judge dealing with Danny’s case seemed businesslike but pleasant and sat behind a large desk with opposing legal representatives sitting on either side. The room was just large enough for the desks and six chairs for witnesses. He interviewed all the witnesses and took notes during the 45 minute hearing. Not a very long time to decide Danny’s fate.

The judge then thanked everybody and said he would inform all parties of his decision within four weeks. The hearing was over but the agonising wait for Danny was just starting.

Good News

A few weeks later, on 26th April, a letter arrived informing us that Danny’s appeal had been successful.

We waited for the five days in which the Home Office could still lodge and appeal, and sent a copy of the decision to the British Consulate asking them to issue Danny’s visa.

If Danny was expecting a call from the Embassy staff to say “congratulations on your appeal Danny, come on down and get your visa”, he was about to be disappointed again.

In fact it took several faxes, emails and phone calls before the Embassy would even acknowledge the appeal decision.

Bison Management UK were still chasing the Embassy on 16th May, as they said they had not received a copy of the AIT’s decision. The Embassy still gave Danny a hard time and only issued the visa after insisting he obtained a new work permit, which caused further delays.

Danny eventually arrived in the UK on 15th June 2006, over six weeks after receiving the AIT’s decision and almost two years after he first got the job. Danny was lucky that he had the support of his employer and that the vacancy still existed. Most employers would have given up on him.

The majority of the hundreds of thousands of people denied visas each year will inevitably give up or lose the job because the employer cannot afford to wait.

The figures show that over 25% of refusals are successfully overturned on appeal, so take advice before throwing in the towel. Professional advice is essential.

My Favorite Books on Book Marketing and Promotion Every Author Must Read

As a book marketing guy and book publicist it’s imperative for me to keep up with all of the great books and magazine articles being published on the topic of book marketing.

I’ve read dozens and dozens of books on book marketing and usually have found a morsel or two of useful information in each one. Here’s a list of my favorites. By the way, I’ve personally met or have spoken to each author and can attest to the veracity of the material they present and their credentials to discuss these topics.

PyroMarketing. Book marketing professionals know the secrets of success that drove the sales of Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life to a chart-busting best-seller and Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” into a huge cinema phenom. Those of us in the business understand that sales of both blockbusters were driven by techniques outlined in a book called PyroMarketing by Greg Stielstra who gained fame in book publishing circles when he served as the marketing director for The Purpose Driven Life, the best-selling hardcover book in history.

PyroMarketing embraces an idea that really has been in use for some time - niche marketing. That tool is well-known and used every day by book promoters but Stielstra lays out the niche marketing principles with a new, crystal clear message that is so compelling that it is a must-read for anyone who wants to promote an idea, service or product. Read my in-depth review and watch a short entertaining video on the concept at: www.westwindcos.com. Buy it at: www.pyromarketing.com.

The Web-Savvy Writer: Book Promotion with a High-Tech Twist

This is an excellent “how to” book on the ins and outs of online book promotion and publicity focusing on the latest technology. Author Patrice-Anne Rutledge is a bestselling author, successful technology journalist, and online book promotion expert who has utilized online marketing techniques extensively to promote her books and writing career. Patricia plows new ground filling the gap in the book promotion marketplace with her highly focused book on bringing technology to the forefront in a book marketing campaign. “Web-Savvy Writer” is a MUST read if you want to utilize the most cost effective and viral methods in promoting your book like blogs, pay per click advertising, online reviews, ezines and more. After reading a few chapters you’ll soon realize what you don’t know about online marketing could fill volumes. She’s truly brilliant. Buy the online version of the book as it has hundreds of clickable links at: www.websavvywriter.com

John Kremer’s “1001 Ways To Market Your Books”

His 6th Edition published in 2006 describes more than 1000 ideas, tips, and suggestions for marketing books - all illustrated with real-life examples showing how other authors and publishers have marketed their books. John, who is a walking encyclopedia about book marketing says, “Eighty percent of all books are sold by word of mouth, but it’s publicity that primes the marketing pump. Remember that you cannot do everything, so hire the right persons to do the things you can’t do. If you’re not comfortable doing your own publicity, then hire someone who does it for a living. I could not have said it better. Be sure to check out his seminars on book marketing held around the U.S. too. Find out about that and his book at: www.bookmarket.com

Author! Screenwriter! How to Succeed as a Writer in New York and Hollywood

I always enjoy talking with Peter Miller, President, PMA Literary Film and Management, Inc. He’s one of the “big” agents in New York City. Known as ‘The Literary Lion,’ he has successfully managed over 1,000 books and dozens of motion picture and television properties. From big names like Vincent Bugliosi to the “next big star” he’s had eleven New York Times bestsellers and eleven produced films that he has managed or executive produced. He likes to do “three book deals” once he gets a writer he likes. In addition, he has a substantial number of film and television projects currently in active development. He divides his time between New York and Los Angeles, and frequently tours the country to speak at writers’ conferences and workshops. His insight into the publishing world and Hollywood is priceless. Buy his book, but if you can see him in person do it and tell him I said hi! www.pmalitfilm.com.

I strongly recommend the purchase of MAXIMUM EXPOSURE Marketing System Book Marketing Training Program for Publishers and Authors by Tami DePalma and Kim Dushinski. This is a very well written resource that teaches authors all about marketing their book. For example they have a complete list of reviewers you can send your book to, sample timelines, lists of distributors and much more. You can stay on top of the changes in the market too as they keep it updated on their web site and blog. Believe me, if it’s not in here it’s not important. Buy it at: www.MX-TheMatrix.com.

Since understanding all of the money making opportunities with your book can be a daunting task, I also recommend that you purchase Jim Donovan’s How to Write, Publish & Sell Your Book and Turn it Into a Never-ending Money Machine. His system will teach you the inner workings of the book business and how to leverage your books so they generate substantial multiple streams of income long after they’ve been published. Jim Donovan’s books have been published in eighteen countries and are being read by hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world so he knows what he’s talking about. www.writepublishsellyourbook.com

Author 101 Bestselling Book Publicity: The Insider’s Guide to Promoting Your Book–and Yourself. One thing about the book marketing and book promotion business is that there are so many nice people in the business. I rank Rick Frishman as one of the top publicists in the U.S. not to mention he’s a nice guy too! His book, co-authored by Robyn Freedman Spizman and Mark Steisel, offers advice and insight about every stage of the publishing world. Using testimonials and commentary, this book lets authors, agents, and publishers alike show you the things you should and shouldn’t do in promoting your book. Buy it at Amazon

Brian Jud’s “Beyond The Bookstore” is a terrific book about selling your book to everyone else other than a bookstore. I met Brian while co-presenting on a panel at a Learning Annex seminar in NYC on the topic of book marketing. I covered the topic of book publicity, he covered selling books. Brian Jud says since more than half of all book sales come from outside bookstores it’s important to target these markets. Mass merchandisers such as Wal-Mart or Costco, gift shops, airport stores, home-shopping networks, book clubs, libraries, network-marketing companies, catalogs, associations, government agencies, corporations, educational markets, retail stores and military branches all buy and sell books.

Brian walks you through creating a special sales plan, where to find the people you need to contact to make your pitch. If you really want to sell books outside the bookstore market then buy Beyond the Bookstore at: www.bookmarketingworks.com

Book Marketing A-Z by Francine Silverman. More than 300 authors, marketers and publicists, including yours-truly tell about their best promotional strategies with regards to book marketing. You’ll undoubtedly find several good ideas to implement. While you’re at it, check out Fran’s Book Promotion Newsletter which for $7.50 a year is the best value in book marketing in the USA. Buy her book here: www.bookpromotionnewsletter.com

There are many books out there on the topic of book marketing, book publishing and just plain everyday business marketing in general. You can read the ones I’ve described above but unless you want to spend days and weeks learning about book marketing, you might find it useful to retain an expert on book marketing or hire an experienced book publicist. I am sure that after you read two or three of these you’ll seriously question the idea of self promotion.

Why? The reason is that today’s book market is extremely competitive. The world is awash in books. Bowker (The keeper of all ISBNs) says that in 2005 more than 172,000 books were published in the United States, plus 206,000 published in the UK. How can Borders, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, your local library or anyone else effectively sell or showcase that number let alone the millions of previously printed titles? The answer: They can’t.

Furthermore, I do not recommend self-promotion, for the same reason you don’t cut your own hair. You can do it, but it’s not going to be that good. Book marketing and book promotion requires special skills and most authors simply do not know how to market a book nor do they have the time or, more importantly, the patience. A publicist develops and nurtures relationships with writers, editors and producers so they trust us when we give them a story idea about a book or author.

The bottom line: While I do recommend these books as a basis for understanding the book marketing and book promotion process a wise author would be even wiser to retain a book publicist to market and promote their book. If you come to the same conclusion please by all means give me a call!

A Delicious Christmas Recipe To Make Your Mouth Water

I don’t know about you but the one thing I especially look forward to at Christmas time is the food. And I mean really look forward to it. Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not saying Christmas is just about food, the festive season is a great time for bringing families together and celebrating, but hey, like I said, I really do like the food.

Traditions Of A Recipe For Christmas

This goes way back and to most families is the main focal point of their Christmas. Waiting to see what that big juicy Turkey will taste like and how it will be presented on the table. Of course there are many other meals for Christmas with a lot of these recipes having been passed through generations of families. It’s kind of eerie when we think of this; I mean just think, our ancestors were tucking into the same mince pie that we are eating now at our Christmas Soir?e. Well, perhaps not the ’same’ mince pie but certainly the same recipe perhaps.

Some Ideas For A Christmas Recipe

I think the fun recipes are desserts as these are a pleasure to create and everybody always loves a lovely Christmas pudding. The Christmas fruitcake is also a great choice and isn’t too difficult to prepare.

A Simple Fruit Cake Recipe

Why not try this very easy fruit cake which doesn’t take a great deal of time to prepare and tastes absolutely mouth watering. This is traditional recipe for Christmas time and will always be well received by your guests. To make this you will need to compile the following ingredients: -

One and a half cups of raisins
Three cups of sifted flour
One and a half cups of shredded dates
One cup of crushed nuts
Two cups of water that has been boiled
5 tablespoons of standard vegetable oil
One teaspoon of baking soda
Two cups of sugar
Two teaspoons each of cloves and cinnamon and add one teaspoon of salt.

Preparation

Now that we have all the ingredients measured as above, simply find a clear and clean surface and then proceed to lay them out. Take the sugar together with the vegetable oil and your raisins and place these in a pot and simmer for approximately twenty minutes or so. Make sure you allow the mix to cool down for approx 5 minutes. During this time the soda, salt and pour cloves can be mixed together in a sifting fashion and then incorporated onto the now cooled down mix. Now get your nuts and start stirring the designated amount into complete mix. An old trick to stop the nuts from sinking is to also add some flour at the same time of adding the nuts. Simply then pour the finished mix into pan which has been pre-greased and bake in your oven at three hundred and twenty degrees for approximately one and a half hours. Set your timer for this and additionally check from time to time.

Making a delicious Fruit cake is just one out of many many mouth watering Christmas recipes that you can make. If you browse the internet you will find all sorts of ideas that you can put to use. Whether you refer to a cookbook or browse the web in general, with a little digging and delving you are bound to find the Christmas recipe that is just right for you and your family.

Book Review: Reading Like a Writer, by Francine Prose

It may seem like ridiculously obvious advice, but it’s one of those bits of ridiculously obvious advice that bears repeating over and over again: In order to be a great, or even good, writer, you have to read. Read a lot. And read good writing. In Francine Prose’s recent bestseller Reading Like a Writer: A Guide for People Who Love Books and for Those Who Want to Write Them, she suggests going a step further and reading in a more careful, thoughtful way. After all, what good is recognizing that Virginia Woolf wrote beautifully complex sentences if you don’t understand how she pulled them off?

Prose takes the reader chapter by chapter through various elements of writing that can be examined upon a close reading of a text. And they’re not all as simple or common as character arc or the use of active verbs. For example, how often have you thought about paragraph breaks? How does a paragraph break affect a reader, and how should you decide when to break them? I get the feeling that most writers, especially new writers, don’t think about this at all. If they did, they might say something like “they just break naturally” or “when a new thought begins.”

But the point of Prose’s observations is that books and stories don’t write themselves. Every letter and comma is the result of a decision by a writer-a decision that could have been made differently and changed the meaning of an entire sentence, passage, or story. Try taking a piece of your own writing and playing with the paragraph breaks. Free yourself from the constraints of your first draft; you can always restore it. See how breaking differently makes the text read differently. As Prose puts it, “merely thinking about ‘the paragraph’ puts us ahead of the game.” She makes the following lovely analogy: “The paragraph could be understood as a sort of literary respiration, with each paragraph as an extended-in some cases, very extended-breath.”

It’s difficult to describe a book such as this by quoting its author, since her entire purpose is to convince you to read other authors. You may not see a paragraph as a breath; you may see it as a story or a question or a piece of information. But in order to discover what role paragraphs play in your own writing, it’s useful to read as many other writers as possible, and stop to see what paragraphs mean to their work.

Prose cites mostly older, classic works (though some are fairly obscure), and some more contemporary examples would have been nice-but they also would have caused a nightmarish situation in her publisher’s permissions department. The classics, of course, have plenty to teach, and studying them is less likely to make you think, “But I don’t want to copy [insert dead white male here].” But in the rather overwhelming “Books To Be Read Immediately” list at the end, you’ll find Denis Johnson’s Jesus’ Son and Alice Munro’s Selected Stories alongside Austin and Hemingway.

Let’s say you’re writing a thriller, and the last thing you want to do is be seen as just another Dan Brown wanna-be, so you’re staying as far away as possible from anything remotely related to The Da Vinci Code. That doesn’t mean you can’t attempt to emulate its page-turning style. Read it closely, and look at the paragraphs. The sentences. The chapter breaks. Read other thrillers you like as well, so you’ll feel less fear of copying one particular author… but if you have your own story to tell, and your own style, that won’t happen anyway. Good writers can learn from one another’s work without committing plagiarism or losing their own voices.

In the opening chapters of Reading Like a Writer, I found myself frustrated that Prose was bombarding me with examples without providing quite enough explanation of why she chose them. But, as she might have predicted, this bothered me less as I continued to read-because I found myself more and more able to follow her advice and read carefully (a nice experience for someone who’s used to rushing to finish a chapter before the next subway stop).

A few final notes:

* Learning to read carefully doesn’t mean you have to do it all the time. You can and should still lose yourself in a good book without stopping to analyze the effectiveness of its use of gesture. But just as architects can both study the construction of great buildings and admire their beauty, writers can study the construction of great works, and apply some of the techniques they see to their own writing, without giving up the joy of reading. If you want only the latter, you’re not willing to work hard enough to be a successful writer.

* As its subtitle suggests, Reading Like a Writer is not only a book for writers. I’ve recommended it to friends who are avid readers, because people who read a lot and like to discuss what they read are also eager to understand why they like what they like. Prose’s writing is accessible and engaging, not pedantic or dry. She’s expressing, more than anything, her love of great literature, and that’s not a feeling exclusive to writers.

* Francine Prose really, really likes Chekhov’s short stories. She devotes an entire chapter to why she likes him so much, one reason being that he was skillful enough to break every “rule” she’s ever heard of in writing, including some she’s mentioned previously in her very own book. I agree that he’s a master of the short story; you should find out for yourself. If you already know you aren’t a Chekhov fan, skip that chapter. But read the rest. And then go read all the books on that “Books To Be Read Immediately” list.

The Andy Griffith Show (Season 6) DVD Review

One of the most beloved shows in television history, The Andy Griffith Show takes its viewers back to a simpler time of small town America, apple pie, and black and white television… The trademark whistling theme song is one of the most recognizable in history, and the duration of the show in syndicated reruns is unrivaled by its peers. The Andy Griffith Show follows the exploits of the small town of Mayberry and its family values, no nonsense sheriff Andy. Widowed, and father to a small boy named Opie (Ron Howard), Andy is joined in Mayberry by his sidekick Deputy Barney Fife, his relative and housekeeper Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), and a host of other eccentric characters.

But the show stealer is Barney Fife (Don Knotts) who plays the role of a sometimes incompetent, kooky deputy always in over his head. The onscreen dynamic between Griffith and Knotts is truly magical. Both men would go on to heralded careers in show business with Knotts starring in numerous roles, such as Mr. Furley on Three’s Company, and Griffith as the title star of Matlock. And Ron Howard (Opie) would go on to establish himself as one of Hollywood’s most well-known directors…

The Andy Griffith Show (Season 6) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “Opie’s Job” in which Opie falls into a heated competition with another boy for a grocery store job, prompting Opie to run all over Mayberry delivering goods in an attempt to please his boss… Other notable episodes include “Off to Hollywood” in which Andy receives a one-thousand dollar royalty check for his idea for a show “Sheriff Without a Gun,” prompting those around him to convince him to take a trip to Hollywood with the money, and “Aunt Bee Learns to Drive” in which Aunt Bee buys a car from Goober so she can learn to drive for herself and not be reliant on others for transportation…
